2011-07-19 by DaveyBoy EMERITUS | 25 Comments
The shortlist for the 2011 Mercury Prize - insert "Barclaycard" before that if you must - has been announced, with Adele, PJ Harvey and Elbow favored to win top honors. The latter two have the chance to become two-time winners of the prize.

The award - presented to the best album from the United Kingdom or Ireland - was last year won by The xx. Previous to that, Speech Debelle upset all kinds of favored acts.

The nominated albums for this year are:

Adele - 21
Anna Calvi - Anna Calvi
Elbow - Build a Rocket Boys!
Everything Everything - Man Alive
Ghostpoet - Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam
Gwilym Simcock - Good Days at Schloss Elmau
James Blake - James Blake
Katy B - On a Mission
King Creosote & Jon Hopkins - Diamond Mine
Metronomy - The English Riviera
PJ Harvey - Let England Shake
Tinie Tempah - Disc-Overy

King Creosote/Jon Hopkins should be winning this.

Surprised that Radiohead weren't included tbh.

I haven't listened to any of these albums in their entirety except PJ Harvey's, which I've played into the ground.

So it'll seem ridiculous when I say I hope she wins, because that's a great album.

Ghostpoet could be awesome, I don't know. I was just picking up on them being very unknown compared to Katy B, Adele, Tinie Tempah, etc..

They always throw in some obscure curveballs, and they occasionally win, eg, Speech Debelle.

List's pretty poor to be honest. Wild Beasts is a glaring omission and I'm surprised that Arctic Monkeys, The Horrors and WU LYF aren't there either.

From those that have been nominated, PJ Harvey's album is easily my favourite, though James Blake and Adele would be worthy winners too.

Anna Calvi's album is good, but not so good as to be named album of the year by any stretch of the imagination. The same goes for Elbow, Everything Everything and Metronomy.

Serious lack of Wild Beasts here.

hughes, while I wasn't really a fan of the Anna Calvi album, I actually think she is a huge shot to win this.

Having said that, she is way under the odds.

I quite rate that Metronomy disc too. Big step up from their fairly average first cd.
