07.01.21 | As always, try to give a little blurb if possible so I can add it to your entry. Also, someone else is gonna have to help with the Google Docs spreadsheet, because I suck at formatting that stuff. As I said in my entry, the goal here is to shine a light on a format that's not quite as popular on Sput. Let's be real here: the soundtrack section could be a lot more extensive than it is
Finally, if we have an overflow of entries, I'll go beyond the original 31 with a "bonus" section
Here's the Google Docs spreadsheet for this month https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yo9Aj7t1IZwG41xFgX9kzIugIsVckENq5RnQace1WDw/edit#gid=509626326 |

07.01.21 | divergent, would you prefer we go with stuff that's more original composition and score-y, or is it ok to say include a song that's been totally rearranged by a composer to fit in a film's score? This more just goes to what I'll pick from a particular soundtrack, I already know which soundtrack it is |

07.01.21 | Courage (Sam Dent Band Version) from the Sweet Hereafter (rearranged by Mychael Danna, vocals by Sarah Polley). @Divergent, I added the soundtrack under Mychael Danna's entry as the bulk of the music was written by him.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bf_ZCYDpsYM
Atom Egoyan's 'the Sweet Hereafter' is a bleak study on the transformative effect of grief. Set in a small, remote town in Canada, the music captures how ice and snow are such dominant features in the lives of the residents. The use of archaic instruments heightens the perception of the location being mountainous, timeless, and unchanged; the recurring theme of the Pied Piper and the death of the town's future is also ably captured. Danna and actor Sarah Polley worked on rearrangements and original songs for her character (an aspiring singer). These provide brief moments of warmth, but still with a sense that comfort is transitory. This reworking of the Tragically Hip song 'Courage' cleverly foreshadows the film's climax. |

07.01.21 | Tangerine Dream - Charly The Kid (from the soundtrack of the film Firestarter)
Tangerine Dream is famous for their film soundtracks, and this is from one of my favorites. The piece represents the main character of the film, young Charlene McGee, who discovers a fearsome power inside of her as she grows closer to adolescence. The government wants to weaponize her power and turn her into a monster, but this song represents Charly's essential goodness.

07.01.21 | 1. Mega Man Battle Network 3: Tree of Life - this doesn't really sound reminiscent of a robot man shooting reprogrammed robots with a cannon for an arm. It maybe sounds like two old, sexually compatible friends catching up over the holiday season and discovering that each other are a bit of alright. 3.3 |

07.01.21 | Wasn't gonna do this month, but that theme, oh my:
My pick is for Chrono Trigger - Frog's Theme, but in particular this absolute beast of a cover:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UA13icbjAvw
Chrono Trigger's soundtrack holds a very special place in my heart. It was the first time I was ever moved by a video game soundtrack when I first experienced it as a kid. It still remains one of the absolute best video game soundtracks of all time, and the numerous iterations of covers makes it near impossible to choose what to share from it. Frog's Theme was always my favorite. |

07.01.21 | The Neverending Story theme
The theme song of the English version of the film was composed by Giorgio Moroder with lyrics by Keith Forsey, and performed by Christopher "Limahl" Hamill, once the lead singer of Kajagoogoo, and Beth Anderson.

Such a hauntingly beautiful track for a underground city in the rain (yeah its raining underground, for reasons I won't spoil). It was the center of civilization but has since turned to ruins, with it's inhabitants going mad and not remembering their past lives. Instead of it being angry or vicious, it is just sad and melancholic and full of atmosphere. Goosebumps every time I hear it. |

07.03.21 | The PS1 definitely had some of the most underrated RPGs ever. Dragoon, Legend of Legaia, Jade Cocoon, Breath of Fire III, Chrono Cross... so much good stuff |
Storm In A Teacup
07.03.21 | yes both Legend games are 10/5 for me, legaia and dragoon soundtracks are just bonkers, have never heard of those other two (oh 3 lol) tho |
Koris
07.03.21 | Definitely check out Jade Cocoon. That one's my favorite out of all those games, and still one of my favorites of all time. Gameplay-wise, it's a cross between Pokemon's monster-breeding and Final Fantasy's combat system. I was also super tempted to use a song from its soundtrack for my entry, because it's still my favorite soundtrack of all time. A beautiful combination of bombastic orchestral work and reflective new age sections with a folk influence. I have a review of the soundtrack on here if you ever wanna check it out :] |

3. Tristram - 4.0 - I love me some Diablo. It's been a good long while since I heard this one though. Remains a very good atmosphere piece for the game.

07.06.21 | 1.) Tree of Life - As someone who as played pretty much every single iteration of anything Mega Man, this might be the least representative example of Mega Man's various soundtracks. It's a pretty good song though, definitely picks up nicely in the 2nd half. I like it enough. 3.5
2.) Supporting Me - Certainly an interesting song, surprised to hear the lyrics come in, kinda reminded me of what Pendulum would sound like if they made a video game OST. Doesn't really come to any climax in a memorable way, but a solid track. 3
3.) Tristram - Well yeah, it's one of the most iconic video game songs ever written. Even when you're back in the town buying potions and scrolls, you feel unease, gotta love that. 4.5
4.) Untitled - Sounds like Dungeon Synth, sounds like a garas rec. I love this because this could have been released on a new Fief record and I wouldn't bat an eye. Cool song, nice melodies, and instrumentation. 4
5.) Nascence - Beautifully crafted and atmospheric. Still need to play Journey, but sounds like it might be worth it for the soundtrack alone. A bit short as a standalone piece but still effective - 4
6.) Leaving Home - welp, congrats, you broke the video game OST theme. Sounds like a Baroness interlude. Pleasant song, but pretty unmemorable. 3 |

Oh god, is this mostly going to be video game music month? Pretty piano piece so far, simple, emotional, and uh pianoey. Not too into this, but it's not bad.
3/5
"Supporting Me"
Oh, this was the first video game I ever owned. Not the first I ever played, but owned. This was when Shadow fights the Biolizard right? Hardest boss in the game, even harder than the Final Hazard. This is kinda like poppy industrial rock and I never noticed the strings until now, weird. It's no Security Hall though. Cool enough.
3.4/5
"Tristram"
Medieval nerd folk so far. Now it's even nerdier oh my god. Dungeons and Dragons/Renaissance Fair cosplay ambient. Flutes, guitar, no vocals, I'm bored. When is this going to end?
2.4/5
"Untitled"
More nerdy renaissance music, what the fuck guys? This is soundtrack month! Do you know how many cool soundtrack songs there are? I'll give a higher score for this because it's not nearly as long.

Solo cello so far, okay. Wait, there's some harp. I can't imagine a bard playing this, so it's already better than the last two. Kind of sophisticated and classical. Short and sweet, but not too interesting.

Intense beginning. I know it's not Tangerine Dream's style to include vocals, but a floaty emotional male lead would work so well with this soundscape they created here. Like Peter Gabriel or something. I don't like how it just abruptly ends, but it's was cool while it was happening.

Damn good soundtrack for a game this old. I might actually see if they have this on the switch and get it now. |
Divaman
07.09.21 | 9. Chrono Trigger Original Sound Version - Gentle guitar. Cartoon frog. Music takes off about 45 secs in. I've never heard this before, but I can see where it could get to be kind of iconic. 3.7 |

07.10.21 | "Frog's Theme"
Grandiose cinematic orchestral music that morphs into symphonic metal. Not my thing at all, but that bass is VERY audible, so +.1 for that. A bit lame honestly, but it could be worse. Maybe I don't like this entire theme?
2.6/5
"The Neverending Story Theme"
Synthpop with strong melodic leads and a little bit of funk bass, what a change! Damn this is corny, but it's also kinda cute. Might as well be the best song so far enough though it's not blowing my mind or anything.

9.) I stand by this cover being incredible, y'all crazy. That being said, the original SNES OST is perfect. Easily my favorite of all time, but I thought the 16 bit version out of context wouldn't be as interesting. Best RPG ever, best soundtrack ever.
10.) Neverending Story Theme - Classic, makes me want to ride Falkor off into the sunset. 07.16.21 | "Alone"
Slow piano. Ambient atmosphere. Boring out of context.
2.5/5
"No Escape"
folk but rocky at the same time out of the gate. Some theremin sounds? Is it possible something can sound crowded and boring? At least it's more than just background music.
2.8/5
"City of Tears"
I actually have played this game. It's fun. Sure the strings, harps, and vocals are pretty, but it's just more ATMOSPHERIC background music. The best songs this month are the ones that choose to actively engage instead of just setting the mood and trying not to get in the way otherwise. If you're trying not to get in the way, you're also going to miss getting into my heart y'know? So as much as this fits the game, it's really boring on its own.
2.5/5
"Put Your Love in Me"
Oh my god it's a full song! It's creepy, the percussion is pretty cool in a scattered kind of way and those echoey vocals make me feel like in an intense scene in some movie. It's kinda plodding though if I'm being honest. I'm 4 minutes in and I'm wondering where this can go since it's 7. Not the best thing ever, but decent enough.

This is cutesy and pretty engaging. Makes me think of Zelda. I like the drums. It's still totally background music, but at least I could see this one getting caught in my head.
3.5/5
"You're Not Alone"
More ATMOSPHERIC background music, this time with panflutes, oh fricking joy. This one's at least trying to grab the ear though, so I give it that. Sure it sounds like it belongs in some 1980s adventure film, but that's okay. A for effort, but I guess C for results.

07.16.21 | 13.) No Escape - Sounds like the intro to a modern Amorphis song. Eastern vibe, good use of instruments and build up, a very solid modern OST sound. 3.7
14.) City of Tears - oh boy, what a soundtrack. The entire soundtrack is close to a 5, almost up there with something like Chrono Trigger. This isn't even a standout track for me and it's still pretty fantastic 4.0
15.) Put your love in me - Painfully boring, awful vocals/melodies, nothing interesting happens till like 3:35 and it's not even interesting enough to save this. Got to like 5:30 then turned it off. 2.5
16.) Welcome to the Forest - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIiIUdaXEyU here's the actual link to the song (I think). Sounds like something out of Zelda. Pretty good, enjoyable bouncy melody, a soothing adventure tune. Reminds me of Moonlighter OST. 3.8
17.) You're Not Alone! - Hot take, this game is incredible but the soundtrack is just fine. Not even close to the best FF soundtrack IMO. does bring back some memories though, except for that final battle, wtf even was that. This is a good song though. 3.5 |

07.21.21 | 18.) If You Still Believe ā I never played Legend of Dragoon, but itās still on my list of psx RPGs, I think I have an iso for it somewhere. Pleasant track, a bit long, like how it builds though, kinda has an epic build into a pop chorus with that sexy sax layin it down. Kinda easterny vibes, but also kinda pop. Catchy chorus though. 4
19.) Wretched Weaponry ā okay. So. *SPOILER* Currently on my 3rd playthough of this with A2 and nines, where the android twins fight off the machines and 9S finally enters that new tower in the city center. Just got there about 2 hours ago lol. This entire soundtrack is a 5. The way each theme changes at different parts of the games is genius. Sometimes you get stripped down music box variations, when youāre hacking and it turns to 16-bit, when suddenly a vocal layer comes in over top an old melody. Hereās the deal, I absolutely love this game and this soundtrack and this song. 5
20.) Mansion Basement ā Iāve played the original RE many times on psx, but either never got to this part, or donāt remember this song. 07.23.21 | 23. The Duelist of the Roses - Busy and artificial sounding, then gives way to some unpleasant guitar. 2.2 |

07.23.21 | I'll add your recs when I'm off work :] I'll start putting the extra ones as bonus entries |

07.23.21 | 23. The Duelist of the Roses - kinda feel like fogza, except i kinda liked the guitar. 2.4 |
fogza
07.23.21 | lmao, pretty much felt the same but then I didn't... you're the best dedex :-) |
Scheumke
07.23.21 | 23. The Duelist of the Roses - 2.5 - Huh this feels like someone made a soundtrack and then artificially made it metal m/. Not a fan. |
DungeonBoy
07.23.21 | 22.) Otherworldy Foe - On it's own merit it's not a very good song. I mean it's okay, but it's kinda like an older cousin to the Mansion Basement. But within the context of the absolute masterpiece Earthbound, yeah it's a really great track. It doesn't stand very well on it's own though. 3.5
23.) Duelist of the Roses - Sounds like something from Y's. Very Japanese neoclassical/metal hybrid. There's like a zillion songs that sound like this, but I dig all zillion of them. Kinda short, and never really sinks it's hooks in like others unfortunately though. 3.2

07.23.21 | 23. Waichiro Ozaki - Grand video game theme with synth and fast percussion. Not especially memorable, but not bad, and blessedly short. 2.9 |

07.24.21 | 24. FeeCo Depot - this sounds like it would be fine looped during a level, but as a standalone track it gets boring after a minute. 2.3 |
Divaman
07.24.21 | 24. Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus OST - Slow, muddy, draggy opening. Track almost disappears at times. Also very repetitive. Track totally disappears a little after the 3-minute mark. ? Either way, it's not really cutting it for me. 2.2 |

07.25.21 | 25. The Legend of Korra: Book One Soundtrack - Slow and weird intro. Sounds like an old-timey song done on a kazoo or a snythetic ukulele or something. Sounds like something the band would have played to Jack Nicholson in The Shining. Not my thing. 2.1 |
fogza
07.26.21 | 26. Dig - I dunno if this sounds so good because I've been struggling with this month, or it's just great. Probably a bit of both. 3.8 |

07.26.21 | feels like the right place to say this, but FFVII OST fills me with emotions I canāt even describe. Holy tier |
Koris
07.26.21 | I think FFVII is one of those cases where the limited sound design actually makes the music more impactful. There's a strange sentimental charm with the keyboards and midi sounds used in that soundtrack, and for some reason it also makes a track like Anxious Heart even darker and more foreboding than it already is |
fogza
07.26.21 | Decided to drop my score for number 10 to 3 as it's not a fair pick. Updated the spreadsheet. |

07.27.21 | 27. Soundtrack from The Legend of Heroes - Sounds like pretty typical upbeat game music to me. 2.5 |
fogza
07.28.21 | 28. Goodbye - Also too popular, I think this song was also used in Breaking Bad. I like the instrumental aspect but the vocal is a bit silly. Would have probably scored it a 3.5 but for parity I'm putting it at 2.5 |

07.28.21 | 28. Goodbye - eh i vibed woohoo. 3.7 |
Divaman
07.28.21 | 28. Apparat - Weird moody noises (that almost sounds like chugging along a train track), followed by a sprinkling of guitar. Whispered singing, and eventually some quietly sung actual vocals. Pretty moody. Apparently, this is the theme song to "Dark", a Netflix show I've never watched. Not bad. Given the chance, it could grow on me. 3.1 |

07.29.21 | "If You Still Believe"
Nice piano and nice vocals. This is pleasant and folky. Kinda dragging on now honestly. Decent enough.
3/5
"Wretched Weaponry"
Sounds like loading screen music. Piano, some electronics, metal rattling light industrial. A lot is going on for how airy and poppy it is. The vocals aren't very engaging, so I doubt this is the game's theme. Then again, the strings just got very intense, so maybe I'm wrong. Good enough.
3.3/5
"Mansion Basement"
AVANT-GARDE HORNS. I mean it's unique and doesn't make me think of someone LARPing. Fuck it.
3.4/5 |

07.29.21 | "COLOSSEUM BATTLE ROUND 3"
80s synth-funk bass and twinkles, why not? Man, this month is just convincing me that video game soundtracks kinda suck. Like this isn't bad, but it feels like it's unremarkable on purpose because "it's about the gameplay, not the music, or something, just make it sound lively, but don't make it too ear catching."
3.2/5
"Otherworldly Foe"
Trippy chiptune with a dance beat. Simple enough and probably the best of the month.
3.6/5
"The Duelist of the Roses"
This sounds more like Pokemon music than the Pokemon one haha. This feels like a stylistic ripoff honestly. Very shreddy and metally. Annoying really.
2.5/5
"FeeCo Depot"
Very sluggish. A lot of pausing too. Is it over? There are two minutes left on the video, but I no longer hear anything. Based on all of the pausing, I'm legitimately not sure. I got bored and scrubbed and yes it's just silence.
2.3/5
"Lost My Heart in Republic City"
This is like a weird cross between Italian music and Chinese music. Like I'm riding in a gondola in a Shanghai bay. I guess there's a little jazz in there too with those drums. Not bad. Good show too even though season 2 was mostly terrible, especially the season 2 finale, my god Jinora was such a Deus ex machina.
3.6/5
"Dig"
Yup, this is 80s music classic rock musian. Reminds me of George Harrison's "Got My Mind Set on You." Cheesy as hell stuff.
2.9/5
"Overdosing Heavenly Bliss"
Kind of reminds me of the Super Smash Bros. Melee theme. This is whatever.
3/5
"Goodbye"
Creepy pounding so far. Mysterious gothy vocals and weird acoustic guitar. This certainly isn't boring. Maybe I'll check this show one day.
3.5/5 |

07.29.21 | 29. The World We Knew - This is a tricky one. The intro and verse is stuffed full of cheap synth adornment / sparkle which dates and cornifies it, but the chorus actually sounds lush and redeems the whole thing a bit. I'm going to settle on a 3 but with some editing and better presets this might have been really great. |

07.29.21 | 29. The World We Knew - with some editing and better presets this might have been really great [2] YET I'm a sucka for that kind of cheap synth thang. 3.5 |
Koris
07.29.21 | Damn, I didnāt think they sounded that cheap, lol. If anything itās pretty impressive for an indie game |
fogza
07.29.21 | tbf 80% of the stuff on this list sounds some combination of cheap or tinny to me, at least this had a pretty rad chorus. |
Divaman
07.29.21 | 29. Daniel Olsen - Slow poppy intro, ethereal female vocal. Kind of pretty. 3.1 |
Divaman
07.30.21 | 30. Trapped OST - Slow, pulsing strings. Kind of mournful. It's OK, but I don't have much else to say about it. 2.5 |

07.31.21 | 31. Audrey's dance - iconic music that fit the character perfectly. Outside of the show it drags a bit for me though, I'm a bit embarrassed to say. 3 |

3/5
"Opening Intro"
Kida jazzy. I like the horns.
3.5/5
"Seeds of the Crown"
Boring and ambient, but still sort of soothing. Not my thing.

08.02.21 | I mean that's fine with me cuz I think my 2nd rec won |
Divaman
08.03.21 | I think it did too, which is fine - it's a deserving winner (even if it DID just nudge out my first pick, heh heh.) But I've been trying to wait because I hate to call a winner with only three or four ratings. |

08.04.21 | OK, I'm calling it. |
