| My new record is out!
Hey all. I just released my latest record 'Clouds', which is something wildly different from my last outing 'Everlasting, Everfleeting'. It's a record where I really pushed myself to make a 'rock' record, with a lot less metal influences. It took a long time to finish because I lost motivation halfway through, and the mixing cost a lot of time as well. Anyway, it's finally finished. I view this record mostly as an experiment, and I know the vocals aren't the best everywhere haha. Thanks for listening, and please tell me what you think! | 1 | | Kars Landman Clouds
The record is available on bandcamp and streaming services!

Run is a track heavily inspired by Dutch poprock group BLOF (CHECK THEM OUT!). Quite a simple track but has a lot of layers. | 3 | | Leprous Malina
Dreams was the lead single, and instrumentally quite interesting. It kinda feels like a weird mashup between 70s and modern prog, although the diehards probably disagree | 4 | | Red (USA) Of Beauty and Rage
Paradise is a really cool song imo, love how I finally made a track that actually sounds like a proggier version of the hard rock/alt metal band RED. | 5 | | John Mayer The Search for Everything
Smoke was another single, and was made around the chord progression of 'In the Blood' by John Mayer. Another simple track, but I think the melody and main riff are fun. | 6 | | Deftones Diamond Eyes
Wondering is a weird track. Kinda all over the place, but the chorus has a Deftones vibe imo. Not really sure what to compare the rest to haha | 7 | | Steven Wilson The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories)
Another Distortion was highly experimental for me. I've always wanted to write something that was very jazzy, and although it doesn't really have the lush chords and weird dissonance, I think this translates well as a jazzrock track. Really like the drums in the first verse. | 8 | | Touche Amore Stage Four
Leaving is something different, some kind of punk rock track. Chords are cool, I really like the switch up in the chorus and the outro. The vocals that I added at the end really make this track a lot better. | 9 | | Caligula's Horse Bloom
Free is one of my favourites for sure. Nice chords, cool build ups, and I love the snare sound. | 10 | | Enslaved In Times
Peace is a big song, that is kind of divided into three parts. I'm surprised by how well the parts flow into eachother. The outro is amazing imo | 11 | | Robbie Williams Life Thru a Lens
Lost is sad. One of the most poppy songs I've ever written (and probably ever will). | 12 | | Kars Landman Glimpses
PLEASE TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK AND LISTEN TO MY OTHER RECORDS THANKS SO MUCH GUYS LOVE SPUTNIK!
If you hate the vocals, give this instrumental record a try! | |

07.15.20 | Please check it out my dudes! | notagenius
07.15.20 | Okay, i am directing to it. | Beardog
07.15.20 | thanks, let me know what you think! | porcupinetheater
07.15.20 | Tight, I’ll check it after work | bloodshy
07.15.20 | Does it sound like Robbie Williams? If so, not checking. JK probably would still check. Home right now, will listen at work. | Beardog
07.15.20 | Nah it doesn't sound like Robbie Williams at all haha! Thanks man! | notagenius
07.15.20 | Good points.
styles are very diverse. It's awesome. (smoke and Leaving are my favs.)
instumental performance is generally very very good.
music structure is quite interesting
Bad aspects.
The recording environment and mixing is poor.
Vocal pitch issues
but you do all of this on your own. which is remarkable. will need to look up to you | Beardog
07.15.20 | Thanks man! What did you found so poor about the mixing? | notagenius
07.15.20 | I haven't mixed anything myself, so I can't tell you the details, only how I feel about it.
The volume of the mixing is fine, but the spacial arrangement is quite problematic. I've listened to Leaving quite a few times, and at the 30 second mark, the instruments are all in, and the panning issue is showed up suddenly you know, the sounds are all coming straight at me. So I think at least panning still needs to be greatly improved.
(edit: But I've come to adore the fact that you have done it yourself. hoho well done) | DungeonBoy
07.15.20 | honestly, I thought the mix is fine from the one track I listened to. I agree with the "vocal pitch issues" it's the same criticism I normally have, apart from the programmed everything. but we are living in the digital age i suppose. do you use any sort of auto tune on your vox? | DungeonBoy
07.15.20 | supdog | Beardog
07.15.20 | Not sure what the panning issue is, never noticed that. Seems weird to me but oh well... Butt yeah, some vocal tracks here were pretty bad but I thought they fit the tracks best emotion-wise so some autotune was used for sure. The weird pitch issues also just have to do with the fact that my singing is just downright bad in places. | bloodshy
07.15.20 | i agree with the vocals... kinda kills it for me
i did like the instrumentals though, couldn't tell if i liked the idea of vocals in it/the vocal melody or not | Allergist
07.16.20 | Very awesome! I will check it out for sure. | Beardog
07.16.20 | Thanks @allergist
@bloodshy makes sense, I should take vocal lessons which I probably will next year, but I didn't want to delay this record even more haha.
| CugnoBrasso
07.16.20 | I see you're using Reaper, you can adjust your pitch using the manual correction in ReaTune.
I'm personally not a fan of some of the virtual instruments you're using, and the lows/low-mids are pretty busy at times, but these are minor problems and the mixing is fine and very enjoyable overall. The songwriting is also strong, too bad your voice is often out of tune. | Beardog
07.16.20 | Yeah that's what I'm doing but it's not enough lol. Thanks! | Asdfp277
07.16.20 | fixed the artwork for 2, gonna check the other one
remember that album names must not include the ampersand character ('&'), as it creates issues. artwork must not be bigger than 600x600px, nor any larger than 200kb !
good luck on your endeavours ! | Beardog
07.16.20 | Oh thanks haha, didn't know | CugnoBrasso
07.16.20 | Haha I don't know what to say then, maybe try using it twice?
Too bad, because the way you arranged those tracks is very interesting and you're clearly very talented, but those vocals are really keeping this from being great. | Beardog
07.16.20 | haha not sure if that works. I'm planning to take singing lessons the coming year so my next record will be stunning ha. | CugnoBrasso
07.16.20 | No doubt! | Beardog
07.16.20 | If you don't like the vocals, Glimpses (my 'debut') is instrumental :) | CugnoBrasso
07.16.20 | I'll give it a try | notagenius
07.17.20 | plus plus: your natural tone is quite good. | Beardog
07.17.20 | Thanks, my vocals have atleast massively improved compared to the record I released before, but that had more screaming, which I don't really have problems with | Bedex
07.18.20 | I'm pumped for another record with improved vocals after singing lessons dude, I listened to a couple tracks and the instrumentals really are fun and have a lot of depth to them. But the vocals do drag the record down, I'm afraid I agree with the others. Adding more fx on the vocal track would help massively I think but unless you autotune it hard that won't solve the pitch issues here and there. Going for a shoegaze/dream pop on the voice with heaps of reverb may help give it more texture and depth to match the vast instrumentation, but that depends on the artistic route you want to take of course. Good job on the whole man this shows a lot of promise! | Beardog
07.19.20 | Thanks a lot! Adding a lot more effects wouldn't really serve the music that well I think, that would just seem out of place. Next record will be more metal so it's easier to hide bad vocals there, but I hope to complete that with improved vocals after lessons. |
