John Martyn Dies Aged 60 2009-01-29 by Iai EMERITUS | 16 Comments | John Martyn, a guitarist cited as an influence by acts as diverse as U2, Nick Drake, Portishead, Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones, Faithless, and Eric Clapton, has passed away at the age of 60. His passing, which followed a life-long battle with alcoholism, took place in hospital and is believed to have been peaceful, although no cause of death has yet been announced. His official website currently describes 'an unbearable sense of loss'.
Martyn, who was recently awarded an OBE for services to music and given lifetime achievement awards by the BBC and MOJO, began his career at the same London venue that spawned folk legends Bert Jansch and Ralph McTell, after moving there from his father's home in Glasgow. His 1973 album Solid Air is widely regarded as his finest hour, and one of the best British albums of the decade. He retained a strong connection with Scotland throughout his life, performing there almost exclusively after his right leg was partially amputated in 2003; he was due to headline March's Fifestock festival over three nights.
Martyn leaves behind as varied a body of work as any solo artist, taking in folk, jazz, blues, funk, and even hip-hop and dub influences. His 1977 album One World, which included a collaboration with Lee 'Scratch' Perry, is occasionally referred to as the first trip-hop album.

| | | Hey, it happens to the best of us sooner or later. One, two, or even three celebrity/ musician death's = an untold amount of death's elsewhere. Godspeed....

| | | Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo =(
| | | what the fuck, i posted this.
| | | It's sad, but people keep saying how it's a bad year all the time, but really it's no different than it always has been. There are lots of musicians so that means lots of musician deaths.
| | | I only just started listening to John Martyn. This has made me want to listen more, if only out of respect.
RIP
| | | RIP
| | | Oh god damn it
| | | You're kidding.
| | | RIP
| | | Thats a shame, I still consider Solid Air one of the best albums in my collection, his deep and slurring vocal style is used beautifully in that album.
| | | Damn I just found out about this a little late I guess....... What a shock! I was just looking him up on a youtube video and someone is saying RIP John.... I was like whaaaat John is not dead..... I wasn't ready for this......
It's sad, but you gotta look for the positives. Wow was I ever lucky to have known about him. Thanks for all the music, John!
