Thrice have posted a lyric video (?) to another song from their upcoming album, Major/Minor, entitled “Promises”.

Stupid lyric videos aside, “Promises” shows Thrice continuing in the direction they took on Beggars, away from the experimentation and expansiveness that led to Vheissu and The Alchemy Index. It’s another straightforward, four-minute rock song, and while it’s something that Thrice has done better than anyone for years now, it still feels a little underwhelming to hear them play their cards so close to their chest. Major/Minor is shaping up to be exactly what Beggars was, an album of tight songs that hardly expand the band’s sound palette.

Watch the video below.

I prefer this kind of stuff to their AI/Vheissu era so this just gets me more excited for the new album.

I mean, I still enjoy this, and I'll still enjoy the album, but it's just not on the same level.

whoo, digging it

username loyalties aside vheissu is one of my least favorite thrice albums and beggars really really grew on me. i think it's just my longing to listen to a good old fashioned rock album without it having to be some insipid post-grunge drivel that should have died years ago or proggy australian buttrock.

DoubtGin

better than the first song

Yeah I actually like this. Never listened to Beggars because it just bored me halfway through.

see i like Beggars a lot but not enough to hear another album of the same stuff, and that's what this album is shaping up to be. Thrice have always been one of my favourite bands because of how they are always changing and doing new things. This stuff just kind of bores me now. I don't expect to like the new album very much at all, but I'm sure it will be really good. This song is better than the first in my opinion, I just don't like how the lyrics sound like a rip off of the content from "Beggars"

Major/Minor is going to be a lot more aggressive than Beggars, but yeah this is much closer to Beggars 2 than Vheissu 2. They played this as well as 3 other new songs at Yost this past Sunday and they all would have been toward the heavier side if they were on Beggars. "Blur" is the best song of the bunch that I've heard and I'm really pumped to hear the album version.

wow. for a thrice song this is actually, dare i say, ....interesting

this song and every one of the songs they played at yost are fucking amazing and i am so stoked. i agree with the basic rock feel that was mentioned. reminds me alot more of like manchester orchestra sort of, very simple rock but sounds good although i feel dustin has a much much better voice. oh and hey Aids, you got a mention on Trophy Scars facebook from some fan calling you out. they were thankin sputnik for having their album #1 and the fan decided to call you out. thought it was funny, i'd be honored if i was you hahaha

jdennis31
08.17.11
btw, i have no idea what anyone is talking about, none of these songs thus far has sounded like beggars to me other than the fact that it seems to be 2 guitars bass and drums. these songs actually don't sound like any of their other stuff either.

i havent heard beggars but i really enjoyed that

i'm so confused, listened to all the songs again, the only song from any of the 5 new ones they've played that sounds anything like beggars is blur sounding somewhat like at the last on beggars

Though I enjoy the AI/Vheissu era of Thrice, this is shaping up to sound pretty damn good so far. Dustin's vocals really fit this style well, and I feel that there is a good mix of a post-punk abrasion and solid grooves throughout the track. I think this is what they were probably aiming for with Beggars, but weren't quite there yet.

"Dustin's vocals really fit this style well, and I feel that there is a good mix of a post-punk abrasion and solid grooves throughout the track" exactly how i felt but couldn't find the right words

Lol lyric video. Sounds like they've been playing the retirement homes with U2 and Linkin Park. More The Beltsville Crucible please.

renegadestrings
08.17.11
i think its important to remember that this is exactly the kind of sound Kensrue kept saying the album would have, especially in regards to the grunge aspect. that said, i don't know why people keep saying, "hum, why isn't this Vheissu?"
decent song. ending slayed

theacademy
08.17.11
they went back to an outside producer for this, right? like its not teppei again, right?

produced by Dave Schiffman. Schiffman mixed Beggars. Also Gold FUCKING Cobra.

YouthCat
08.17.11
Pretty great song. The only thing that worries me is that every song Ive heard is kind of similar in sound. Im hoping they have the same amount of variety as they have on previous records.

TenSecondsToThink
08.18.11
Listen to the live version of Blur. It made me confident that they'll regain their spark again with this album. Very excited now.

StrizzMatik
08.18.11
Schiffman also had a role with Vheissu if I'm not mistaken.

Song is pretty awesome but Blur blows it away.

There was a guy whose name contains 2 songs from "Vheissu" and really prefers Identity Crisis over Vheissu...
Guess who.

Song is awesome!

Haha, he has an awesome name tho, wish i could have it but i'm thinking major/minor will be > over vheissu so far

Surprised at all of the love for blur. I havent heard it myself but every other place on the interwebs isnt all that into it. Plus, Anthology. Need I say more?

this gets better with more listens. its gunna be good as the 2nd track

paxman
08.18.11
This song is so good. Sure, they're not doing anything progressive or experimental, but come on. This song is fantastic.

YouthCat
08.18.11
Definitely agree with handoman. Yesterday, I thought this was pretty good, but today, its fantastic.

snerefedsav
08.19.11
pretty solid song but i'd like to see them bring back more of the experimental side and/or the heavier aspects of their pre-beggars material. i enjoyed beggars but probably the least out of all their material and the new songs don't sound much different from that sound, ie pretty much what most other people are saying

TooLateToGoBack
08.19.11
Excellent song.

TomArnoldsArmpit
08.19.11
I like this more than anything from Beggars, excluding the title track.

kingjulian
08.19.11
Had this stuck in my head all day. I might like Yellow Belly a little more just because it's more varied but this is really good. I've got this pre-ordered and I'm stooooked.

Apollo
08.19.11
meh its alright, nothing really special

Desolator
08.19.11
Then what is special? It think this is great. Beggars was disappointing for me.

UnnamedOcean
08.19.11
This isn't bad by any means, but I'm not too interested. I'm a fan of Vheissu-era Thrice.

Song is good.

Storm In A Teacup

Killer song.

Any Thrice style is blessed upon these ears.

another rad thrice song. the alchemy indexes will probably remain my favorite thrice albums though

jdennis31
08.24.11
clips of the new songs sound awesome...

kingjulian
08.24.11
Yes they absolutely do. Especially the second half of the album; sounds like what Beggars had the potential to be mixed with Vheissu's variety.
