04.09.23 | 'Selling the metal you have vinyl on the other hand is extremely based, I was shocked at how much some of my shit was worth'
yeah i fully understand why some people talk about records as an investment. a lot of mine have gone up in value with time (although a fair few have gone down as well)
like my Frontierer record for example is now mad expensive. |
PotsyTater
04.09.23 | CD’s may be cheaper, but you can’t sell them for 5x what you paid for them in 10 years when your taste inevitably completely changes and buy new records with that money |
budgie
04.09.23 | "yeah i fully understand why some people talk about records as an investment. "
i'm sitting on this OG pressing of hvis lyset tar oss and i'm sure it will be worth more than my spirit down the line
"not caring about vinyl so much anymore"
i feel this too. i got my RME headphone amp, my focal cans, and a QOBUZ streaming subscription and it's the majority method of media consumption these days. i spent a long time determining if vinyl really sounds different and i came to the conclusion that the higher register being muted just means i can turn the volume up more before treble fatigue. but some older releases are mastered differently for vinyl so thats another subject. early mercyful fate pressings sound absolutely different from any digital release it's kind of troubling to accept |
PotsyTater
04.09.23 | Vinyl is honestly annoying af, but it’s also a really addicting and rewarding hobby and one of the funnest complete wastes of money I can think of |
Jasdevi087
04.09.23 | I ain't buying them shits to invest, I want to keep them lmao. I have a first press of Leaving Your Body Map that I bought on sale that's worth like 200 bucks but fuck you, it's mine, i'm keeping it |
PotsyTater
04.09.23 | I don’t buy them to invest either and think people that do flip vinyl are scumbags but js, it’s nice that if you eventually can’t stand the sight of something in your collection (like what happened to me with 95% of my metal records) you can reinvest them into new records you do enjoy. |
Deez
04.09.23 | I only started buying vinyl about 3 years ago strictly for only shit I really wanted now ive got like 400 non bought cheap all piled up taking up room, then I bought a fking record cleaning machine, constant upgrades, replaced my gambling addiction with a vinyl addiction wish I hadnt started.
Some babies here though |
budgie
04.09.23 | yeah buying it for the express purpose of flipping it in the future is lame imo. but knowing that it's appreciating or likely to appreciate is cool
i lucked out at a record store in north county SD on a first pressing of adolescent's debut for $3 and realized later that day. sold it for $120 6mo later but maybe should have just kept it cause it's such a cool piece of history |
Jasdevi087
04.09.23 | oh yeah absolutely, I still need to get around to selling my fucking Eminem LP lol. but yeah if i want to get rid of my old butt metal CDs i pretty much have to donate them |
Mort.
04.09.23 | yeah i buy records because i like having physical copies of my favourite albums
the investment side is just an added justification for spending money on something i dont actually need that spends most of the time sitting in a crate in the corner of the my room
|
budgie
04.09.23 | "constant upgrades, " gettin drunk and deciding you need to blow $450 on a denon cart ouch.
|
Jasdevi087
04.09.23 | even the tatty, beat the fuck up ones you can still get some schmoe to pay 5 bucks for, it's pretty good |
Deez
04.09.23 | Yeah I also always planned to move to Cambodia with a few years so every penny I wasnt of vinyl is more just sitting here in storage in a few years. Yay. |
PotsyTater
04.09.23 | Yeah I have a huge set up of vintage gear that truly sounds better to me than any other means of music listening I have at my disposal and the entire process of listening this way is extremely novel and taking care of my records is a satisfying compulsion. But for the most part I just like having physicals of things. I’m not going to lie and say I play the fuck out of most of my records. I’m usually multi-tasking when I listen to music, so fiddling with physicals and flipping records etc is just not practical most of the time. |
Deez
04.09.23 | Same I get new inners, Outers, Put them on the record cleaner or let them stack and have a day cleaner. Absolute pain in the arse. When it hits though... |
PotsyTater
04.09.23 | Downsizing my record collection to essentials is one of the best things I’ve done. I sold most of my metal and also most of the 200 or so records I inherited from my grandma that I have been lugging around with me every time I’ve moved over the last decade and it was such a relief tbh. |
Deez
04.09.23 | haha yeah im dreading having to ever move this shit, Theres nothing I dont want tho which is a good thing |
PotsyTater
04.09.23 | I really enjoy opening a new record, cleaning it, trying to salvage the hype sticker to add to a fresh outer sleeve, resleeving the inners etc and spinning for the first time. Such a satisfying ritual. And then you organize it on the shelf and don’t listen to it again for a year 😂 |
budgie
04.09.23 | i downsized from 300 or so to about 15 rn. got anxiety from having that big physical footprint and moving so often
and when i was in europe i had to get rid of 100 or so before i moved countries again. having a shitton of audio gear is a pain in the ass |
PotsyTater
04.09.23 | Yup, truly. I just bought a condo last year tho so for the first time I feel like I’m settling down enough that it’s no longer a big deal. The plan is to inevitably upgrade within the next decade but that’s more than a long enough period of time that it’s no longer anxiety inducing. |
Deez

04.09.23 | I started mine around three years ago as well deez, I’ve kept it to around 50 at the minute, still listen to ‘em all the time.
Desperate for 8! |
Deez
04.09.23 | Its fking brutal mate, Working in the middle of nowhere for 8 months does it to, almost itch to spend my money on something. Been great reconnecting with physical music after years of downloads though for sure |
unclereich
04.09.23 | I also don’t care about records anymore. As user deez said it was an itch that I scratched. Got addicted to collecting the rarest shit possible and this nicest sounding equipment possible. Once that “hobby” peaked- that is to say I couldn’t think of anymore records I wanted- I moved onto film, buying every rare steelbook and inevitably an expensive television and surround sound to watch them on. It’s truly cringeworthy but I always placated my guilt with the notion I could get my money back on most of it. Crazy the amount I made on records alone. Some I will always keep and cherish others helped pay for my next addiction(s)-cars, baseball cards, and guns. I also just sold off my extensive Michael myers mask collection last fall along with my legos last winter. Never thought I’d end up like my hoarder father but here I am 👍 |
IsisScript80
04.09.23 | I'm prone to hoarding shit too (a massive bone of contention in our house). Thankfully (to some extentat least), my desire for physical media doesn't extend to vinyl, although I see the appeal. If it's an album I really like, I'll invariably buy the CD, else it feels like I never truly "own" the thing.
Thank fuck though, I don't go for the cassette revival... it was completely redundancy the first time once they figured how to make CDs not skip and media you can record on. Useless format now and just a format exclusively for fetishists. |
Mesm277
04.09.23 | It's addicting. Jealous of your Shikari copies! Pondering getting the Lateralus picture disk but apparently it sounds like crap but is very visually appealing |
budgie
04.09.23 | "I also just sold off my extensive Michael myers mask collection" bruh |
Sinternet
04.09.23 | also a chronic collector/hoarder, although i've gotten back into vinyl much more again recently. made it a rule now to sell any cds i have which i also have on vinyl unless its either got bonus tracks on it or is otherwise special in some other regard, so that cleared out about 200 or so i was holding on to (although thats only a small portion of what i have unfortunately). i'll still always collect cds because they're dirt cheap and its much more common to find cool stuff at random places like charity shops, who usually either have jack shit when it comes to records or someone told them about discogs and they charge out the arse for anything that isn't a terrible 1960s classical recording, but records are just way more fun. |

Cool talks on the collecting habit too. I've collected so many cds idk what to do with them. I also started collecting some ps2 games again recently but there's not a ton I wanted so I'm already done with it and played most of the ones I want. (Some didn't hold up) |

04.10.23 | anyone have any white whales out there that they want to own? despite the fact im done with vinyl my whale is still out there in the form of death grips' the money store cassette. there were two presses: one official the other a bootleg. I have the bootleg but id have no issue dropping a grand or more on the official press. |
PotsyTater
04.10.23 | I have a few but Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus and Cannibal Ox - Cold Vein OG pressings are near the top of the list
I also really want Organized Konfusion - Stress and Andy Stott - Faith In Strangers real bad |

04.10.23 | I have funcrusher on cassette and vinyl! I also have both presses of the cold vein. |
PotsyTater
04.10.23 | Wooowww that’s fucking legit. Which pressing do you prefer of cold vein? I’ve heard the artwork for the repress is kind of shitty but the pressing itself sounds great?
Also you can cross faith in strangers off the list lmao I just looked it up and they just repressed it, I’m copping right now hahahah |

Fuckin free shipping over 150$ for that Andy Stott record so I got lords of the underground self titled, kmd black bastards, and Kool keith black Elvis as well lol |
unclereich
04.10.23 | the art on the repress is enlarged that caused it to be blurry. not egregious IMO but noticeable. I bought it to listen to it and it sounds great, a very crisp, faithful repress. worth the money? uh no lol 100 is crazy but taking into account it's a very underground group that likely needs the 100 bucks more than me, I was more than happy to pay. I want to say it shipped from the bandcamp across country to me in about 3 days. just need the translucent blue press now. |
PotsyTater
04.10.23 | Yeah idk if I’m gonna spend over $100 on it I might as well just buy an OG pressing if I can find a good condition good price option |
PotsyTater
04.10.23 | Did you get it from the ihiphop bandcamp? |
unclereich
04.10.23 | yes from ihiphop, cant say it enough how well packaged it was and how fast it got here. 100 might be tough for a nice 1st press. a battered one you might be able to find for around 120 |

04.10.23 | If I die I will leave you mine |

04.10.23 | Yeah I took a quick glance at discogs and they START at like $140 CAN or so. I honestly was entirely unaware that you could still but this repress new tho so that’s great news even if it’s a ridiculous price point. Maybe I’ll cop. Ihiphops website is ghetto as fuck if you didn’t tell me that you actually got your and it was packaged well I might not trust them lmao |

Managed to cop a Can Ox Og for like 80 dollars, little bit noisy even after a wash but not to back. Co Flow are all still money, Just bought Cult Favourite for Madmen only think there was only every 300 the put another 40 online they found.
Altar of PLagues- Teether Glory and Injury
Corrupted - El Futuro En La Oscuridad 2x7s

04.10.23 | I've probably spent 10k on my collection, I definitely have a problem. Let me know if you wanna trade or anything Mort. Don't sell that sikth album until you're sure they're repressing it. It's the albums 20th anniversary this year. |
