its not terrible, but it really is usher trying to do the new r&b style being made famous by the weeknd, recent drake, j cole, etc..

^ J. Cole does R&B? And Drake's always done that R&B So Far Gone-Up. I don't think he's necessarily like, "Oh The Weeknd, someone's style to copy." more like, "Oh super clean synths with R&B sounds neat"

this is the style that's popular now. usher is more or less in the "adapt or die" camp.

Well I mean it's called being a normal artist. There's new technology and production styles since his last release, and obviously he's going to take advantage of that and not try and use the same stuff he's been doing in the early 2000's, that'd be silly.
