Swans are an influential American post-punk band initially active from 1982 to 1997, led by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira. The band is noted for its droning vocals and strange instrumentation. On January, 2010, Michael Gira begun working on new material for the band and it officially reformed with mostly the same line-up, excluding female vocalist Jarboe, who chose to work on her individual career. Despite the band members dismissing being or ever being a part of the metal scene, the band's broody, dark atmosphere has proven extremely influential to many extreme metal bands, and they are often seen a pioneers of several scenes, such as slow, depressing post-rock (which would later become much more popular in the hands of Godspeed You!
