Lars is Lars-ing so fucking hard on these songs, it's actually kind of embarrassing. I'd love to hear someone like Brooks Wackerman on a Metallica album or even retool their catalog, it would totally change the dynamic of the music. Also, bands need to stop releasing so many "singles", totally kills the anticipation for the album release.

but there's some good stuff here. that tom part in the verses is pretty nice (sounds like load but heavy). also love the bridge riff before the solo, and honestly kirk's solo is really good imo (at least for by post-black album kirk standards)

Man these three new songs just aren’t it and I generally like newer Metallica. Death magnetic was pretty consistently good and hardwired had a few terrible songs (here comes revenge the biggest culprit) but some absolute bangers (spit out the bone, moth into flame, atlas rise etc). These new songs are just so bland and uninspired. The chorus of this one is pretty cool but that’s about it. Where are the riffs? And what’s with all their new song starting with snare rolls?

Also, Metallica is iconic regardless of how good or mediocre their current stuff is. As far as 'better'... that's up to individual interpretation, but personally, Metallica live up through the Justice was pretty much untouchable.

There's a few iconic bands that don't get a lot of hate either because they're still going pretty strong (Iron Maiden) or they went out on top (Rush / Slayer).

The idea that it’s ‘trendy’ to hate modern Metallica, when they haven’t released a good album in decades, is just laughable. The mix, master and production on this is just embarrassingly poor. It’s not even remotely heavy, either. Just fails in every department.

The production on death magnetic is terrible and it's really me giving them the benefit of the doubt because some of the riffs are solid. And I think, contrary to what goodolboy is saying, that's usually the case for these legacy acts. More often than not they're overpraised or given the benefit of the doubt because of who they are. If this same song was put out by a local boomer band people would treat it just like that. An average song by some old guys.

Also, it's amazing that a band with the fame and budget that metallica has routinely puts out albums with meme-worthy production quality. I don't understand it frankly

I can agree with all of that. Nostalgia can cover for a lot of shit. It's the difference between how you'd react if a long time friend did something to you that you don't like versus a total stranger... it's just human nature.
