Slayer announce farewell tour

2018-01-22 by Jom STAFF | 57 Comments
Slayer, one of thrash's Big Four, are calling it quits after a 30+ year career.

Although founding guitarist Jeff Hanneman passed away due to complications from liver cirrhosis in 2013 and talks of dissolution initially transpired, the band persevered, releasing one more studio album (Repentless, 2015).

In a :30 clip [1] on Slayer's official Facebook page comprised of archived photographs, press clippings, and iconography taken over the course of their history, the band announce that their final North American dates will be released soon. The video is also captioned with the following: "The End is Near...Slayer to tour the world one more time..."

In recent months, there has been some tension between bassist/vocalist Tom Araya and guitarist Kerry King in regards to the band's future. In a 2016 interview [2], Araya said, "After 35 years, it’s time to like, collect my pension [laughs]. This is a career move. I'm grateful that we've been around for 35 years... it just gets harder and harder to come back out on the road. 35 years is a long time." Meanwhile, King stated that he had hoped to to continue performing in Slayer [3].

The band also released a follow-up poster indicating that Lamb of God, Anthrax, Behemoth, and Testament will join them on the tour.

Slayer announce farewell tour, Tom Angelripper announces a new Sodom lineup and Kreator's Mille Petrozza declares himself a Lana del Rey fan...

2018 is becoming a weird year.

Good to hear. It's about time. They've run their course. [2]

Every band runs their course after a time but with their case Hanemann's death accelerated it even more.

Would've loved to see what they'd come up with if Gary joined in with the songwriting.

Im not a huge Slayer fan and Reign In Blood is the latest Slayer album i ever listen to anymore, but this is still kind of a bummer. Feels like an era is coming to an end.

Oh man, that sucks that they're disbanding. I guess it was inevitable at some point over the last few years though.

But Sodom has always been second rate thrash. Unlike early Slayer.

I feel like Repentless, with hindsight, is just Slayer saying "we're going to do this album because we want to go out on our own terms, rather than be forced into it". But yeah, definitely the right time to call it before they really do descend into self parody.

Never too late rodrigo, never too late man. Everybody discovers different music at different stages.

That said, yeah, probably too late if you had any interest in seein' em live. I was lucky enough to catch 'em at Mayhem Fest five years back while Jeff was still alive. Craziest pit I've ever seen in my life.

dunno bloc. saw an article last year of how much slayer made in tours. it really wasn't all that much considering the cost of touring touring. also the new album didnt sell all that great. I know he will be minted, but that just means he maybe has more expensive things to pay for

Looks like the Big Four North American Tour is a dead dream. Probably for the best. Glad Tom and Kerry aren't gonna ride Slayer to the ground. Thrash saw a revival a few years ago, but that's over so good time to pack up.

Grew up listening to the amazing triplet "Reign in Blood", "South of Heaven" and "Seasons in the Abyss". But honestly, it's time to pack up and leave. And sincerely, in terms of inspiration, they should already have split-up some 10 or 15 years ago...

I'm not sure if it's a good idea to release another album, the reception to repentless was bad, REALLY BAD
