Having more people in a band means more people need to be paid, more equipment to be hauled, less space in the tour-van/tourbus, etc. None of that is a problem when your laptop can do all the shit an extra guitarist does, but doesn't get on your nerves.

Beardog 07.29.18	SitruK6, you did misunderstand my point about Royal Blood. What I mean is this: I think they are a prime example of what a bassist can do to sound like there's two instruments being played. It's a great tool for these metalcore/djenty bands to have chugs (lowest string, mostly muted, notes) and bass played by 1 guy. Since the bass is playing these chugs exactly the same way as the guitarist, with the effects you mentioned, this will result in a sound that's hard to distinguish from two people playing the part on different instruments. Also, you would be better off using your ears while listening, the bass in Comet's Fall is actually following the lower guitars note for note (expect for the one part around 2:35)... A little pathetic that you're trying to point the finger at me like that with a false statement. You could've just said that the production of that song is awful, cause that's atleast something that most people can agree on. I edited the Royal Blood comment, I hope it's more clear now

Bass is meant to be felt as much as it is heard. I also doubt that they record bass parts with their guitars. They sound too different even when they're in the same registers.

I know, it makes sense to still record bass in a studio environment, but I'm glad they don't (atleast to my knowledge) use backing tracks for it live. @Confessed There must be a band somewhere doing great things in that category. @Steak I don't mean to hate on the guitarists at all with this list, just want to start the discussion about bands writing music they just can't perform live. 4 was mostly meant as an example of a bassplayer that actually adds something to the music, where 5 uses almost 10 different guitarmelodies at the same time in a segment. Although I do think Monuments' music transcends well enough to a live audiences with only 2 of those melodies/riffs being played at once.

Beardog 07.30.18	Because the bass would be unnecessary if you don't fully highpass the guitars. I tried listening for a basstrack when I heard saw them live but couldn't hear it, so even if they use it, it's hidden well enough to not make it sound artificial atleast. Synth tracks make way more sense cause those are actually different melodies being played than the two guitarists do, the bass is the same as the rhythm guitar in almost every AaL song.

I'm trying to start a discussion what people think about this, and if bands should focus on writing music that is performable, and, especially in this kind of metalcore/djenty style, should stop focussing on all the sampling and backing tracks.

I mean, I understand why he does it, and I enjoy it for what it is, but I would love to hear how his songs sound stripped to their cores, like the acoustic version of Hyperdrive that he does at guitar clinics.
