Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a band born and bred in California. School friends Anthony Kiedis (vocals), Michael Balzary, AKA Flea (bass),Jack Irons (drums) and Hillel Slovak (Guitar) formed a band that quickly became popular on the LA live circuit for their raucous, livelyperformances, which the band often played completely naked except for a tube sock tied around their genitals, as well as their unique blendof punk rock, funk, and rap. The group was soon recruited by EMI Records, and proceeded to release three increasingly successful albums(their self-titled 1984 debut, 1985's Freaky Styley, and 1987's The Uplift Mofo Party Plan). However, in mid-1988, tragedy struckwhen Slovak died of a heroin overdose after battling addiction for several months. Irons quit following Slovak's death, and the remainingmembers nearly called it quits before regrouping, and went through several short-lived lineup changes before finally regrouping with guitaristJohn Frusciante and drummer Chad Smith. The newly re-energized Chili Peppers released Mother's Milk in 1989, and it reached #52 inthe American charts, an unprecedented level of success for the band. Mother's Milk fulfilled the band's contract with EMI, and they optedto move to Warner Bros Records rather than remain with EMI. The 90's marked a decade of change, peaks and troughs for the Chilis. They recruited producer Rick Rubin, already well known for his workwith the Beastie Boys, Run-DMC, and Slayer, for their Warner Bros. debut, 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Propelledby hit single "Under the Bridge", the album was a huge commercial success, reaching #3 in America and #1 in Canada, Australia, and NewZealand. It was also praised by critics for effectively fusing funk, hard rock, and hip-hop elements. The Peppers toured extensively behindBlood Sugar Sex Magik, assisted by several notable groups, such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, andNirvana. However, Frusciante reacted poorly to the pressure of the band's newfound fame, and began acting out onstage, sabotagingperformances, and slipping into heroin addiction. He left the band in the middle of the tour, and Arik Marshall was hired to fill in forFrusciante for the remainder of the tour. Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro joined the band for 1995's One Hot Minute, which featured more experimental materialand incorporated Navarro's metal-influenced playing style into the Peppers' sound. Despite being a high-profile release, the album receivedmixed reviews and flopped commercially, and the ensuing tour in support of the album was plagued by difficulties, including everything froma motorcycle accident that mangled Kiedis's hand to multiple stints in rehab to a disastrous show in Japan played during a literal typhoon.Tensions mounted between band members, culminating in an acrimonious split with Navarro in 1998. Around this time, John Frusciante, whohad struggled with poverty and heroin addiction since his departure in 1992, finally entered a rehabilitation program. After 3 months in rehab,Kiedis and Flea approached Frusciante about rejoining the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Frusciante readily agreed, and the revamped band beganrecording a new album. Californication, released in 1999, was the band's most successful release to date, and received a mostlypositive critical reception. The album introduced a more conventional alt- rock sound, downplaying the hip-hop and funk elements that hadbeen prominent in their previous work. The Red Hot Chili Peppers released the follow-up to Californication, By the Way in 2002, and the two-disc Stadium Arcadiumfollowed in 2006. Frusciante amicably parted ways with the band in 2009 to focus on a solo career. The Peppers quickly hired longtime touringguitarist Josh Klinghoffer as his replacement, and have since recorded two albums, I'm With You (2011) and The Getaway (2016). « hide
