Nergal Facing Prison Time

2010-03-16 by demon of surveillance | 163 Comments
Behemoth frontman Nergal (Adam Darski) is facing a possible two year prison sentence for a 2007 concert in which he tore up a bible and denounced the Christian church as a murderous cult. Nergal claims it was merely part of his artistic work and that he did not mean to offend religious groups.

lol, im glad he's getting called out for all those gimmicky anti-Christian images this band tries so fucking hard to portray. calling one of the largest religions in the world a "murderous cult" is not only a false stereotype to be sending to young, moronic/impressionable 15 year olds, it's also every bit as indoctrinating as the very religion he seeks to condemn. and it's hardly artistic expression when you're blatantly attacking an entire religion. if someone burned a hebrew bible on stage, waved a swastika flag and tried to justify it as artistic expression, they would get laughed out of court. but it's just so much easier to pick on Christianity so this will probably end up being a nice publicity move for the band

Except that they haven't been black metal for many years now. But I wouldn't expect some hipster indie dumbass to know his ass from an ipod touch anyhow.

Not that I like the band. As a matter of fact, I think they're bland and the whole Bible-tearing thing was done by Marilyn Manson years ago which really means it just isn't that shocking anymore. Except in Poland that is.

The Catholic Pedo-Priests are the ones who should be raped in prison, not Nergal. I don't there will be much raping going on, Poland is a pretty tame country if this story doesn't prove that.

When I lived in Krakow, it was one of the first things you noticed. Well the city in particular is more art oriented, but there was a ton of religious art. My grandmother and mother are from there too (raised there, then moved to U.S) and there are a lot of...touchy people. Can get in trouble for a lot of religious related offenses; especially if you're relatively well known in a particular region..

To some extent the Christian Church is a murderous cult, or at least promotes hate and violence. Obviously, in the case of most first-world countries the power of the Christian Church is repressed; this situation, however, does not imply they are unable to advertise their most severe doctrines in third-world countries. For example, last year in Uganda an anti-homosexuality bill was presented to the parliament. According to the bill, "aggravated homosexuality" should be punished with death sentence, and life imprisonment is the minimum penalty for anyone convicted of having gay sex.

"[W]ithin Uganda deeply-rooted homophobia, aided by a US-linked evangelical campaign alleging that gay men are trying to "recruit" schoolchildren, and that homosexuality is a habit that can be "cured", has ensured widespread public support for the bill." http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/nov/29/uganda-death-sentence-gay-sex

Hahaha, "did not mean to offend religious groups." That's funny.

I understand what he means. He meant the performance and the act of ripping the bible to be seen by fans attending the concert. It was for their entertainment only and not meant to be said directly to the church. Although I'm sure he wouldn't have a problem doing that either.

There's no reason to get offended over what happens at a concert that doesn't hurt you.

calling one of the largest religions in the world a "murderous cult" is not only a false stereotype to be sending to young, moronic/impressionable 15 year olds, it's also every bit as indoctrinating as the very religion he seeks to condemn.

Well you sure don't know a lot about the bloody history surrounding the Catholic church and christian faith.

Atheism is a lot more illogical then religion at this point dude unless science can start explaining a
lot more stuff.

I can't believe that you made such a moronic statement. Atheism is based on logic and reasoning. Something religions tend to throw right out the window. Science is a dynamic field which builds upon knowledge slowly and surely. There's no need to begin invoking the supernatural just because you can't wait for a logical answer. And religion causes more questions then it can explain,by using the supernatural as an explanation really has no explanatory value at all.

What you seem to be missing is that in a country where one specific religion has THIS MUCH FUCKING POWER, everyone is in deep shit.

Fucking pussy. If you're going to do something, do it right. Dont' half-ass it. Of course he meant to offend religious groups - until they decided to have bigger balls than him. Frankly, I would've sided with him until that sheep-eyed apology. Hopefully he'll get shanked in prison. Although, the way these things seem to go, it's more likely he'll just release a (more) shitty comeback album once he's released.

"^I didn't know illiterate people could write books, i learn something new here every day"

oh LOL

"I understand what he means. He meant the performance and the act of ripping the bible to be seen by fans attending the concert. It was for their entertainment only and not meant to be said directly to the church. Although I'm sure he wouldn't have a problem doing that either.

There's no reason to get offended over what happens at a concert that doesn't hurt you."

O RLY? So even though you believe in something, you shouldn't take it seriously? You should allow other people to trample over what you love?

As for the "not wanting to say it directly to the church" - give me a fucking break. There's no point in theatrics if all you're going to do with them is preach to the goddamn choir. He wanted to be a bad boy but he got caught and now he can't handle the heat, or even stick up for himself, or stay true to his own motivations. He's a child. Fuck him.

Nergal won that case and sued the guy who started it for calling him (Nergal) a criminal. The justification was if you don't like to see the Bible being torn, you don't buy a ticket and go to Behemoth gig. Kinda logical, huh? BTW that guy who sued Nergal for offending his and other Catholics' religious feelings seems to be a total nut. He said that no one joined his claim (like nobody felt offended except him) because other Catholics are too afraid of Nergal's satanic powers to go to court.

And insulting the Roman Catholic Church isn't a crime in Poland. Crime is purposedly offending citizens' religious feelings and someone have to sue for it personally.

Which would be?

And that isn't what I said. Give me a fucking break.

Oh yeah I completely get what you're saying. There's no point in theatrics such as when Gwar disembowels a George Bush doll, or whatever the fuck they did to it, unless they really intend to disembowel the real Bush.

And what apology are you talking about? It doesn't sound at all like an apology to me. He can't handle the heat, or stick up for himself? Are you pulling that out of your ass?

"Atheism is a lot more illogical then religion at this point dude unless science can start explaining a
lot more stuff."

I think science tries to explain that carbon-based organic matter can't go for 3 days decaying in a damp cave and then regenerate...

In other news, Nergal should share a prison cell with Varg Vikernes, am I right?

GWAR? They're a joke band, and putatively at that. The fact you're trying to use them to illustrate how doing something without a point behind it isn't pointless(lol) goes to show you're a simpleton. In addition to the fact you claim to not have said something you very clearly did. Theatrics without a point = entertainment, enterainment = pointless.

Apology: "I didn't mean to offend anyone!" If you're going to tear a sacred text in two, it's pretty clear you have no interest in the respect and admiration of people who hold that text to be sacred. Doing that and then turning around and pretending all you want to do is get along with everyone is either disingenuous or (worse) spineless. Nergal is obviously an enormous faggot. In fact, he probably did this just so he WOULD get sent to jail, thus getting all the free buttsex he could ever want.

If you can't see the difference, then I don't know what else to say to you, its possible that you're the simpleton here.

Apology: "I didn't mean to offend anyone!"
------
Nergal has stated that tearing apart the Bible was part of his artistic work and was not meant to offend religious sensibilities.

I would consider something that shows regret for his actions to be an apology. Which isn't found in his response. All he said was it wasn't his intention to directly offend them. Not that he regrets it and is actually sorry and takes it back. Sounds more like an explanation of why he did it.

Doing that and then turning around and pretending all you want to do is get along with everyone is either disingenuous or (worse) spineless.

That's quite a leap to assert that.

I didn't mean to do that = I didn't want to do that. You're becoming very tiring - I shouldn't have to explain basic English to someone with internet access. There is no difference, and the reason you "don't know what else to say to me" is because you HAVE nothing else to say. Such is the curse of idiocy.

I didn't mean for my actions to be offensive = I wish I hadn't offended = I AM SORRYZ. Also, like I already pointed out to you, but you may have been too thick to notice(or understand) - you don't tear a Bible apart without meaning to be offensive. Fuck your "directly". Blasphemy is intentionally offensive, ALWAYS. That's why it's blasphemous. He just cried like a bitch because someone decided to stand up for themselves, and as a result he should look into the Final Solution post-haste.

"That's quite a leap to assert that."

Do you have a learning disability? There's no leap in asserting there is cowardice in performing an intentionally offensive act, then following it by saying that you weren't trying to be offensive. You can't have your cake and eat it too - but something tells me you're one of those folks who doesn't understand that saying anyway.

Just because something wasn't the original intention doesn't mean it's regretted.

Blasphemy also isn't intentionally offensive. If I decide to smoke a joint rolled out of biblical paper with a friend, who the fuck am I offending? There is no one to offend. What makes it blasphemous is that I deprived the page/book of being sacred. If people find that offensive, that's a by product of blasphemy, not the intention.

So if I perform at my local venue, tear up a bible only for the intentional purpose of pleasing the crowd and putting on a good show, and some christian hears what happened a few days later, somehow it was my intention to offend that christian?

Same goes for me smoking a joint rolled out of blank biblical paper.

Would I have been trying to be offensive? Fuck no. I didn't mean to, it wasn't my intention. Would I regret doing either of the above? No. Would I mind doing it right in front of a christian? Not at all.
My hypothetical situation parallels Darski's situation an I'm sure he would agree.

He just cried like a bitch because someone decided to stand up for themselves

That's where you made the leap. Nothing in his statement shows regret. If you can't see that then you're the one with the disability.

What a childish response.
And of course not. Blasphemy doesn't always have to be intentionally offensive. You'd have to be deliberately ignoring other definitions of blasphemy to think so.

blasphemy - blasphemous behavior; the act of depriving something of its sacred character; "desecration of the Holy Sabbath"

How else would you explain the blasphemous nature of things done in private with no one around to be offended?

The poster above me is correct, neither of us are going to bend to the others side. So no one wins.

Well for arguments sake you have to have consistency when assigning definitions to words and even if they are intangible.
As for math "2+2=5" I realize you used words, but math is a form of logic and can't mean whatever the hell we want it to mean.
As for your reply as a whole, it completely conflicts with all of your previous posts where you insisted that blasphemy was always intentional.
So if words can mean what ever we want them to mean then, you enjoy performing fellatio with your band mates in front of hundreds of people.

By fellatio I mean an arrangement of sounds in time.
