Trioscapes consists of Between the Buried and Me bassist Dan Briggs, as well as Walter Fancourt (tenor saxophone/flute) and Matt Lynch (drums). Initially, the band formed in order to create their own rendition of the Mahavishnu Orchestra classic ‘Celestial Terrestrial Commuters’. However, after a few rehearsals and a single live show, they decided the music was too demanding and fun to perform and that the project should continue. Eventually they had enough material for their first full-length album, Separate Realities, and so they entered the studio during the first week of October with Jamie King in Winston-Salem, NC. Trioscapes combines elements of 70s fusion with progressive rock, dark syncopated grooves, a flare for the psychedelic, and an unabashed love for both quirky Zappa-ish melodies and thunderous abrasive trade-off lines.
For the next two weeks, we have the distinct pleasure of streaming the eleven-minute title track from the album. It’s hard to describe what the band have managed to do with just bass, percussion and saxophone (along with a few random inclusions along the way), but it is definitely as catchy as it is technical. The press release mentions Zappa as an influence and I’m not familiar with most of his work, but I can say that the bass/drum/sax combination definitely reminds me of a few of the instrumental parts on the self-titled Mr. Bungle album (which also mention Zappa as an influence so…) — the off-kilter rhythms, sudden changes in direction and occasional weird melodies also kind of remind me of them, but there’s more to it than that. The best thing to do is to just hit ‘play’ on the audio player above and check it out. The album will be released in North America on May 8th through Metal Blade Records.

So don't listen to it. Music doesn't always have to be laced with emotion and "soul" to be good. Personally, I find stuff like this, and what you call "soulless wank" to be a fun and entertaining listen. You're entitled to your opinion of course, but there's no need to take a shit on people for it.
Song was awesome.

"Progression is a peculiar and divisive musical concept. Musicians constantly are attempting to progress their capacity and efforts, while fans have seemingly infinite amounts of debatable opinions on what progression actually denotes."

For me this album will definitely be memorable. If this isn't your bag, you won't get it, but if it is then you're going to dig the shit out of these jams.

Another thing to consider, some music is not written with the standard intent. For instance, Bach wrote Toccata and Fugue in D minor to test organs in a hall, yet that tune has a lot of push behind it. John Coltrane also wrote Giant Steps with the intent to push musicianship to the next level and that chart is amazing. He also solos for 4:30 minutes only taking a break for the piano to solo.
Technicality does not always diminish soul. That is like saying Albrecht Durer and Gustave Dore's art lacked emotion because of the heavy use of line work and highly skilled craftsmanship.

Did you think I just found a leak (or used a promo) and posted a song online? Ha ha, that wouldn't be very good.

"People hear ridiculously excessive technicality and automatically think it translates to good music."
- But this is good music, it's unusual how well they pull off the 70's King Crimson prog style especially with such limited instrumentation, but ill have to see how well the rest of the album holds up, it's off to a good start tho.

There really isn't a lot of 'beef'. It was one lowly user that thought that his opinion was fact.

Awww shucks

Well no, I was wondering how we managed to get official access (because it was clear that it was official, being "exclusive" and all) to the track, because this site really REALLY should be doing more stuff like that.

We have had a few other exclusives in the past (We've had exclusive streams of the last four Sarah Fimm albums). We should definitely do more, though. It's something I'm working on.
