Avenged Sevenfold (often abbreviated to A7X) are a rock band which formed in 1999 in HuntingtonBeach,California,UnitedStates. Thebandconsists of M. Shadows (vocals), Synyster Gates (guitar), Zacky Vengeance(guitar) andJohnnyChrist (bass). The band’s drummer James“TheRev” Sullivan died in 2009, the band has since named ArinIlejay thereplacement drummer. The band has released five albums since their formation: Sounding the Seventh Trumpet (2001), Waking the Fallen(2003),Cityof Evil (2005), Avenged Sevenfold (2007) and Nightmare (2010). The band was formed in 1999. Avenged Sevenfold’s first album, Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, was recordedwhenthebandmemberswere eighteen years old. It was originally released on their first label, Good Life Recordings. AfterleadguitaristSynyster Gates (alsoknown byBrian Haner Jr.) joined the band, the introductory track 'To End The Rapture' was re- recordedwith Gates playing, and the album wasre-released on Hopeless Records. Their follow-up album, entitledWakingtheFallen, was also released on Hopeless Records andwasawarded a positive rating in Rolling Stone magazine.Shortlyafter its release,Avenged Sevenfold were signed to Warner Bros. Records. City of Evil, the third album which was released on June 7 2005, strayed from metalcore, and insteadheadedmoretowards heavymetaland adds a harder rock sound with influences ranging from various bands. During therecording ofCityofEvil, M. Shadows’ vocalstylingchanged to focus more on melodic singing rather than hardcorescreaming. Somecite thechange in vocal style as consequence of vocalchorddamage (that resulted in subsequent surgery)during a toursupportingWaking the Fallen. Shadows denies the injury as being thereason. In the All Excess DVD,producerMudrock clarifiesthis subject and affirms this is not the reason why the band changed style. Hesays "One thing I seeonthe Internet, and thatI just want to set the record straight on is, when I met the band, beforetheyrecordedWakingTheFallen, Matt handed methe CD [Sounding The Seventh Trumpet] and said “this record isscreaming, the recordwewannamake is half screamingand half singing. I don’t wanna scream anymore, but I’m going to makea record that’s halfsinging andhalfscreaming, and arecord after that is going to be only singing”. The already knew they wantedto make asinging record right by thetimeCityOf Evil came out, that was two years before it came out, that’s what thebandwanted to do as artists". The band’s name is a reference to the book of Genesis in the Bible where Cain is sentenced to live in exile for thecrimeofmurderinghisbrother. God marked him so that none would kill him on account of his sin; the man who dared to killCainwouldhave “vengeance takenuponhim sevenfold.” The title of Avenged Sevenfold’s song 'Chapter Four' referencesGenesis4:15,thechapter of the Bible in which the storyofCain and Abel takes place. The song’s subject also appears to bethisstory.'Beast andthe Harlot', yet another song derived from theBible, comes from the book of Revelation only it is writteninthe first person andrefers to the punishment of Babylon the Great, world empireandseat of false religion. AnotherBiblereference occurs in thesong 'The Wicked End'. In the song, several times it is said "dust the appleoff, savor each bite, anddeep inside you know Adamwas right", making reference to Eve eating the forbidden fruit. Although theband’stitleandmembers’ stage names makereferences to religion, Shadows stated in an interview that they are "not reallyreligious at all.Anyonethatread the lyrics andreally knew anything about us, they would know we’re not promoting either",he said. "That’s one thing aboutthisbandthat I love is that we never really shove any kind of, like, political or religious beliefsonpeople. We just, the music’s theretoentertainand maybe thought-provoking on both sides, but we don’t try to, like, reallyshove anything down anyone’s throat. There’s too manybands thatdo that nowadays, I think". The song 'Bat Country' is a reference to the book/movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The song is dedicated to theAuthorofthe book, thelate Hunter S. Thompson. Their song 'Blinded In Chains' was used in the soundtrack for the videogamesNeedforSpeed: Most WantedandArena Football. 'Bat Country' was used in the soundtracks for SSX on Tour, NHL 06andMadden06,following in the footsteps of 'ChapterFour'which had also been on the soundtrack for NHL 2004, Madden2004andNASCARThunder 2004. The song 'Beast and the Harlot' was inthesoundtrack for Burnout Revenge. All theabovegames, notcoincidentally, are produced by various divisions of Electronic Arts. 'Beast andtheHarlot' also appearsinRedOctane’sGuitarHero II, released in November 7, 2006. The song 'Burn it Down' is featured on the October24,2006releaseof the SawIIIsoundtrack. During recent tours (Spring 2006 and Ozzfest 2006 tours) Avenged Sevenfold have been performing the song'Walk',originallyby Pantera, aspart of a tribute to the late Dimebag Darrell Lance Abbott. At the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, Avenged Sevenfold received the award for best new artist. They took theawardoverseveral otherartistslike Angels & Airwaves and James Blunt. After canceling fall and winter 2006 tour dates, thebandisplanning their unnamed fourthstudioalbum. M. Shadows has stated that it will not be a City of Evil Part 2 orWakingtheFallen Part 2, because they want tochange theirsound once more. They say it will be somewhat of a surprise totheirfans. Some people are rejecting their new sounds, as someare embracingit.
