U2 scrap Rick Rubin tracks

2008-12-01 by Iai EMERITUS | 37 Comments
U2 have rejected a number of tracks recorded with Rick Rubin, which were intended for the upcoming No Line on the Horizon, because they 'didn't fit with our style', according to The Edge.

"We actually laid all that stuff to one side. Really out of deference to Rick and that set of songs we just said, 'OK, that’s that,' and we drew a line," he explained. "So none of the Rick material went into this project. Everything has been written subsequently."

In Rubin's place, Brian Eno has once again been brought into the project, as has Daniel Lanois, whose credits include So by Peter Gabriel, Bob Dylan's Time Out Of Mind, and U2's own The Unforgettable Fire. The two producers previously collaborated on The Joshua Tree, an album that remains U2's defining moment for many.

The album is expected to be released in February.

well this doesn't sound very good from a band that used to take musical risks. at least within its own boundaries. unless it was just garbage and the don't want to offend Rick. although its kind of insulting, anyway

back to Eno? just as well, i suppose. but as a fan i would like to hear the rubin tracks nonetheless

Nah, Kurt Cobain...the guy is on like every "Top Guitar Players" list and he's below average.

edge is a very good guitar player. innovative and influential. when you hear him you know its him. when people say "that sounds like U2" they usually are talking about the distinctive guitar sound

good musicianship is a lot more then technical ability. a hell of a lot more. especially in rock n roll music where great technical ability is not necessarily mandatory

The second you say 'doesn't fit our style' you have truly lost the battle known as experimentation and originality.

yeah that was hard to take. especially coming from U2. while not exactly radical they have stretched out musically and taken some risks outside that style over the years. they've been very open to new musical ideas and things of that sort. their "style" would seem to be sort of flexible

and Rubin is known for stripping things down and scaling things back. something U2 has done here and there over the years so just how not their style could it be? this makes me a little weary of the upcoming release

on top of the fact that what Rubin has done for artist i tend to favor somewhatThis Message Edited On 12.01.08

If they're still going for a "metal" sound on this album then it will probably be distinctively different than anything they've done before. I'm not really anticipating much from this though.

good musicianship is a lot more then technical ability. a hell of a lot more.

Heck yes it is.

Haha, what's with this stigma that everyone thought Cobain was some fantastic guitar player? He gets props for having an influential sound for the time, but no one whose heard his music would be retarded enough to call him one of the greats. This Message Edited On 12.01.08

As for U2, this band does little aside from annoy me, and this step, as echoed by others here, seems to push them farther from their trend-setting/boundary pushing ways and find themselves in a nice comfortable niche. This Message Edited On 12.01.08

It prolly has to do with how it was produced. I bet you the tracks with Rubin are clips-galore like Metallica's lol.

Im actually glad. Rubin used to be good (BloodSugarSexMagic remains, in my opinion, one of the best produced records ever), but now he is way to clean. Have you listened to Make Believe by Weezer? Could of been so much more had they just brought on a good producer. Granted the tracks were not GREAT to begin with, but still, they had potential. So yeah, i'm happy with this decision.

Stop insulting guitarists! as a guitarist myself, I firmly believe that no guitarist is 'over rated', it's just that different people prefer different styles. almost as bad as when people say bands 'sell out'.

It's true though. When a band runs out of plastic to make their CD's they've basically sold out! How else can you describe it.

Yeah but from what I've gathered the guy that tracked/mixed Death Magnetic works with Rubin so he'd be on the same project as him. I could be wrong. (Not the final mixing, the in studio mixing)

I'd much rather have Eno than Rubin.

I think U2 were just trying to be nice, rather than say that the Rubin material just wasn't very good.

But Rubin's stuff as of late has been extremely dull. This Message Edited On 12.02.08
