Its just a different way of vocally expressing emotion. Your voice is an instrument - and you have no problem with instruments not saying any words (if you do please get a CATScan) so why disregard an emotional vocal style because you don't understand it at first? It's not about not understanding it at first, it's about never being able to understand it. And really, if the guy wrote bad lyrics I probably wouldn't mind not being able to understand and would be able to approach them as an instrumental band. However, the fact that the lyrics are brilliant just bugs me no end. I love words and I think its a damn shame when they can't be heard. I mean, really, all that's needed is for the screaming to actually be understandable - that doesn't take away from the emotion.This Message Edited On 05.10.09

It doesn't, but it doesn't add to the emotion either. His poetry must be expressed in that way according to his primary tool of expression. And you can understand it by simply reading the lyrics - even in songs without any screaming at all I've found myself in need of a written accompaniment to tell me exactly whats going on, since thats where the music came from in the first place.

Mmm, I usually do that as well, but with converge, I try to read along and I can't tell what parts he's singing. After a fuckload of effort I managed to decipher how he was screaming (most) of the title track on Jane Doe, but that's it.

If you enjoy the instrumentation of Converge I think you may grow to enjoy the vocal side too, because they are similarly aggressive.

I did get an Envy album for my birthday and I was a little put out by the whole not being able to understand it, but my reasoning for Converge is that I know what the lyrics are and I love them, it just annoys me that I can't hear them in the music. Whereas with Envy, I don't have a clue what the guy is saying anyway - even though its translated in the booklet, it comes out pretty retarded.

But Envy is fairly repetitious and boring anyway.

I have nothing whatsoever against screaming. But in general, purposefully inaudible lyrics does get annoying for me. However, I'm giving Envy another go here, and its not the vocals that bother me. Despite not understanding them I actually don't mind them, it's just the music is boring as all hell.

So yeah, maybe it is just his voice. I'll give it another go soon.

Then everyone on here is telling me to listen to Jane Doe, and when i put the first song on...wow his vocals were even worse! sounds like a 5 year old. Like c'mon how do you get into something like that? I gave up after that song

I hear you Captain North. Even though the instrumentation is excellent, Bannon's vocals have always put me off. With some bands I can zone out the vocals and enjoy the music, but Converge... not so much. Wish I could, cause it'd elevate the band from decent to great, for me.
