They're all sister genres somewhere along the line. And a band can be any combination of all 4. As far as Pixies are concerned, I'd call them alt rock first and foremost. But I also say they fall under noise rock/noise pop. Definitely not shoegaze, but it's a related genre. |

can be considered more of a descriptor than a singular genre. noise rock comes in many many flavours. the most popular and common ones are associated with/but not at all limited to various forms of punk and occasionally alt rock (the heaviest of shoegaze albums are also often considered noise rock), and experimental and psych rock forms. while noise rock usually retains some traces of traditional song structure, it doesn't have to. also, for some reason (for better imo) noise rock is rarely associated with metal genres.
the important thing is that the distortion, abrasiveness, and use of feedback has a to be an integral part of the sound being played. |
