By A Thread Mirrored Life
26 years after their 1999 debut on Revelation Records, By A Thread has returned with Mirrored Life?the group's third full-length and follow-up to 2011's self-titled record. It would be no stretch of the imagination to claim By A Thread as one of the longest-standing post-hardcore bands in Vancouver, and their longevity can be largely attributed to the strong foundation of trust and musical chemistry between John Franco and Sean Lande, who have acted as the group's creative core ever since their formation. While the group's earlier material takes clear nods from the likes of Sunny Day Real Estate, Mirrored Life marks a magnificent and graceful evolution into a heavier sound that feels entirely their own, with more of a fine-tuned sensitivity to mood and melody. Opening track "Void" kicks the album off with a burst of rock 'n' roll energy, but you'll quickly find that Mirrored Life isn't in a rush to go anywhere fast. These songs are longer and slower than most of their prior material, but every extra minute feels vital, with a deep well of tension bubbling between every sustained chord and melancholic lyric. By A Thread has aged like fine wine, and Mirrored Life may just be their best record yet.

Exist Hijacking The Zeitgeist
Hijacking The Zeitgeist is another album that I mostly checked due to the album art, but Exist quickly caught me off guard and captured my heart with this one. Metal which is progressive and whimsical while still firmly rooted in traditions of rock n' roll is always a winning recipe for me. This album is just very focused on sick grooves and even sicker riffs. The songs are memorable and structurally familiar with just enough melodic curveballs thrown in to evoke an emotional connection that will keep you coming back.

Raein Forme Sommerse
Forme Sommerse, at its core, is a practice in intuition. Instead of trying to recapitulate the past, Raein opted to utilize a fresh approach that would allow them to flow seamlessly from one idea to the next without any heed to the limitations of conventional structure. That sense of freedom is fully evident in these movements. These aren't exactly post-rock songs with linear progressions after all; they are more akin to a collection of peaks and valleys, with kinetic rhythms that push and pull like a waltz through turbulent waters, and the result is nothing short of staggering. All the hallmarks that made Raein such an influential force in the first place are still front and center here?their perfect balance between bright guitar tones, sensitive melodies, passionately chanted vocals, and a rhythmic urgency that feels vital every step of the way?but the form of the album makes their music feel more alive than ever.

Sweet Pill Unraveled
Sweet Pill revisits some choice cuts from their last EP and their 2022 debut LP. This EP is far from a lazy collection of "stripped down" acoustic songs to fulfill label contracts (although I'm kind of suspicious of how much Hopeless is pushing them to release content). No, Sweet Pill really sat down, fully deconstructed these songs, expanded upon and created new stretches of space in the arrangements, and then pieced them back together into something wholly revitalized. Sweet Pill used this EP as an opportunity to flex their chemistry and venture into new territory that would be really cool to see applied to new material. Bravo.

I honestly think this is a pretty good follow up to Underneath. They are really leaning into the weirder side of their influences. This is not a concise "___ genre" album, it's more of a scrapbook of interesting ideas from different genres glued together. If you really loved Underneath I think you'll enjoy most of these songs.

I am not familiar with this group's previous work - despite garnering the attention of acts like Muse and Placebo, they have seemingly not received much fanfare outside of Europe - but these guys clearly know when to use the right tool for the right job. This album is full of impressive dynamic sensibilities and restraint. Their third full length is haunted by a poltergeist of anger that is meticulous in when it allows itself to show, although it is almost always felt dwelling underneath the surface. There are some noise and post rock elements going on, but at its core this is a tried and true rock album. Excellent.

Oceana The Tide
I was (and still am) a huge fan of Oceana's sophomore album Birth.Eater, but I always disregarded The Tide due to it's different lineup. I viewed it as essentially being from a different band, and in my mind I imagined it sounding like a completely different band too. I don't know what I was thinking. The Tide is maybe a bit heavier, and doesn't have nearly as much clean singing, but other than that, it's not that different. Sure, Brennan Taulbee brought something really magical to the band when he replaced Keith Jones on vocals, but I think at it's core, Oceana was always Jack Burns. It's Jack's heavy, moody, and atmospheric guitar playing that made the band so special. So I felt really stupid when I finally put this on and immediately realized how much I've been missing out. This album is full to the brim with crunchy melodic riffs, catchy song writing, and to top it off, Keith's vocals are honestly amazing. Brennan might be one of my favourite singers of all time, but Keith's screams are so raw and emotive that this album almost veers into early 2000s atmospheric skramz
territory at times. The Tide is a classic of it's era, and I'm happy I finally gave it a chance. |

A Mourning Star Necessity Has Clipped My Wings
Metalcore aficionados A Mourning Star are back with a new EP, this time with a third (!) guitar player in tow and a clear intention to push the boundaries of their sonic palette. Necessity Has Clipped My Wings not only harbors some of the group's most ambitious songwriting to date, but it also sees them exploring new tonal dimensions for a sound that more vividly reflects the dichotomy between salvation and earthly suffering that lead vocalist Elijah Robinson often imbues into the group's lyrical themes. "Emerald Forest" opens the EP with a dreamlike instrumental piece that shimmers with acoustic guitar and bird calls before "An Abundance" shatters the mirror over our heads with a swath of metallic riffs. Throughout the remaining three songs the group pirouettes between blackened tremolos, triple-layered melodeath harmonies, and juggernaut breakdowns, but the crowning achievement of the affair has to be in the song "Cherubim," where the band shifts gears from their usual fare of jagged aggression into some borderline prog territory with soaring leads and a dive bomb that lands in a splash of glassy guitars and ghostly spoken vocals. This part doesn't last long, but it's a clarion call that A Mourning Star are no longer purely concerned with revivalism; they are actively seeking ways to develop as a group, and this EP is proof that they are on a blazing path.

I haven't cared about this band since 2010, and I thought amo and That's The Spirit were incredibly boring, so I was not expecting this album to be so much damn fun. The mish mash of genres here just works so well for me, combining hyper pop with metalcore and grungy alt metal. It's like BMTH had a baby with underscores and Deftones. This album is 55 minutes long, but the variety keeps it so engaging. It almost feels more like listening to a playlist as opposed to a cohesive album, which I think was an intentional move to capture the attention of todays society of instant gratification induced brain death. I admit, there's some stinkers on this album. In particular I don't looove the way this band does it's Deftones rip off as it feels more like an unoriginal imitation than a fresh spin. Loathe does that type of stuff so much better. Some of the straight up pop songs were a bit lackluster as well, but when the band hits that sweet spot mixing chaotic blasts of electronic pop with metalcore, it just lights up all the right neurons in my brain. I can see why so many people despise this shit, but I think not being a BMTH fan prior, and thus having zero expectations of what they should or should not sound like really made it easy for me to get into this.

actually shocked by how much I don?t hate this. As a certified swancore hater I was expecting some absolute dogshit like Galleons or Wolf and Bear, but this is somehow way better than both of those bands last albums.

Lots of cool ideas here and a ton of potential that the band has not quite tapped into yet. The whole thing just flows awkwardly even though it's almost always enjoyable. They are clearly just throwing things against the wall right now to see what sticks, so it's hard to fault them for what feels like a necessary step in their evolution. I'm excited to see if they tighten things up for their next release.
