Special New Wu-Tang Album

2014-03-26 by TheGreatQ | 57 Comments
Legendary rap group Wu-Tang Clan have announced that their next release, a double album called The Wu – Once Upon A Time In Shaolin, will be a limited release. But just how limited can any release be in the age of file sharing? Well, the Wu-Tang Clan have come up with an idea that ain't nothing to fuck with: there will only be one copy in existence. In an effort to advance the idea of music as art, the album will be contained in a special silver-and-nickel box designed by Yaha, a man who has designed things for royal families.

This box will go on a "tour" that may include museums, art galleries, and special tents at music festivals. There, interested parties will pay a fee to listen to the 128 minute long album. To prevent leaks, listeners will go through extensive security measures and only be allowed to hear it on headphones. No locations or costs have been finalized, but admission to hear the album is speculated to be around $30 to $50 a person. After the tour is completed, the album and its container will be sold at a currently undetermined price. However,
the group says it will be in the multi-million range. As RZA says, "[t]his is like somebody having the scepter of an Egyptian king.”

i have trouble believing that this has anything to do with art and nothing to do with making as much money as possible. you're really going shaft fans like that? $30 to $50 to listen to an album once?

interesting distribution technique, but $30 to listen to an album ONCE, these guys have got to be kidding. plus no Raewkon and barely and Ghostface will be on this so not worth it

This stunt has nothing to do with music or the release of music because it is simply impossible to really appreciate an album this long after ONE $30-50 listen (and if you pay to hear it more than once, or even the one time, then you're pretty goddamn sad). In the case of it leaking, it instantly becomes just another (probably shitty) 128-minute album.

I mean it's a ridiculous idea but it's clearly genius at the same time because they'll make a shit ton of money out of this even if the album turns out to be pretty bad (And it almost certainly will which makes this all the smarter in an evil genius sort of way like I already mentioned)

thought this was completely ridiculous until I read this is something separate to the album they have coming out to coincide with the 20 year anniversary of 36 Chambers. which i assume will be released normally.

so as a separate project, there are elements of the idea that are pretty cool.

Regardless of the fact that I really do like Wu-Tang, I hope this idea doesn't live up to their expectations. The price of $30-$50 to listen to an album once is just asking too much and is almost a slap in the face to fans, in my opinion.

this is actually an extremely smart thing to do...

anybody who hears the album paid a large sum for it, thus they will force themselves into believing it's great to justify paying for one listen

unless this leaks it will go down as the best album in history

TomAkaVeto

"The price of $30-$50 to listen to an album once is just asking too much and is almost a slap in the face to fans, in my opinion."

When I read the article, it sounded more like they were saying that would be the most likely price the "venues" would charge, I didn't get the impression that the band had much choice in it. Could be wrong though.

plus no Raewkon and barely and Ghostface will be on this so not worth it

there's no Raekwon and barely any Ghostface on their upcoming "A Better Tomorrow" or whatever it's called 20th anniversary album (odd because the 20th anniversary of 36 chambers was last November), but this is an entirely separate project, recorded over like 5 years or something.

but from my understanding RZA didn't even produce it so basically it's just an album featuring Wu-Tang rappers, not an actual Wu-Tang album.
