US industry bible Billboard magazine has crowned Brisbane one of its five international music hot spots spawning exciting new sounds for this year, alongside Beijing, Birmingham, Berlin and Marseille. The magazine - which tracks the most popular songs and albums internationally - insists the city's rich vein of current talent looks set to "threaten Melbourne's traditional role as Australia's main music city".
This assessment is bolstered by Brisbane's long legacy of hugely successful acts.
There's been the singing Gibb brothers the Bee Gees in the 60s and infectious pop duo Savage Garden in the 90s, who have globally sold more than 180 million and 40 million records, respectively. Brisbane's more recent successes have included rockers Powderfinger, solo sensation Pete Murray and pop princesses The Veronicas - who clinched a $2 million record deal with US label Sire Records.
Billboard name drops singer-songwriters Andrew Morris, Kate Miller-Heidke and Kate Bradley as upcoming artists to watch this year, alongside continuing success for Butterfingers and The Butterfly Effect.
"Major label execs are now regulars in town, looking to do battle with local imprints," says Billboard.
The magazine also credits Brisbane's booming live music scene, based around the city's pulsating Fortitude Valley nightclub precinct, as a key factor behind the wave of talent. Dave Leonard, the managing director of Brisbane-based record label Modern Music, which represents hard rockers The Butterfly Effect and newcomers Small Mercies, says Melbourne remains the capital of live music.
"But when you add up the record sales, I think we might be winning - Savage Garden did more than 20 million so that's a great start," Mr Leonard says.
"And obviously with your Powderfingers, Veronicas, Pete Murrays and now your Butterfly Effects, Butterfingers and all those bands that are constantly building, I think there are still very exciting times ahead for Brisbane music."

This is pretty average news tbh. I don't really care for the eastern states. But I do love Butterfingers (and The Veronicas  ). West Australia ftw imo.

As a Brisbane resident, I have been very highly impressed with the local talent that is floating about the place here. The local Metal scene has some world class stuff on offer at the moment, and there's plenty of other local artists in other genres doing well for themselves too.
