11.08.23 | what is the difference between prog-death and tech-death? Am dumb |
Wildcardbitchesss
11.08.23 | Tech is wankery bullshit with zero substance most of the time. Shit like Rings of Saturn vs like Horrendous
But I really don’t jam a lot of prog so that’s just kinda my little read on the situation |
artiswar
11.08.23 | does prog-death not have wankery too? I don't understand the delineation between the two |
Dedes
11.08.23 | For something both proggers and tech AND quality jam this Augury-Concealed |
MeatSalad
11.08.23 | @art prog-anything typically has expansive or unconventional songwriting, some amount of experimentation, a variety of dynamics and a fair dose of wank (although not required). Tech death mostly just focuses on the last thing but the two aren't mutually exclusive. Most worthwhile tech death has some prog stuff going on |
Wildcardbitchesss
11.08.23 | most tech I’ve jammed (which ain’t much) sounds impressive at first but you quickly realize there ain’t a lot under the hood. (good) Prog death usually brings the riffs and has interesting song structure. Tech often feels like “wow isn’t it impressive how fast I’m playing. Be impressed you fuckin plebs.” and feels disjointed as fuck a lot of the time.
It’s like if Yngwie Malmsteen down tuned his guitar and started growling |
Dedes
11.08.23 | I think the best of tech death knows how to not make atmosphere and extreme proficiency mutually exclusive. Tbh that's why I love stuff like Nile, Fallujah, Augury, sort of Quo Vadis. There's a highly distinctive atmosphere and structure about them while having that short-shock factor of damn ain't that wank impressive. |
Pikazilla
11.08.23 | Exotic Animal Petting Zoo - Tree of Tongues |

11.08.23 | also fuck djent agreed |
Azazzel
11.08.23 | don't need us to surf the RYM prog chart so besides the obvious -
you need to take the Enslaved pill first off, jam more Isis than just Oceanic
figure out what sub-genre you want your prog metal mixed with, for me it was finetuning you know, how much power lead/vox do I want cause (those guys write lots of prog)? female vox? metalcore cleans angst? do I just want little wrinkles on established genre or linear crescendos like in lots of melo or post? or do you want just off the wall experimental "prog"? maybe you just like ornate instrumentation (symphonic, classical, folk harpsichords) etc
Ne Obliscaris (neo-classical)
Thy Catafalque - Meta (Hungarian prog-folk metal)
Nokturnal Mortum - The Voice of Steel (pagan-black)
Allegaeon - Damnum (melo-tech death)
Demoniac - So It Goes (prog-thrash)
Gorod - Leading Visions (french prog-death with crazy melodies)
Oranassi Pazazu - Värähtelijä (psychedelic black)
Royal Hunt - Paradox (symphonic, power vox)
The Mars Volta - Bedlam in Goliath (my p fav and v proggy since you listed Deloused)
Sermon - Of Golden Verse (for your Tool rec)
Der Weg Einer Freiheit (black post-metal)
--avant garde/exp--
Carnival in Coal - Collection Prestige (black grind)
Oxxo Xoox (gothic doom)
Unexpect (theatrical)
Estradasphere - Palace Of Mirrors (jazz fusion/klezmer/metal)
Igorrr (break-beat black)
