06.03.18 | Judging from the Reddit thread, people generally liked it quite a bit. I agree that it was better / more interesting than the first episode of "Alternative", but I didn't think it was THAT great. Not disappointed because I think we all knew from the get-go that this would never be anywhere near as good as the original, not because people thought these new episodes were going to be done badly, but because the original was sooo good that the new ones would be unlikely to reach that same level of quality even if they really really tried.
Anyway, I enjoyed it. First scene was amazing (mostly owing to "Thank You My Twilight"), but everything after that was a little flat, and like "Alternative" episode 1, there wasn't very much to the story in this first episode. The characterisation has also been dramatically oversimplified in comparison to the original series. But if I'm not comparing it to the original, it's fine. Just your average anime series, but worth half an hour every week. 3/5
There was a bit more Pillows music in this episode than in "Alternative" episode 1, so I was happy about that. Still mostly boring, generic instrumental background music that's NOT written/performed by the pillows (everyone thinks it's like the original series and all the music is pillows but IT'S NOT), but at least there was one remarkable use of the pillows' music that was comparable to the original series (the opening scene with "Thank You My Twilight"). Also in the episode was "Non Fiction" (instrumental in the background of the first classroom scene), "Little Busters" (the maid scene), and "Spiky Seeds" (end credits; season theme song).
btw The Pillows US tour in July is now completely sold out. However, they're supposed to be in the process of upgrading to bigger venues for the Portland and LA dates. But, whereas tickets for the new Boston and NY venues were released super quickly after the original venues sold out, there hasn't been any news on Portland and LA in a few days... |

06.07.18 | the next episode is called "Freebee Honey" and the IGN clip has the song "Freebee Honey" by The Pillows playing in the background and i'm psyched cuz this new version of the song sounds incredible
gotta say that The Pillows are a huge part of why i'll be tuning in every week. even though there's not much of their music in each episode. |

11.04.18 | didnt even bother with FLCL Alternative, mostly cuz the pillows soundtrack was already out by the time it aired.
i sorta blame Tsurumaki cuz he was like "oh you cant find anybody who thinks they can make a worthy follow up to my magnum opus? then just get people who've never heard of FLCL before". i mean, that got the show made, but it wasnt gonna make the show any good. not that anybody coulda done it justice, especially given that the animation looks like it was done on a pretty tight budget |
