Manowar Albums: Worst to First

Undisputed kings of Macho Metal. These guys deserve way more respect than they receive.
11Manowar
The Lord of Steel

The only Manowar album I can safely say I’m not a fan of. The loud ass bass sound is just about the only thing memorable about this entire record. If this is their final hurrah, this would be a sad note to go out on. Hopefully the next time they’re in the studio they’ll try writing some new material; not holding my breath though.

Best Track: Righteous Glory
Grade: D-
10Manowar
Louder Than Hell

Probably the most generic album Manowar has ever released. A couple great tracks here and there, but nothing to write home about.

Best Track: Return of the Warlord
Grade: C-
9Manowar
Gods of War

I don’t dislike this album as much as others do, but with that being said, I can’t really argue against the most prevalent critiques. There are so many good tracks on this record, but they get buried under all of those obnoxious interludes. This is a prime example of a bloated album that didn’t have to be. However, I do commend them for trying something different.

Best Track: Die For Metal
Grade: C-
8Manowar
Into Glory Ride

I guess you could say this record falls victim to the sophomore slump phenomenon, but that’s only in comparison to the juggernaut that preceded it. On its own merits, this is still some solid, aggressive, 80’s power metal.

Best Track: Gloves of Metal
Grade: C+
7Manowar
The Triumph of Steel

This is a damn good album, but a little too ambitious for its own good. While the 28 minute epic ‘Achilles, Agony, and Ecstasy’ is pretty dope, it does come off as a little too self indulgent. This problem could have been fixed if they had just made the separate parts their own individual tracks.

Best Track: Master of the Wind
Grade: B-
6Manowar
Sign of the Hammer

BURNING EMBERS OF THE SECOND DEATH WILL COME IN THE NIGHT!

Best Track: The Oath
Grade: B
5Manowar
Fighting the World

The biggest complaint people have about this record is the more commercial sound these beefcakes shot for on this album. Sure, the aggression is a bit subdued, but the hooks are plentiful and the production is some of the best power metal has to offer. Get the stick out of your ass, and join the fight.

Best Track: Master of Revenge/Black Wind, Fire and Steel
Grade: B
4Manowar
Warriors of the World

Probably the cheesiest record the boys ever released, and I fuckin love it. I will never understand the hate for Warriors of the World. This record is a top to bottom anthem factory. Insanely underrated, and in need of serious evaluation.

Best Track: Warriors of the World United
Grade: B+
3Manowar
Battle Hymns

About as good as a debut record can get. Not many bands are able to knock it out of the park with their debut, but Manowar sure is an exception. Classic early power metal, and one of the bands’ crowning achievements.

Best Track: Battle Hymn
Grade: A-
2Manowar
Kings of Metal

Kings of Metal is prime Manowar exemplified. Take the infectious hooks from ‘Fighting the World’, slap on a level of aggression akin to Sign of the Hammer, and you’ve got a fucking masterpiece. Manowar, indeed, kills.

Best Track: Hail and Kill
Grade: A
1Manowar
Hail to England

Hail to England, shit-heads. One of the finest power metal records of all fucking time. The only reason it isn’t regarded as such is due to the stigma of bearing the Manowar logo on the cover. Fucking shame, because this is one of the crowning achievements of 80’s power metal.

Best Track: Kill With Power
Grade: A
