R.I.P. Damo Suzuki (1950-2024) 2024-02-12 by Brendan Schroer STAFF | 28 Comments | Japanese krautrock legend Damo Suzuki has passed away at the age of 74, following an extensive battle with colon cancer.
Suzuki was best known for his stint with Can, with whom he recorded three albums: Tago Mago (1971), Ege Bamyasi (1972), and Future Days (1973). These records are widely recognized as pioneering the krautrock genre, as well as being highly influential to future experimental rock acts. As the band’s frontman, Suzuki adopted a loose, often improvisational approach to his vocals and lyrics – fitting nicely with the other band members’ jazz and avant-garde backgrounds. The group’s music was incredibly eclectic, encompassing elements of funk, jazz, psychedelia, space rock, musique concrète, and much more.
Following his departure from Can in 1973, Suzuki became a Jehovah’s Witness and stopped making music altogether. However, he eventually left the denomination and returned to music in 1983 under the name “Damo Suzuki’s Network”. Suzuki would continue putting out albums until his death, with his final release being 2022’s Arkaoda, which he recorded with the Spiritczualic Enhancement Center.
The surviving members of Can posted the following on their official Facebook page:
”It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of our wonderful friend Damo Suzuki, yesterday, Friday 9th February 2024.
His boundless creative energy has touched so many over the whole world, not just with Can, but also with his all continents spanning Network Tour. Damo's kind soul and cheeky smile will be forever missed.
He will be joining Michael, Jaki and Holger for a fantastic jam!
Lots of love to his family and children.
We will post funeral arrangements at a later date.”

Huge fucking RIP
| | | RIP. Halleluwah is one of my all time favorite jams. That live Paperhouse is incredible too. Can were so ahead of their time and Damo was a huge part of that.
| | | Big RIP.
| | | A true pioneer, RIP.
| | | Thank you for the wonderful music dearest Damo. Rest in peace and we're all so green.
| | | Absolute legend. Rest in peace.
| | | The charisma on the man! Like no-one else, even now. RIP
| | | A damn legend
| | | not sure if it's good or bad but I always think of The Fall's immense song named after him first ahead of the music of Can when I read his name
| | | Rest in peace indeed. What an important pioneer in music history.
Has anyone checked his solo stuff, it has barely any ratings even on RYM? Hmm, curious. Would have thought his name alone would be enough to generate intrigue
| | | Yeah same, haven't done so yet either. That will change, in his honour.
| | | Very sad news really. I always loved the music of Can and Suzuki participated on three of the best albums of that band, "Tago Mago", "Ege Bamyasi" and "Future Days", three of the most important works of the German Krautrock. So, Suzuki became a pioneer and a legend in the genre.
So, thanks for all. RIP hard.
| | | Massive loss to music!
Halleluwah is literally my favorite song to break 10-minutes
Turtles Have Short Legs is such a massive bop, as is Moonshake with its weird mechanical instrumental break
God and that wild freak out in Peking O, or just how badass he sounds in I’m So Green
He’s such a fantastic, creative vocalist RIP. Everyone check “Turtles” if you haven’t it was a non-album single not everyone would know about: https://youtu.be/my8T7hB992k?si=wOrSRceuu739BS_-
| | | Didn't know the Turtles tune yet Ars, thanks for sharing. It is lovely indeed, as expected.
| | | Lived to 74 and is partly responsibly for some of the greatest albums of all time.
A bright flame.
RIP
| | | turtles whips yeah, a favorite at our 2022 housewarming
RIP, an inimitable frontperson and indeed one of the best album runs of all time in any genre
| | | Huge RIP to a real one, I think I heard him first on his collab record with Omar Rodriguez Lopez and then worked myself to the classic Can records. Fantastic and creative singer he was.
| | | R.I.P. Legend, gonna spin some Can today
| | | RIP
| | | RIP
