Dream Theater Images And Words
Despite criticisms of wankery and emotion-devoid music, Dream Theater's "Images and Words" is full of powerful moments, capable of pushing my emotional buttons as well as getting my adrenaline pumping. While each track is a gem in itself, the final two songs "Wait for Sleep" and "Learning to Live" (with lyrics by Moore and Myung respectively) are perfect examples of where Dream Theater combine beauty and technical skill.

Arcturus The Sham Mirrors
This album is perfect... until Ilsahn appears. The final two tracks are just blurs to me - nothing from them really stands out, and aren't on the same level as the previous five tracks. From track one to five, Trickster G. Rex puts on such a show with melodies that are out of this world. The music perfectly supports his vocals and are well capable of holding my attention with their exoticness.

Closing Time was my first taste of Tom Waits, and is still the bench mark for me. Despite its date of origin, the music here sounds remarkably fresh, obviously an album capable of dating well. Sometimes I wish that I was an avid drinker, just so I can drink while listening along to Tom Waits' tales here.

Slipknot Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses
Not a strong album. Only Duality, Before I Forget, and Slipknot's willing to experiment save the album from failure. The two mentioned tracks are stunners, with strong hooks and well capable of delivering the head bang. Nothing else really fulfilled me, except for various small touches: the chilling opener in Prelude 3.0, the use of snare drums for the percussionists, the use of acoustic guitars, and the final two tracks are also a bit different. Apart from being a decent album, the record marks two things: Slipknot have dropped their trademark sound, adopting something more in line to Stone Sour and that Corey has lost his bite.

Filler, filler, filler.
I can not stand music that goes nowhere. On Gangrene, one second we have a blistering riff, then a graceful piano interlude, then strings, then etc... What does it all amount to? Nothing! Nothing but a garbled mess of music. Gah, it's so pointless... you want your music to support a theme, but Mirrorthrone won't have any of that. As a result, this is barely memorable, just snippets of music thrown together. Brutal tryhard eclecticism.
