Hawkins Quits The Darkness

2006-10-11 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 16 Comments
Singer Justin Hawkins has left The Darkness in order to recover from drug and alcohol addiction.

Hawkins decided his career with the band had come to an end following a stint at London celebrity rehab clinic The Priory.

"I feel bad for the others," he told The Sun newspaper. "It will be an upheaval. But it's time for me to move on. It would be damaging to my recovery to stay on. I'm not blaming the band for my problem - I am an addict. There are people who can be in bands and stay clean, but I'm not one of them."

The singer also revealed that he'd considered quitting last year before the band headed off on a world tour, but decided to carry on after attending rehab. The habit became so serious at one point that the singer was spending over £1,000 ($2,000) a week on cocaine.

"I feel like I've lost three years of my life. I'm only just coming to terms with what has happened because I was always off my face," he explained. "I became secretive, volatile and verbally abusive, a really unpleasant person to be around."

Despite being the face and founder of the band, Hawkins' depature doesn't mean the end of the road for the band. The group continued after the departure of bassist Frankie Poullain last year, and it's his replacement, Richie Edwards, who takes over vocal duties for the band.

The band had previously announced they were recording their third album for release next year, however no news is forthcoming on that project. Hawkins is currently considering the prospects of a solo career.

Damnit. I love this band. My friends and I would butcher Justin's singing while blasting their songs in the high school parking lot. Those were the days...

I'm hardly a fan of the group - in fact they're a little irritating - but that's pretty big news. He was always the face of the band from what I could gather.

£1,000 on coke a week??? I wanna be a rockstar

I hate The Darkness and I think Hawkins is an annoying prick.

Personal feelings aside, I hope he gets clean.

Be interesting to see how this works out. Still, it's a surprisingly responsible decision for a rock star.

They should split without him.

I think he's right to do it, rather than fuck up even more

Goddammit, how I freakin hate this skinny fag.:

1. Their music is beyond badly.
2. His voice is terrible.
3. He's the biggest hypocrite of all time. He critizised Pete Doherty for his drug habbits and how he's a junkie, a loser and shouldn't do that and then Hawkins gets revealed as a freakin drug and alcohol addict?! Son of a bitch.

Normally, I would put you in your place, but the very fact that this is the wittiest thing you could possibly think to say means that you've done the work for me.

Wait, so he admits he can't be in a band and be sober, which he wants to be, so he starts a solo career?

I imagine the solo career won't be anytime soon, considering.

Dammit, I love these guys.
I don't think they could ever replace him, he is the darkness!
I hope he gets clean and starts a new band or goes back to the darkness.
