Paradise Lost

This band starts to lodge itself into my heart lately. They truly rock with force but have an amazing atmosphere to their music as well and this combination makes them one of a kind for me. Also their electronic phase doesn't fail to entertain as well, as many other established bands back in the 90's had a huge dip in quality over the years, which isnt true for PL as they managed to change their style drastically but did it well while somewhat staying true to their own sound. They also managed to come back to their hard hitting sound on their latest releases while a new record is only months away from its release. To celebrate its release i'll rank all their studio efforts after another excessive listening marathon over the last two days (over 160 tracks so far). Thanks goes to ignika for proof-reading this mess!

Tragic Illusion 25

Honorable Mention: technically not a real album but it feels like it. really good compilation of rarities, there are some gems!
13Paradise Lost
Lost Paradise

A Typical debut album in the sense that it has one or two enjoyable songs but with big problems that makes this their worst release. The biggest problem is the lack of variety what leads to the feeling that the whole album consists of one boring song. Not really terrible bad but nothing you would find yourself listening to many times unless you're weird.

Standout Track(!): Deadly Inner Sense (kinda)
12Paradise Lost
Believe In Nothing

Maybe an attempt to appeal to a wider audience or just out of the will to change on every release this record seems to be their most appealing to a mainstream audince. Extremely catchy and enjoyable nonetheless but nothing special.

Standout tracks: World Pretending, Illumination
11Paradise Lost
One Second

some really melancolic moments make this transitional record a hidden gem in their discog. Most of the good songs are in the first half of the album however and the second half can get pretty boring and repetitive.

Standout Tracks: One Second, Say Just Words
10Paradise Lost
Host

The peak of their "depeche mode" shipping era, however with their own unique sound as mentioned earlier.

Standout Tracks: Host, So Much is Lost
9Paradise Lost
Paradise Lost

Another really melancholic album but a little repetitive at times. This release oozes of gothic feeling.

Standout Tracks: Shine, Accept the Pain
8Paradise Lost
Symbol Of Life

I can't really tell what makes this album better than their s/t but it just is more enjoyable (female vocals for more variety).

Standout Tracks: Isolate, Erased
7Paradise Lost
Gothic

They basically defined the gothic metal sound on this follow-up. A huge step up from their debut and a mixture of their former mainly slow death metal sound but with more doom elements. A unique mixture that single handedly created a new subgenre.

Standout Tracks: Gothic, Angel Tears
6Paradise Lost
Shades of God

Maybe their most doom oriented release in the classic sense with longer songs and endtime atmosphere.

Standout Tracks: Daylight Torn, Mortals Watch The Day
5Paradise Lost
In Requiem

A true comeback release and a step up from their s/t album. All the elements of their two later hard rocking masterpieces were on this release but the riffs are less demanding and the melodies more introverted.

Standout Tracks: Sedative God, The Enemy
4Paradise Lost
Icon

More rocking and less atmospheric as Drakonian Times this is another pillar and a major reason why they were one of the biggest metal bands from the UK around the middle of the 90's.

Standout Tracks: Embers Fire, Christendom, Colossal Rains and of course fucking True Belief!
3Paradise Lost
Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us

With more melody than Tragic Idol and headbanging riffs this record created beautiful moments as well as moshpit enducing moments of pure ecstasy. Easely Nick Holmes's best vocal performance as one can hear on Last Regret for example.

Standout tracks: all again!
2Paradise Lost
Tragic Idol

Hard hitting and extremely fun dispite its melancholic nature they managed to create a late milestone in their career. One can sense a return to their more heavier beginnings and i personally love that if they manage to fuse harsher vocals with extremely melodic and exiting riffs that made up Tragic Idol and Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us.
Massive riffs from the depths of hell m/ รฒ.รณ m/

Standout tracks: all (seriously!)
1Paradise Lost
Draconian Times

This is one of the emotional masterpieces they managed to rip out their souls. To this day it holds its place as one of the pillars of heavy doom and gothic music.

Standout tracks: all, Hallowed Land, Once Solemn, Enchantment
