Chevelle Haven't Made Any Money

2021-03-17 by Fernando Alves STAFF | 72 Comments
Chevelle's singer/guitarist Pete Loeffler told Cincinnati's WEBN radio station that the band hasn't made any money off record sales.

As transcribed by Blabbermouth: "How many bands can say that? We just handed in our last one for Sony/Epic, and we're stitting here wondering what's next. Where do we go now? Do we go back to being an indie band? I mean, that's kind of cool. That sounds exciting. I don't know. I don't know where we're gonna go now. Do we start a label? Do we do it ourselves? We're not a TikTok band necessarily; we don't have that platform."

Loeffler continues: "We're trying to change, but not change too much to lose your core fanbase, and yet you do wanna grow, and yet you don't wanna be stuck in the same archaic music-business model."

On whether the band will re-sign with Epic, Pete said: "Contracts are a bitch, and we've signed some raw ones. And we need to start trying to make some money off of our catalog, which is 10 albums deep, plus all the side stuff. We haven't made any money off of record sales, album sales. It's all gone to the major labels. A lot of people make money off of us; we just don't make money the way the deals are structured. We just aren't excited to get back into any kind of contract. So if we find a new home at a new label, wherever it is, it's gotta be a special deal where you get something for your hard work."

What the actual fuck
I mean, there's the joy of creation and yadda yadda, but why would anyone work like that for free (especially since Chevelle seem to have been working on crazy tight schedules up until this point) without getting any money for it?
The things people do for their passion, I guess. Damn.

Sucks, man. I get why Pete was thinking about putting Chevelle on hiatus, specially when touring is not a thing at this point...they should just go indie.

They make money off of tours and merch sales, like most bands do.

That being said, to not have made money on the album sales at all because of the contracts is bullshit. DEFINITELY go indie next time. The core fan base is there, you have support, you have your name, and even if you don't sell as many record off the major label, you'll still probably make more money off the records you do sell.

most major labels record deals operate on the basis a label gives the artist a lump sum advance to support them and pay for studio time and such.

what then happens is that the label will then take back that amount from the record sales after its released and the artist won't see that money until the advance has been paid off by docking whatever cut they would have gotten (say 20-30%). most artists never make enough for that advance to be paid off and so technically don't have any income from sales at all.

They should either sign to an indie label and negotiate a contract where they are able to make a decent profit or start a Patreon. I’ve seen a lot of bands and artists use that platform to supplement their income.

Hell, I’d probably subscribe to a Patreon if they started one. Circa Survive has one going and I’m thinking of subbing to that too. They’ve been releasing all sorts of cool stuff from the sound of it.

Emery has a subscription method. I directly pay them $3 a month for digital access to their music catalogue and they do 4 eps a year and an lp a year for subscribers

If bands at independent labels need to buy their own records to sell at gigs and online, I can only imagine what shitty deal they have with Warner.

yeah this is why Protest the Hero did that one album via kickstarter, bc they didn't want to have to get a loan from a label in order to rent studio time. If you've got the fanbase you should definitely look into indie funding.

"Emery has a subscription method. I directly pay them $3 a month for digital access to their music catalogue and they do 4 eps a year and an lp a year for subscribers"

wait, was there a subscriber-only LP last year or was White Line Fever their only LP?

I was under the impression that a lot of their fans want them to experiment more anyway and get heavier, even. Maybe being indie would give them more freedom but obviously some people just like radio rock Chevelle. Not me, though. It's fun enough for what it is though but I mean 10 records of that sound would make anybody insane.

Record contracts are a curse. Theres been quite a few bands to go the patreon route and find plenty of success. Chevelle would be another one I'm sure and then some.

Sure chevelle isnt the only band. And yeah touring and merch for income, but how well is that going in the past year for most bands? Don't think this is anything new, sadly you agree to fine print when you sign, but it does suck all the same.

Are people really still surprised by shit like this? Back in the 90s TLC literally went bankrupt because their label fucked them over so bad, and back then the industry was about a thousand times more profitable for artists than it is now

This is something a lot of music fans don't get. Bands make 95% of their money off of touring and merchandise. The albums from a business perspective create the opportunity to tour but don't help the band at all.

This sucks. What about bandcamp? I'm no expert, but I know 2 things. Bandcamp gives more money to their artists than any other like iTunes, Amazon etc.
That's why I always go Bandcamp if possible.
I also know that streaming services like Spotify and alike are the worst, you'd have to listen to an album 1500 times so the band gets their $10. It's ridiculous.

To those saying there’s only so far you can go on passion without money just look at this quote:
‘We just handed in our last one for Sony/Epic’
Sounds like the passion was long gone and this was just an obligation
A lot of us here are musicians and I know personally when I make stuff that I’m proud of it, I’m buzzing, I don’t make a product to hand over to the boss!
