——————————————————————————————-

Art By Numbers haven’t even released their debut album, and they’re already receiving a lot of attention. This attention probably initially stemmed from the band’s connection with The Human Abstract, but there’s definitely more to it than that. For those that are curious, Brett Powell (The Human Abstract’s drummer) is the band’s manager and Art by Numbers guitarists Victor Corral and Dustin Georgeson studied with A.J. Minette (also of The Human Abstract). The thing is that any thoughts that the band might be skating by on posts such as the one on The Human Abstract Facebook page that declared Art By Numbers, “the most exciting up and coming progressive band out there,” are put to rest once you hear the album. The band’s upcoming debut, Reticence: The Musical, is deserving of the attention that it is getting regardless of any extraneous circumstances.

This Fresno, California five-piece definitely bring a technical, yet melodic, style of progressive metal that will have people comparing them to everything from The Human Abstract and Protest the Hero to Coheed & Cambria. The thing is that they still have their own sound. For one, the band bring a prominent sense of melody and catchy vocal arrangements that occasionally remind me of more mainstream bands such as Anberlin, but they’re intertwined with crazy guitar leads, random time changes, piano fills and much more. Also, the vocalist leaves the crazy acrobatics and death growls to other bands and instead (mainly) sticks to a higher register that will either make or break the music for a lot of people. His vocals may take a little getting used to, but it shouldn’t take long for them to settle in and become just another excellent part of the album.

We’ll be streaming Reticence: The Musical for the next seven days, so don’t waste you chance to check this out before it is released on May 29th.

Let me know if anyone is having issues with the player. Otherwise, enjoy.

Player is cool, working well so far.

Interesting sound these guys have, remind me a bit of select The Fall of Troy works instrumentation wise.

Storm In A Teacup
05.21.12
Yeah i'm loving this so far definitely see the pth comparison not so much mars volta though

Storm In A Teacup
05.21.12
Idk maybe but the important part is this fucking rules.

Storm In A Teacup
05.21.12
Okay I'm getting the mars volta reference now.

Damn this is getting better as it goes.

Willie
05.21.12
I'm not really a fan of Mars Volta, which is probably why I missed the comparison.

Storm In A Teacup
05.21.12
I'm hearing it only in the little nuances of the frontman when he's singing at his loudest like in the begining of Panacea. Every song here is good.

Willie
05.21.12
Yeah. It turned out to be a really good album.

Another exclusive stream, niceeee (even if this doesn't really interest me)

The Man in the Box reminds me of The Human Abstract quite a bit. Looking forward to giving this a spin.

Willie
05.21.12
This is worth checking out, for sure. It grows on you a lot too.

TerraIncognita
05.21.12
The vocals take a little getting used to, but otherwise this kicks ass.

Willie
05.21.12
Yep. Waiting on Mx to post a banner so more people might notice this.

Evreaia
05.21.12
This is really good, PTH meets the mars volta, with riffing that reminds me of digital veil (but with a less mechanical feeling to it).

Also that piano is REALLY nice.

I just found out about these guys recently, I'm glad that I can actually give these a full listen with this stream. These guys definitely sound alot like THA, and PTH, with some of Cedric's vocal nuances, ill see if I can get past that enough to enjoy them as an individual entity.

05.21.12
Been following these guys since THA started posting about them, very cool that you landed the exclusive Willie. Enjoying this a lot.

bloc

I'm finding this to be pretty bad actually. Pretty much every song is an "alternate picking" exercise...

Willie
05.21.12
Bloc doesn't like this? Say it ain't so!

bloc
05.21.12
I do not appreciate the sarcasm

cyLOL
05.21.12
That's not totally fair to say... there's also some sweeping exercises in there as well.

DoctorVelvet
05.21.12
I don't think it's anything special or original. The vocals, make otherwise acceptable music, simply unlistenable.

Twelvetribes230
05.21.12
Enjoy it. The vocals do take time to get used to, but overall pretty good.

Deviant.

05.22.12
Gotta say I enjoyed it. It's fun.
The vocals offset the sometimes mechanical grinding of the guitars.

I can't escape the feeling of it being so sevenstrings.org'ish

ThunderNeutral21
05.22.12
its a 2.5

Willie
05.22.12
I'm sure the band didn't write their own review. Some of you need to get out more.

gabethepiratesquid
05.22.12
"I'm sure the band didn't write their own review. Some of you need to get out more."

a completely hyperbolic, super long and overexplained review by an account that was created the day these guys submitted the "exclusive stream" and has no comments or ratings besides one album (guess which one?). But yeah it was probably not the band. Not like I'm going, "HOW DARE THEY???" but it is kinda funny.

Willie
05.22.12
I see your point, but would blame another over-zealous fan boy like the 100s that 5'd the Deuce album because they think someone will believe the rating isn't inflated.

nextfoolmartyr
05.22.12
Not Bad, but i don't think it is that groundbreaking in the aspect of progressive, or even metal core music. 3.0 for me.

phcusf
05.24.12
I like it.
Like it allot.
i give it a 5/5 :D

Azn.
05.24.12
Will definitely download

Dreakon
05.25.12
This is actually really good. Gets a little same-y by the end, and it feels like it's lacking a little "depth" (if that makes any sense), but what is there is top notch. Especially digging the vocals.

Definitely have to find some way to get this into my rotation.

Spare
05.25.12
i've got a fuckin problem with the player: FUCKING AUTOPLAY WHAT THE FUCK MY AMP WAS AT FULL VOLUME

Willie
05.25.12
Ha ha. I apologize. The original player didn't auto play, but when I switched it out I forgot to make sure the new one didn't auto play too.

Dreakon
05.26.12
Growing on me the more I listen, this is awesome.

IRemember
05.27.12
I find this a welcome change to the usual shit metal bands are putting out these days.

Willie

--I was really upset that this just started playing.--

The first player didn't autoplay, but I forgot to do the same thing for this one. Oops.

Anyway, today is the last day of the stream so if anyone has been procrastinating. Also, the album was released today.
