Enjoyable song, I liked it tbh
|
| |
Nice change of style
|
| |
yeah not bad
|
| |
and the 1975 are?
PART OF IT.
|
| |
complete wank
|
| |
i haven't heard anything from then since their debut, but these guys have such an obnoxious vibe to them that i refuse to do so
|
| |
band is so lame
|
| |
i like it
|
| |
I guess they’re gonna make nothing like “People” ever again
|
| |
lol @ that Anton Corbijin-ass music video but the song is fine ig, have never been even a little convinced that these guys have the substance to back up their arty postmodernist posturing but at least they're managing to find new ways to not convince me
|
| |
"The 1975 Are a Band?"
unfortunately
|
| |
Probably one of the best pop/rock acts of the last decande.
|
| |
And by decande, i mean decade.
|
| |
Definitely a strong bon Iver vibe with this one. Not bad at all
|
| |
I like it. Bit of a mix of The Beatles through a Jack Antonoff lens and Bon Iver.
|
| |
I generally like the band, but this just comes across as unoriginal to me and matching on to a style Bon Iver and Radiohead have done better.
|
| |
I like this, but I still think they found their calling on 'People' and they should probably pursue an entire album in that heavier punk-rock vein.
|
| |
the song that dared to ask what if they did Birthday Party again but made it good this time
|
| |
Jack Antonoff is not a subtle co-writer is he?
|
| |
this is like david brent caught wind of bon iver
|
| |
[2]
|
| |
Sounds like they listened to Arthur Russel and tried to emulate him on the verses
|
| |
This is probably one of their better songs and I have no idea how much value that praise carries in post-Borisxit Windmill-era United Kingdom musiccurrency
|
| |
bon iver [4]
|
| |
'This is probably one of their better songs and I have no idea how much value that praise carries in post-Borisxit Windmill-era United Kingdom musiccurrency'
this is worth one priti patel being sick into the queens summer hat collection
|
| |
Really really do not know how I feel about this. It’s a refreshing change of sound but it’s also kind of dogshit?
|
| |
Ah it's good, man. It's a good alt-folk song. I don't think it's breaking new ground in the genre but it's a solid rendition of it, in my book.
|
| |
"It’s a refreshing change of sound but it’s also kind of dogshit?"
band's career in a nutshell
|
| |
idk why every white girl with a slowly developing wine addiction who fetishizes New York and Paris is obsessed with this band and I don't want to find out
|
| |
Haha! I think they're good, anyway. I do love the visceral reactions this group stir up. They're such a perfect target for that kind of response. The frontman seems like the kind of bloke some would love to punch but I'd love to sit and have a few drinks with him. I bet he's a real earnest guy.
|
| |
by earnest do you mean insufferably in love with himself?
|
| |
No because that's not what earnest means. =)
I mean he seems very sincere and something of an open book. Seems like a guy you could have quite personal conversations with and he'd be quite inclined to help rather than judge. He reminds me of a friend of mine, actually.
|
| |
He v much does seem like the kind of guy you could have personal conversations with in the right pub in the right moment, but he also gives serious will invite himself over, cover every room in your apartment with the stink of weed, eat all your cereal without asking, accidentally leave with your spare keys, and then turn up three hours late when you meet to get them back vibes
Lotta earnest bellends out there
|
| |
Hmmm maybe. He seems like the top of guy who's ask first. His lyrics are far too self-aware and confessional. Don't think he'd eat my porridge without asking, anyway. I dunno, maybe I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt but he seems like a lovely guy to me.
|
| |
His lyrics are also largely about how much of an unreliable egocentric prick he is, so imma take that with heavy salt MUCH UNLIKE MY PORRIDGE
|
| |
I know someone who has hung out with him. The band come from Manchester, which is an hour from me. Apparently he’s alright, but not the sort of dude you want to hang out with whilst drinking
|
| |
To be fair, I'd say he'd talk the ear off you on a night out. Haha.
@Johnny: Is your porridge good, yeah?
|
| |
Tbh no, I hardly make porridge bc it's a pain in the arse to wash up :[
"not the sort of dude you want to hang out with whilst drinking"
which genre of this dude?
|
| |
Apparently whilst sober he’s chill, but when drunk he’s either an egotistical arsehole or he wants to shag everything and everyone. He’s not a bad guy by any means, and I don’t think he’s the egotist everyone makes him out to be but I don’t think he’s an intellectual who you’d want to spend hours talking with. He’s an ex heroin addict from Manchester, who managed to strike it big by making some average pop tunes with his high school friends
|
| |
Johnny if you find porridge a pain to wash up have you tried soaking it overnight with hot water and dish soap? Shit comes off super easy if you do that
|
| |
Seems to be pretty chilled out now to me. I mean, surely he's a changed person in that regard. I'd say he'd be alright for a chat about the feels, if you get me.
|
| |
"have you tried soaking it overnight with hot water and dish soap? Shit comes off super easy if you do that"
Word n truth! Unfortunately I vibe it mainly as a breakfast food, and starting the day leaving a pan to soak gets me down because I'm precious and dumb. Maybe it should be an after dinner snack instead hmm
|
| |
Wouldn't mind a bowl of porridge now, actually. Bit of honey and a cup of tea to go with it.
|
| |
I similarly crave porridge right now. If you soak it in the morning for a couple hours it should be ready to clean, I usually eat it then leave the bowl to soak until lunch time
|
| |
'His lyrics are far too self-aware and confessional.'
rofl. sorry but this is ridiculous and naive. lyrics are a presentation, not necessarily an honest expression of someones personality.
plenty of absusive emo scumbags have self aware and confessional lyrics
|
| |
"this is worth one priti patel being sick into the queens summer hat collection"
Underrated comment lmao
|
| |
@ Mort. The context was regarding someone smoking weed in my house and eating cereal. Not abusing people. Calm down, chap.
|
| |
yes im aware of the context, it seemed like an sincere appraisal of his lyrics regardless
|
| |
What's wrong with praising self-aware lyrics? I mean, it's understood that he does react to and at least exhibit some progression insofar as his relationship with drugs can be traced from album to album.
Neither of us know him personally but the lyrics are most certainly self-aware in a way that his humorous and confessional. Whether or not he's just being ironic is besides the fact that the dude can, at the very least, feign an agreeable personality. Enough that I'd say he wouldn't eat my cereal without asking for a bowl first.
|
| |
theres nothing wrong with praising self aware lyrics. my issue is with taking those lyrics to be truly self aware in the first place. like i said, lyrics are a presentation, and not necessarily a true expression of the persons personality. lots of people feign self awareness and introspection.
and basically in my opinion, i dont think he seems like an agreeable personality. he seems like an egocentric leather jacket rockstar, a britschool mannequin. his whole schtick comes off as affected and fake
but like you say, i dont know him so its neither here nor there
|
| |
Pal, he was aware enough to confess himself a drug addict. Fortunately, it was something the chap could pursue help for. There was nothing apparently dishonest about his very real drug addiction.
You're not raising an interesting point by noticing that lyrics, as any other narrated art, is coloured by the subjective and not an entirely objective fabula. Applying cynicism based on anecdotes when I'm having a playful banter about cereal and weed with Johnny isn't some striking bit of criticism. How many other self-aware lyricists are not abusers? Have you tallied it all up before reaching this conclusion that this is decisive evidence of a fraud or are you just having a go at this particular chap because you don't like the look of him?
Besides, you 5'd American Football's debut. Mike Kinsella is also known for self-aware and confessional lyrics. Can we safely assume his lyrics are that of an abuser, too? XD
|
| |
bruh you are the king of misinterpretation. i dont think he is an abuser. what i think is that thinking some guy seems like a nice guy because you think his lyrics are self aware and confessional is moronic and naive. i dont like mike kinsella as a person, nor do i think hed be nice to hang out with because of his lyrics, because im not a moron who does hero worship
im sorry, but youre dumb as shit
|
| |
'Pal, he was aware enough to confess himself a drug addict. Fortunately, it was something the chap could pursue help for. There was nothing apparently dishonest about his very real drug addiction.'
this is not exactly the gold standard of self awareness.
|
| |
literally where did i say he was absusive? how old are you because im baffled someone can have this poor reading comprehension
|
| |
It's really not that complicated. Even people who feign self-awareness can generally appear somewhat agreeable as far as basic manners are concerned (IE not eating cereal in someone else's house, IE the context before your derailed the topic to talk about something else). For you to go on a tirade about how self-awareness can be fraudulent because you noticed some people are abusive is ridiculously offloading. Besides the fact that you're only proving the self-awareness ever more apparent. It's not that complicated: he knows people think he's an egotistical mug and so he makes fun of himself for being the egotistical mug that he knows he is.
You're actually just being cynical and quite judgemental. Also, I don't think you're appearing entirely clever yourself.
|
| |
loool the guy who went through my ratings cos i insinuated he might have too much skin in the game over some guy hes never met thinks i care about appearing clever to him
mate youre genuinely so dense
|
| |
"literally where did i say he was absusive? how old are you because im baffled someone can have this poor reading comprehension"
The pot calls the kettle black. I never said you called him abusive but you inferred it's a possibility because other people are abusive. I called you cynical for making this connection given the wealth of other people who are also confessional in their style but not abusers. It's a pointless parallel. Obviously anyone could be lying about anything in narration. That's the point of the biased perspective. It's not some grand revelation but it doesn't really excuse your cynicism.
"this is not exactly the gold standard of self awareness."
I never said it was. It's just a point of his lyricism that rang true.
"loool the guy who went through my ratings cos i insinuated he might have too much skin in the game over some guy hes never met thinks i care about appearing clever to him"
It's a feature of the website a lot of people use. Calm down.
|
| |
would you like me to chain together the whole chain of events for you? so you can go through step by step like a little child who needs their hand held? lets go!
1. i make a comment about he seems insufferable to which you reply
'
I mean he seems very sincere and something of an open book. Seems like a guy you could have quite personal conversations with and he'd be quite inclined to help rather than judge. He reminds me of a friend of mine, actually.' a comment thats it hard not to take at face value.
2. you and johnny have some back and forth to which you make the cereal joke and say 'His lyrics are far too self-aware and confessional', which given the preceding comment, can also be taken to something you genuinely believe speaks to his personality and character.
3. i take the piss out of you for being so naive to think that someones lyrics are an adequate reflection of their personality, pointing out that many people have self aware and confessional lyrics but suck (which is not the same thing as saying this guy sucks, i know thats hard to understand but youll get there) to the point where you can spout so much guff in a news thread about a 3rd rate indie band
4. you reply with some nonsense about me calling him an abuser and taking things too seriously
|
| |
also, telling people to calm down is ridiculous, you have no idea what mood im in lol
|
| |
Again, I never said you called him an abuser but as far as the one taking things too seriously, Johnny and I were having some playful banter when you randomly slid in with an entirely out of context response and an excuse to insult me so uhhh... piss off?
|
| |
i like how it sounds orchestral
|
| |
bruh dont tell me to piss off pls, thats taking things way too seriously
|
| |
@gryndstone
They've played with orchestration before but the sound here is quite different. More in line with what could be heard on Bleachers' last record. Makes sense given Jack Antonoff worked on this. I also think, by proxy of influence, it sounds like Vampire Weekend's strings.
|
| |
@Mort Alright Mort. Let's stop now. This is getting a bit ridiculous. We're doing "I know you are but what am I" at this point.
|
| |
HelloJoe is the best new Sputnik user and Mort is Mort, I think this case is closed
|
| |
You live in Hamilton, a trash city you will never be able to afford to leave, and I’d say you just graduated from collecting grocery carts to wiping old folks asses but I think we both know you’re not even qualified for that which means you are either a janitor, a prep cook, or a dish bitch at an old folks home so you don’t have a leg to stand on judging anyone
|
| |
And considering you can barely even heat up your own chicken nuggets or clean your grandmas bathroom for her I think it’s safe to eliminate two more of those options
|
| |
there is literally no hair on your head
|
| |
nice doxx attempt btw but you're not even close
|
| |
imagine thinking mort is mort is a diss when youre literally colton
|
| |
I'll make you chicken nuggets, Colton.
|
| |
hellojoe is goated ngl
|
| |
Thanks man. Love for my pal. < 3
|
| |
thank you joe. I like them with caesar dressing and a few slices of parmiggiano reggiano
|
| |
We'll all have dinner together. =)
|
| |
hellojoe is qt mort is my god not a fan of this rivalry someone make a sacrifice
|
| |
RiP Cotlon's chicken nuggets. Had to go in the bin for the greater good.
|
| |
sounds like you've had one too many there gramps
|
| |
i have nothing against the guy i was just in a particularly bad mood because of personal problems and also have a raging hatred for this band and also the general british public attitude of 'they seem like a nice guy i want to have a pint with them', a sentiment that usually gets wheeled out whenever some despicable cretin puts on an air of cheeky chappery to placate the masses so that whenever i hear it i kneejerk myself into a hatelust
basically im sure hellojoe is a perfectly nice human being and i apologise
|
| |
"you are either a janitor, a prep cook, or a dish bitch at an old folks home so you don’t have a leg to stand on judging anyone'
Woah woah WOAH on this website we respect and appreciate those who keep our kitchens running and public spaces tidy
|
| |
It's fine, don't worry about it. I hope all is good with you. If you ever need to get some things out, don't suffer in silence. It's always good to share if you're willing.
|
| |
Thank god you realized your mistake. Pots however implying that janitor work is unskilled is plain wrong.
|
| |
he's pretty far off the mark but yeah gross to look down on jobs like that, I've also seen him in various threads saying he's unemployed so...
|
| |
I watch cleaning ASMR but don't like cleaning so as far as I'm concerned, janitors are a God send. Really though, they are underpaid when we consider just how valuable the work is. Cleaning up after someone else's mess is really good work.
|
| |
People would be swimming in shit and cigs without janitors
|
| |
Mad respect to them. Mad, mad respect.
|
| |
Song is great yeah
|
| |
Tune! Has that Burn the Witch/Johnny Greenwood staccato string arrangement kind of vibe. And I really might be in the minority here but Brief Inquiry is such a brilliant album. Dismissed it initially now I can’t stop playing it.
|
| |
A Brief Inquiry is my favourite album of theirs. I think their first two fall off a bit in parts or maybe don't sustain my attention the same way their third album does.
|
| |
once again: can we stop pretending this band is good
|
| |
"once again: can we stop pretending this band is good"
They are good, but they are also terrible at the same time. Hope that helps.
|
| |
They are good, but they are also terrible at the same time. Hope that helps (2)
I like most of their stuff honestly but i get why people can get turned off by some of the lyrics. Even tho i like them i cant defend their last album that was all over the place lol
|
| |
I liked quite a lot of the songs on the last album but there were definitely a few like 'Bagsy Not in Net' that really could have been cut, in my opinion. I just don't know what it accomplishes at that stage in the album that wasn't already achieved earlier on.
Their new album being 11 songs and the promise of "cohesion" sounds very much like a response to the excess of Notes...
|
| |
Yeah dont get me wrong, there are many songs on the last album i really liked and some might even be among their best, but as a whole that album really didnt work although i respect that they tried it.
Yes the 11 songs and their lengths feel much more safer. Must also be good for them to do something more traditional again and not get in over their heads again
|
| |
I totally agree. I mean even the opening of Notes is like... it starts with a great juxtaposition of two different exprrssions on climate change. The same opinion told in different ways. But then 'The End (Music for Cars)' and 'Frail State of Mind' comes along. I love those songs but it sounds like the album itself is starting again. It doesn't really follow along from 'People' in any sense.
|
| |
Couldnt have said it any better myself, HelloJoe!
|
| |
In an interview, Matt Healy alluded to an apparent cohesion or 'flow' when pressed about the matter but I honestly don't hear it myself.
There are certainly times when I reach that state of flow with the sequence here but I also admire how fans have restructured the album for themselves or perceived it has a 'playlist' rather than a formalised and necessary order. It's the most positive way of looking at an album that is quite sporadic. XD
|
| |
Yes the playlsit explanation seemed kind of random but it kind of made sense? didnt make it any better because there are many things i would skip!
|
| |
The songs I tend to skip come toward the end of the album. 'What Should I Say and 'Bagsy Not in Net' don't do much for me. =(
|
| |
Band is great, song is great.
|
| |
