Hail to the King

Alright, let’s get this out of the way. There’s three decent tracks here (Shepherd of Fire, Heretic, and Coming Home) and all three of them are saved by having good/decent hooks and killer Syn solos.

The rest of the album is plagued by extremely uninspired songwriting, including the songs I’ve already mentioned, basic ass lyrics about medieval bullshit or something, and really half assed drumming, although I don’t blame Arin. He clearly showed some chops when they played live.

It’s been said before but this is A7X emulating their heroes in the worst ways possible. Doing Time is a GnR b side, which is already a terrible thing to begin with.

Play it Again: Heretic, Coming Home, Shepherd of Fire, The Black Album.

Skip it: Literally everything else, but the worst offenders are Doing Time and Crimson Day. The first is practically plagiarizing GNR, which, why would you ever want to do that in the first place? And the second is overly sentimental garbage that still feels insincere

Alright now we have some pretty good tunes mixed with some pretty terrible ones.

I’m not a very creative writer so I’ll just put it out there, Afterlife is one of the best songs the band has ever made. Orchestral parts that don’t feel out of place, a catchy as fuck chorus, great main riff, and possibly Syn’s best solo ever. Brompton Cocktail is damn good too.

Other than that… ugh. Almost Easy had a chorus good enough to make up for all that “I’m not Insane” pre chorus bullshit. A Little Piece of Heaven and Critical Acclaim are almost saved solely because of The Rev’s great vocals, and Gunslinger isn’t half bad. Most everything else is terrible with brief moments of greatness. Lost is kind of good until that godawful shoe horned in auto tuned chorus.

Play it on repeat: Afterlife and Brompton Cocktail

Fire it into the sun: Dear God and Unbound (The Shitty Ride)

Sounding the Seventh Trumpet

Now we can finally get to the albums that don’t suck.

But there’s a catch! This is just some basic pretty basic metalcore with a few moments of of greatness that show how good the band would become.

Turn the Other Way is a kick ass metalcore tune, and We Come Out at Night is another really solid cut. Most everything else is some decent riffs with Shadows’ amateurish vocals. There’s catchy hooks here and there but most of it is definitely a young band trying to find their sound. Also, special shout out to that horrible album cover. Looks like someone with Parkinson’s tried to make Cradle of Filth album art.

Good tracks that make you reminisce about teenage heartbreak, before the malaise settled in: Turn the Other Way, We Come Out At Night, Shattered By Broken Dreams.

Bad tracks that make you reminisce about how horrible your taste in music was: Warmness on the Soul, Streets

City of Evil

Avenged goes Iron Maiden! Pretty much every song here is great instrumentally, but man, Matt’s vocals really get tiresome from time to time. The biggest offender is Seize the Day, which is just a cornball ass ballad that could’ve been good with better vocals. And god, I’m normally not one to care about music videos, but what a hilariously stupid one this is. Syn shredding on that casket? Hilarious.

But there’s so much to love here. Strength of the World and Sidewinder are two of my favorite tracks the band has made, the storytelling is great and the instrumentals remain entertaining throughout, and most others are pretty fucking good too. Progressive and catchy, the songwriting is creative and more importantly, fun as all hell.

Had Matt not decided to channel his worst Axl Rose impression this could’ve been a classic.

Best Iron Maiden Worship: Strength of the World, Sidewinder, The Wicked End, MIA

Obligatory Dogshit Ballad: Seize the Day

The Stage

Now we’re getting to the cream of the crop. Avenged goes prog without becoming pretentious assholes.

The title track opens with a great tapping riff that gives way to a “fuck both sides” lyrical display that I totally get down with, then later has one of the most beautiful bridges I’ve heard in a metal song.

Angels and Roman Sky are further proof that the band is capable of making absolutely gorgeous instrumentation.

God Damn is a short banger that kicks total ass, and Simulation is just incredible cheese.

Just a really great prog metal record that you’d never expect from a band as mainstream as A7X.

Prog Heaven: The Stage, Paradigm, God Damn, Higher, Roman Sky.

Wankfest Bullshit: Its hard for me to pick a bad track here but I’ll go for it, the six and last four minutes of Exist, but the middle section is actually very pretty and it really shines on their Grammy performance. Creating God isn’t great either.

Nightmare

Now here is where we see where the band really matured. It’s still got some corny lines (“ITS YOUR FUCKIN NIGHTMARE”, “TOTAL NIGHTMARE… GOD HATES US!!!”, they really like nightmares on this record), but for the first time in the bands career we actually get multiple great ballads, most that even outshine the more metallic cuts.

It also should be said that even though I fucking despise Dream Theater, Mike Portnoy put in one hell of a performance that really does our boy Jimmy justice. Some songs are absolutely heartbreaking. A generational talent lost way too young.

Songs to Cry to: So Far Away, Victim, Save Me, Tonight the World Dies, Buried Alive, Natural Born Killer

Songs to Die to: Danger Line

Waking the Fallen

Here it is, the classic that every hardcore A7X fan loves. They took the blueprint that was STST and came damn close to perfecting it. Matt’s vocals are improved by a large margin, and the addition of lead guitarist Synyster Gates adds a layer of technicality that just isn’t possible with one guitarist. And not only is there a good ballad, it’s possibly the best one in their entire discography!

Certified metalcore classic.

Best Songs to Jam in Hot Topic in the mid 2000’s: Chapter Four, Remenissions, Eternal Rest, I Won’t See You Tonight Parts 1 & 2, And All Things Will End.

Overly Melodramatic Bullshit That You Still Probably Jammed in Hot Topic 20 years ago: Clairvoyant Disease, Radiant Eclipse.

Life Is But a Dream...

Might be recency bias but fuck that, this album was my favorite when it came out and I still spin it multiple times a week nearly 3 months on.

“Avenged Goes Avant-Garde”, here we have the most creative batch of songs that the band has ever recorded. The reoccurring themes of existentialism and absurdism also really resonate with me at this point in my life, and I’m sure a lot of folks can relate to that.

There’s a couple of minor missteps here and there, mainly some really abrupt transitions in We Love You, and Easier can’t decide if it wants to be an entrancing synth and vocoder track or just straight up butt rock. But that doesn’t hold it back from being the best album of 2023 and the best album of A7X’s career.

The Rev would be proud.

Best Tracks to Trip Balls to: All of them… but especially Nobody, Cosmic, G, Ordinary, Death.

Worst Track: Easier
