Soundgarden Reunite

2010-01-01 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 125 Comments
Legendary Seattle rockers Soundgarden have reformed following a 12 year hiatus.

The news was broken via a short message on the group's website that reads: "The 12 year break is over and school is back in session." Readers are invited to sign up to learn more, but no more learning is currently available.

It is not yet known whether drummer Matt Cameron will leave his current position with Pearl Jam to take part, nor is it known whether Timbaland will be unveiled as the unofficial "fifth" member.

still not sure how I feel about this though. They're obviously aged, so grunge is out of the question
hopefully they wont go the path of Pearl Jam's crappy soft-rock approach

I want Chris to look bad-ass again and Kim to riff out some sweet tunes!!

I think Superunknown is one of those cases where the one record that most people heard of a band is actually their best record. Sure, it's not their heaviest, but is that how we measure musical quality? It contains by far their best, most focused songwriting, their most creative guitar riffing, and a hint of psychedelia missing on their previous records. Down on the Upside was not as good, but featured plenty of creative guitar atmospherics (see "Boot Camp"), and the entire thing has almost a twisted Beatles-esque feel to it.

And, guys, it's just a tour. No one said that they're going to make any music. I know that if they're going to play a show near me, I'm definitely going.

Yeah because I totally only like stuff because it's dictated by some panel of hipsters and not due to my own tastes and I definitely care what teh sputnik internetz think

Let's see. Excellent songwriting, superb musicianship, one of the best rock albums of the 90's. Took everything Badmotorfinger did and did it better while being more diverse to boot. Your opinion is the one in the minority so I would assume you're the one who needs to back up your comments with something substantial other than "it sucks"

Wizard

If you read further down, you will see that I do enjoy their back catalogue quite a bit. I apologize for the immature tone/ wording in my above comment but it does get a little tiring sometimes when you post reasoning and the only response you get back is 'faggot' hahahaha. My reasoning for disliking their last two albums are simple; stripped down and way too alternative for my liking. I do like a catchy tune (like I said above, Superunknown contains a few of these catchy tunes), but my biggest problem with their last two efforts is the fact that they display nothing that warrants my attention any further. Not heavy enough, too simplistic in their song structures; it's a number of reasons why I dislike latter Soundgarden.

StrizzMatik
January 4th 2010
4232 Comments

Superunknown has shitloads of heavy grooves all over it. I mean yeah Badmotorfinger was more manic and more metal-ish but I think their sound progressed throughout their careers into more diverse material, and the rhythm section kills it on Superunknown. Just listen to the opening of let "Let Me Drown" with all the heavy funk downbeats. THAT is heavy. Soundgarden was never metal anyways, only partly at most and they were predominantly alternative music. Down On The Upside was definitely their weakest and most mainstream record overall but still had some great songs and experimentation, but I'd put Superunknown and Badmotorfinger on the same level easy. But no disrespect Wiz
