Weezer planning next album

2008-09-19 by Alex101 | 26 Comments
Weezer doesn't plan to waste any time in getting to work on its next album. Drummer Pat Wilson tells Billboard.com that the quartet plans to start recording the follow-up to this year's Weezer (aka The Red Album) in early November.

"A week after we get off tour, we're gonna be in the studio with Jacknife (Lee) again," reports Wilson.

Lee, who produced two songs on the latest Weezer album, is coming to California for the sessions, and Wilson says work on the project has already begun. "We send him stuff that we've got, ideas that we have, whether it's a whole song or a killer riff we can build around or something," Wilson explains. "It's all going to him right now."

Wilson says that as on the "Red" album, all four members of Weezer will be writing, singing lead and switching instruments: "It just seemed like that was the healthy way to keep everything feeling fresh. After 15 years of doing it the other way, it just felt like it was time." And Wilson credits the opening up of Weezer's creative process with helping the band become more prolific.

"Now that we've got more writers, we don't have to wait for (frontman) Rivers (Cuomo) to have a bunch of songs he's happy with," he notes. "We used to take forever to make a record, then tour on it forever and be burnt out and not do anything for two years. This is a lot better."

As for the next album's title, Wilson admits, "if I had my way, we would just use colors from now on, then we wouldn't have to think about titles. We must've had a hundred titles for the ('Red') record, and none of them felt right so we just gave up and said, 'OK, let's just make a color.'"

Weezer's next album will also be the last for its current contract with DGC Records, but Wilson says the group has "no idea" what it plans to do in the future. "We're just really focused on trying to make the best record we can," he says. "I'm sure at that point we'll have all kinds of different options and we'll figure out what's the best for us."

When will these guys realise their music is fucking terrible? I can't believe that I let some idiot convince me that "Pinkerton" was worth a listen. The lyrics especially eat at my patience.

Hooray for more horrribly rushed and forced music! Man they must be spending a heck of a lot of money on something...

Rivers needs to stop having sex. Maybe his pent up frustration will help him make good music again.

Yah, and they manage to sound horribly rushed after a period of 4 years between albums  makes no sense to me...

I don't want to hear the other guys sing. I want Rivers, Rivers is Weezer. Use another name if you're gonna do something completely different.

yeah, the others singing really ruined the red album for me. if it was only rivers singing, i might of actually given it more listens. the other guys just sound like proper tools when they sing having said that, blue is classic and i plan on getting pinkerton

But, derekchewie11, they're Weezer not the super-deities, Radiohead. When you release a sucky album it's generally not a good idea to release another sucky album the year after.

I think they should end Weezer, to be honest, the days of the Blue Album is long gone...

Yea, we really do need more original and non-monotonous bands like those don't we?

Foo Fighters are such a joke. There is just nothing particularly special about them yet everyone loves them here in England. Idiots.

Im not sure what to think of this. In my opinion, post-90's Weezer is still great. The Green Album is a fantastic piece of pop music, and Make Believe, while it does have its bad moments (My Best Friend, Freak Me Out), has some awesome songs (Perfect Situation, This is Such a Pity, Hold Me, Peace, The Other Way, The Damage In Your Heart, Haunt You Every Day). Red was a mixed bag in my opinion. It has some great songs, such as The Greatest Man, Pork and Beans, Dreamin'. But it has some crap to, like Heart Songs and Cold Dark World.

In any case, im interested to see what they'll do with this. I think that they could make something of a comeback with this one, we'll have to see.

Oh, and even if you dont like new (as in post pinkerton) Weezer, I think that we should all be excited about the contract being up. Once their contracts up, all of their unreleased demo's can finally be released. And some of the bands best work has been b-sides and such.

Erratic, Burning_October & Eaeon, nice one. I also don't realy care for much post 90s Weezer, but I don't wish them dead - I just simply tune out.

I love the site, but people here on Sputnik really do talk a lot of sh*t.
