Chris Turner is "TRIGGERED"

2021-04-02 by nash1311 | 44 Comments
Chris Turner, of Oceans Ate Alaska and I Am Abomination fame, has released the second single, "Triggered", from his upcoming solo drum album entitled Steezy.

The track features collaboration from Thomas Lang, a revered Austrian drummer who is a founding member of the band stOrk.

Per Chris:
"The goal here was to compose two unique drum parts that interlock perfectly when played together. With this in mind, it was a real challenge to create a piece that could host this kind of drum part without the song feeling imbalanced or overloaded. A lot of work went into the preparation of this one, but it was so awesome doing something different and working with Thomas - hopefully you guys enjoy it too!"

This guy is a talent and I like watching his vids. Oceans Ate Alaska just doesn't quite work for me though barring the odd track.

Suppose it could've been interesting if you could actually tell there were two drummers, instead of having both sets sound exactly the same.

works as a video, as an album this seems kinda pointless

There’s no point to this music. It’s really not memorable and I just listened lol

double open is sick around 2:08 but altogether it sounds like generative Doom music. But it’s not and it’s called triggered and yeah:

Didn’t like this one nearly as much as the first. As has been stated, as an album track this isn’t anything special. It’s only worthwhile as a video

This reminds me of Zaireeka. An idea that sounds cool on paper but on execution is dumb and doesn't really accomplish anything significant.

agreed @ the pointless part. The better way to utilize 2 drummers is to do albums like Devin Townsend does where there are very different songs on there and you use a different drummer based on the song and that drummer's strengths

^ to be fair, its his solo drum album. So he can't necessarily lend a full track to someone else lol. That said, I think it shouldn't have been so mashed up. Similar to guitar and vocal features, he could have made a long bridge or something and let the dude go HAM for several measures and that would be the feature. Listening to this without the video you don't even know who is doing what

Technically impressive, but musically insignificant.

There's a difference between being able to say lots of complicated words very fast and having something to say.

obviously the dude is really good at DRUMMING. maybe just not songwriting, you know?

"obviously the dude is really good at DRUMMING. maybe just not songwriting, you know?"

This goes for 99% of drummers. And I say this as someone who's played drums for 20 years.

god yeah just tried re listening to this and by 1:45 its just a garbled mess to my ears. i dont think instrumental chugging music has a lot of value.. need some melody in there

Wish it would have gotten much weirder, but cool idea nonetheless. Was hoping for a lot more interplay between the two, something more like this:

i guess im a little confused, how is it a solo album as a 'drummer', if other people are playing guitar for you and bass and there's no vocals?

just strange to think the importance of this album are the drums given theyre not a melodic instrument, yet melodic players are involved and honestly at least give it some feel...
