This is definitely one of the finer prog metal releases of recent times, and certainly of this year so far too. Each song more or less sounds different to the other, and the way in which instrumental performance is co-ordinated in songs like "The Entity", "Life?" and "Rebuild the Ruins" reminds me (in a good way) of Myrath's debut album.

One thing that made made fall instantly in love with this album is its very spiritual energy flowing throughout. You can feel the amount of effort being put into the production of the album and it's simply almost too good to be true. The mixture of evocative, sometimes atmospheric black metal and beautifully integrated eastern influences feels like the perfect musical combination. To be honest, the band's harsher side reminds me of both Borknagar and Burzum, whilst the eastern influences give the band freedom to roam in their own musical world. One of 2013's best extreme metal albums? For me, definitely.

Fellwarden Wreathed in Mourncloud
A truly refreshing album. The production is ideal-seemingly shrouded in this hazy, cloudy sound but which vividly brings to mind a slow, graceful stroll alongside a foggy coastline (or alongside the lake district, apparently a direct source of songwriting inspiration for the album). It may be simplistic and straightforward in its approach, but it does everything just right and offers one of the calmest albeit seamless atmospheric black metal albums of the year so far.
Fields of the Nephilim Mourning Sun
Fields of the Nephilim Elizium
Such a hauntingly beautiful album, and it actually stays with you hours after you've stopped listening to the album itself. It's that memorable. Not just that, but McCoy's voice on here is incredible. Melodic overtones and gothic atmosphere make this one of the albums of the 90's for me.
Fish Raingods With Zippos
Its always refreshing for me to hear a Fish album, especially as he is one of my favourite solo musicians. This album has in particular so much variety its almost impossible to note every little thing that makes his music stand out so. The last six songs (contributing to a 25 minute opus called 'Plague of Ghosts') are maybe drawn out a little too long, but not enough to take away from the core values of this promising album by Fish. I sometimes wonder whether marillion or Fish is actually better.

Foscor Les Irreals Visions
Truly a fantastic album, and certainly one of 2017's finest albums. In a way it reminds me of Novembre's excellent "Ursa" record from last year, if only because of how passionate and otherworldly the listening experience feels. That said, the uplifting vocals and unique rhythm section work here have such an alluring charm, it's hard to detach yourself from the soundscape. Every song has its own little twist, but Les Irreals Visions details a transcendent style throughout which is hard for many bands to master. Hard to pick a highlight here, but I would say that "Altars", "Encenalls de Mort" and "Espectres al Cau" are some of the best examples of what Foscor do best on this album.

This album is thoroughly brilliant from start to finish. The swathes of Gothic keyboards, progressive song structures, menacing vocal delivery, beautiful guitar work, it's all tightly packed into this 50-minute package-the sound of which is right up my alley. Sure, that may sound fanboyish, but I genuinely love this album having heard it three times already. It simply gets better and better. Highlights of this album could be any song really, but for me personally it's "Letter XIX" and "An Acousmatic Guardian" (Had to look up the definition of "Acousmatic") that really effectively convey this band's best musical talents to the listener.

Genuinely thought that this was a novel when I saw the title, but later found out that it was a new album by Steven wilson. I've no idea what my expectations for this are, because every album he's ever been involved in is interesting in some way. I think he was talking about doing a new PT album too, so this year he's being a busy, busy bee. Like every year.

The Ruins Of Beverast Blood Vaults - The Blazing Gospels of Heinrich...
This is about the most blackened piece of music I've heard all year. It sometimes reminds me of early Candlemass and other times of very early MDB, but with a unique and original twist thanks to those well-orchestrated parts throughout. 'Malefica', 'A failed exorcism' and 'Ordeal' alone made me want to check these guys out more. The closer is a little underwhelming for me, but even then there's a sense of grandiosity and epic overtones.
The Ruins Of Beverast Exuvia
Had to bump this up to a 4.5 eventually. Several isolated listens of this album whilst driving (mostly during night when traffic is virtually non-existent and the absence of light grows fonder), and I have to say it's confirmed my belief that The Ruins of Beverast has become one of my favourite black metal bands. Every song on this album is different from the rest, and whilst that's not saying too much given there's only six songs here, it's still a moot point.
Therion Vovin
Thy Catafalque Meta
Well now, here's an album that practically blows every other record of 2016 out of the water. Well at least it does for me. Utterly fantastic from start to finish. Full of creativity, versatility and finesse without ever confusing or frustrating its listener. I could pick any song from here and hail it as a highlight, but I think the third track (I know, too lazy to write the song titles out) and that monstrously progressive 20-minute behemoth both take the cake. I doubt I'll hear another album with the same replay value or timeless quality as this in all honesty, but that's just my opinion.

Very solid, very consistent thrash metal album which will surely turn out to be one of 2015's stronger metal releases. No particular highlights here for me stand out because there's isn't one which is filler material. I do, however, think the album has a very fitting closer, even if a little long. Musicianship is solid, and vocals are nicely versatile, though they do at times remind me of Rob Jukes in his Exodus period.

I feel like this is what Sepultura should have sounded like post-Roots era. rOn a more serious note, what a barnstormer of a late 2018 release this is. I only found out about it a few weeks ago but damn, those Subterranean grooves are infectious and the whole hour-long piece is effectively monstrous in its delivery. I could care less for the brief deathcore flourishes here and there, but it's a generally well-written debut effort full of vigour and menace. This band is one to watch in the near future, that's for sure.

Very solid album, and particularly raises all the good points of a genre at risk of sounding outdated. The keyboards make songs such as 'At the well of the Nazareth' and 'The source' all the more exciting and evil-sounding to listen to, whereas the bass-heavy 'The transit begins' and 'Shiver' obviously favour heavy guitar sounds a la Pentagram (in the 80s), making for a rather unique sound.

A very different sound compared to what we've heard from BMTH in the not too distant past. In particular the production seems a lot more atmospheric and Sykes' vocals seem to have more of a range than usual. There are a lot of songs on here that I could say are the band's best: 'The house of wolves', 'Empire (let them sing)','Shadow Moses' and 'Crooked young', the latter of which making for a very nice sound using symphonic sounds and consequently giving off a classical feel. If this is the direction the band are heading in, I have no doubt that I will become a bigger fan than ever before.
Broken Hope Omen of Disease
Excellent album. Some very brutal and sometimes technical death metal here, though you have to try hard to find variation in some aspects of the band's sound. The vocals and drum rhythms are more or less the same all the way through, but the guitar and bass work is extremely well-executed, specifically on 'Ghastly', the title track and 'The docking dead'. I didn't realize this band were around for as long as they have been either.

This band has come on leaps and bounds since the fairly lackluster debut. Consistent songwriting, progressive musicianship, beautiful inclusion of folk instrumentation (the brilliance of that mid-section during "Death", for example) and Anna Murphy's vocal delivery is spot on. The band also kill it live, as proven by their support slot to Katatonia earlier this year.

Der Weg Einer Freiheit Stellar
Excellent album, though it took me a while to get into it. I think it's because of the first two songs, which I thought at first were a little too long for their own good, but then the rest of the album automatically impressed me and kept me hooked. With the exception of the brilliant final song, I prefer the two shorter tracks ("Einkehr" and "Verbund") to the lengthier material, but as a whole this is simply a well-written, well-performed black metal release.

Elvenking The Pagan Manifesto
The album Elvenking should have made after "The Winter Wake" in my opinion. It features everything that made the band's first three albums so unique whilst still retaining a melodic yet epic atmosphere, helped to become more relevant by intricate folk musicianship. My personal highlights are the amazing "King of the Elves" and "Twilight of Magic", though near enough every song on here is just as good in their own particular way.

I was initially introduced to Enthroned's music via "Carnage in Worlds beyond", so it's fairly unsurprising that this album is musically similar. That's not a bad thing at all however, given how aggressive and powerful the musicianship is. Not only that, but the more complex likes of "Vortex of Confusion" and "Seven Plagues, Seven Wraths" really impressed me. The vocals for me are still weak in comparison but nonetheless suitable for this musical style.

Extreme III Sides to Every Story
From start to finish, this is an undoubtedly ambitious concept album which, if not immediately successful, was for Extreme a career-defining piece of work. Split into three parts, the album explores and covers a lot of musical ground. The first part has the most in common with Extreme's earlier material (but is still very reliable given the band's hard-working musical ethic), the mid-section is experimental and proves Bettencourt is more than just a talented guitarist, and the last three songs verge on progressive rock territory. It's a big album to take in, and will require more than one listen to enhance the whole experience, but is certainly a rewarding listen by the end.
Exumer Rising from the Sea
Eye of Nix Ligeia
Prophecy Productions keep putting out unique releases this year, and Eye of Nix's latest another one. Alluring vocals and really adventurous songwriting coupled with one of the cleanest albeit vicious rhythm sections I've heard in a black metal-related release all year, and yet the album still takes a few listens to truly get your head around. In a way it reminds me of what The Third and the Mortal were doing in the mid-90s but with more menace and heaviness to boot.

Nice album. I particularly like the harshness of the vocals and the musicianship here often accompanies those vocals in the right sort of way. The mixture of blackened riffs and a southern rock tone throughout makes for an interesting sound, though at times this can wear a little thin if played on a repetitive basis. That said, the album is generally very consistent and in my opinion never quite lets up.

This is clearly an album that is supposed to be experience, not merely listened to. The whole thing is bizarre to those who have never really heard anything related to neofolk, ambient or dark traditional Nordic music, but giving it a chance may spurn you on to those styles. That said, it's a lot harder to get into than, say, Wardruna or The Moon and the Nightspirit. Several listens needed.

Sublime stuff, and yet it's also very laidback, fluent, and manages to make a gargantuan 80-minute runtime seem to fly by for all the intrinsic musicianship and progression happening here. Many songs aspire to truly great crescendos, often uplifting and warming but never in a way which overeggs the proverbial pudding, instead, the band rely on their individual talents and that well-honed songwriting to produce some damn fine post/sludge metal. One of the more unique releases of its kind this year.

Really pleasant surprise for me this was. I was already a fan of Tribulation but didn't quite catch on to what Hulten was doing in his spare time, and the result is this: A beautiful, atmospheric acoustic voyage through several different musical styles which ensures no song ever oversteps its mark. Short but definitely sweet, this is one of the more unique non-metal albums I've come across since 2020 started.

Macabre Omen Gods Of War - At War
Excellent album. These guys have done a stunning job both musically and conceptually here. Sure, it obviously draws many influences from the likes of Bathory (who doesn't in this sub-genre?), but the way in which atmospheric black metal is fused together with melancholic mood and flourishes of Pagan music simply collaborates for what is an hour of grandiose music. Any song here could be seen as a highlight, but my personal favourites would have to be "From Son to Father" and the epic two-part closer "Alexandros".
Machine Head Through the Ashes of Empires
Machine Head Unto the Locust
Madder Mortem Red In Tooth And Claw

Reminds me a lot of Cormorant but with more emphasis on melancholy, the violin work particularly providing a nice classical backdrop for the extreme metal work to flow onto. "Vocat" is a sprawling centrepiece but this album from start to finish is some of the most accessible black metal work I've heard in recent times.

I really enjoyed this. It's a real fresh sound, innovative thanks to the use of those Ukrainian folk instruments and the obvious prog metal influence, but I'm hearing subtle influences from post-rock and post-metal which really help the band in expanding their sound on this debut. One of the finest debuts of the year that's for sure.

I admit the vocals will prove divisive depending on how you like your death metal, but damn this is still invigorating stuff. There's a wide range of influences-some obvious, some not so-but to me it's a pretty fresh take on a sub-genre that has over the last few years been riddled with a severe lack of motivation. Ones to watch, and definitely one of the most thrilling extreme metal debuts of the year.

Occultation Silence in the Ancestral House
This album has a rich, prominent tone rooted deep in gothic music which continually reminds me of Candlemass' 80s era. For that reason I quite like it, and the way in which this tone is carried out consistently from start to finish makes songs like the brilliant 'The Place Behind the Sky' and slow but dramatic closing title track. The band's name may be pretty obvious as to what one would expect (Is "Occultation" even an actual word?), but they more than make up for this with the musicianship.r

Overkill The Electric Age
Overkill White Devil Armory
Owl Nights in Distortion
I was pleasantly surprised with Owl's previous release, the "Orion Fenix" EP which consisted of one experimental doom 20-minute mammoth of a track. The dreamy melodies, seamless transitions and heart-stopping voyages into psychedelic darkness of that particular song are well-rehearsed on this latest full-length, but naturally attracts more conflicting dynamics whilst still trying out new ideas. One of this year's finest and most unique doom metal releases.

"He is Here" has a beautifully aspiring chorus and "Earth Hour" is probably one of the catchiest songs the band have ever written.

This is exactly the sort of album that marks the wide divide between those who love blackgaze and those who despise it. There's a certain je ne sais quoi to this release however, which sees the enigmatic duo channel a distinctive charm aesthetic straight from the heart of bands such as Laster and An Autumn for Crippled Children, whilst at the same time representing a neat fusion of blackened energy and soaring pop melodies. Not for everyone, but to be fair, this IS blackgaze.

On the surface this is pretty simplistic stuff, but it's also a wholly solid and consistent collection of rattling death metal riffs and pulsating industrial explosions which bring to mind Samael at their best. Goes hard and then some.
Vulture (DE) Ghastly Waves & Battered Graves
So much fun. Yes, the OTT vocals and 80s-obsessed production won't be for everybody, but an album like this is surely designed for entertainment and the band are a very self-aware collective, so they know EXACTLY who's going to like this and who isn't. That said, this is a gleeful 40+ minutes of unapologetic cheese and I personally wouldn't have it any other way.
Vuur & Zijde / Impavida Vuur & Zijde / Impavida
Haunting, unique, and thoroughly entrancing as every single song on this split between two forward-thinking black metal bands compels you to listen with no outside distraction. Songs by Vuur & Zijde are mostly psychedelic, beautifully ambitious pieces of work, the masterpiece that is "Zonnestorm" providing atmospheric vocal leads to enhance the sound. The Impavida songs on the other hand are not quite as charming but certainly engulfing. The sheer menace of "Gram" provides a chaotic listening experience whereas the monumental closer "Wahn & Stille" builds to a beautiful albeit crushing crescendo. A fine split by Prophecy Productions.

Interesting mix of blackened sludge, post-metal and an altogether crusty production value. Sort of reminds me of the more melodic side of Bolzer and Black Anvil's latter day material, though the more lengthy compositions here stand out as a different aspect compared to those two bands. Perhaps not gripping enough for me to warrant a higher rating, but certainly provides music for thought.

Decent enough by tech death metal standards but I feel like some of these riffs and solos are forced in rather than flowing with the rest of the instrumentation in a natural way. It's mostly impressive musicianship that's on display here, with vocals a little too hesitant but still relevant for the most part. The first half of the album seems better written than the latter half.

Very interesting album, which is naturally controlled by epic, ambitious atmospheres and a rhythm section which very rarely becomes dull and bland. The vocals however really don't seem to match the quality of the instrumentation, and thus it sounds a little mixed at times. As on 'Sol Invictus' and 'Twelve stars and an azure down', the guitar work is beautiful and the drum/bass work flows very well indeed, but shoddy vocals which prove considerably weaker unfortunately lower the quality a bit. This is however more than made up for with the brilliance of songs such as 'Hersiarch' and excellent closer 'White goddess unveiled', both of which written from the heart and soul.

Pretty good album indeed. I think sometimes the band sound a little too similar to Talanas or Enslaved for my liking, but for the most part they are doing the job just right. Clean vocals are very effective against a constant barrage of progressive black metal structures and sometimes epic atmospheres, though the cleans can be surpassed by the intensity of the growls.

Reminds me quite a lot of 80s era Kiilling Joke (and maybe the latter era of that same band too), but in a good way and which never seems to get the point where this band are basically a copycat. There's a lot of neat little touches here and there in every song-but what particularly stood out to me was the very prominent bass work, and its solid collaboration with the sometimes gritty, sometimes melodious guitar style. To me what drags the album down a bit is how the vocals seem a little "off" at times, especially in the album opener and "Dark Life of Seduction", and "Comedown" just irritates me every time I listen to it. But this is mostly made up for by the eccentricity of songs like "Course Correction" and "Sharp Fangs, Pale Flesh".

This album gets better as it progresses-and I mean that quite literally. I mean, the first half of the album for me is simply average stuff, going through the motions as far as the band's musical capability is concerned, but then songs like "Born Twice" and "The Loss" rip through the stereo, and you're suddenly wondering where all this fight and vigour was with songs as lame as "The Sunset Curse" went. Nonetheless, that's pretty much it. If I'm being completely honest, it's the stale vocal delivery which really annoyed me and was the main reason why I couldn't quite get into the beginning of the album, but it's made up for by the excellence of "Sorcery" and "O, Inverted World". So in that respect, a fairly disjointed, inconsistent album, but one which by the end seems to be a pleasant surprise.

I like the weird, sort-of psychedelic musicianship and rough production here, they really make the songs as gritty as they are fluent. That said, I find the songwriting mostly repetitive here and wholly dependent on one singular main riff, which aren't that spectacular to begin with. Nonetheless, this album has some excellent moments, such as the notable melodic "Netherrealm" and that slightly disturbing opener "The Gifted Medium".

A very pleasant album to listen to, especially for those who love atmospheric black metal/post-rock/ambient, but the one thing which stopped from liking it any more was the fact that most of the songs never really exploded like I expected them to. That said, the highlights of the album itself are definitely in the three-part title track at the end, combining wispy atmosphere and slight psychadelic flourishes into a half-hour opus. That's essentially as ambitious as Dynfari get here.

This album really surprised me, though I didn't quite know what to expect before pressing play. For me the real problem here is how clouded everything sounds, but once you listen to the album a few times I guess you can get used to it. Musically it's pretty full on as far as the extreme metal part of the musicianship is concerned, and the background noises such as screeching violins, tinkling keyboards or orgasmic (?) female moans and wails add extra effect. I only wish the production could be a bit clearer to truly emphasize these little sounds.

Fudge Tunnel Hate Songs In E Minor
Well, it's nice to discover another band from my city (Nottingham). Listening to this debut album by Fudge Tunnel, I can see a lot of similarities to Clucth's early days and Acid Bath, but this certainly brings the grit and the riff power. I believe the album really picks up during the second half, as the first few songs didn't grab my attention as much. I like the more metallic, extreme side of songs like "Soap and Water" and "Tweezers" and that cover of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" is pretty ace. Only thing that dragged the overall quality down a bit for me was how the vocals sometimes seem a little too restrained (not as prominent as the instrumentation if I'm honest), but it's generally a really good sludgy piece of music.
Fudge Tunnel Creep Diets
Just as good as the band's debut, but I think this album has a few more hook-laden songs, namely on opener "Grey" and "Grit" amongst others. The band made an official video for "Grey", and it seems to match the gritty nature of the song quite well.

To me this is the band's best album by far, and that's probably because I think it's more concise than Gama Bomb's other albums. Just short enough to be enjoyed, and it doesn't overstay its welcome. Nothing out of the ordinary for this style of thrash either, but then that's exactly what Gama Bomb intended. Maybe.

Girlschool Demolition
Girlschool Hit And Run
All in all on par with the band's debut, though I prefer the vocal delivery of this album and the instrumental performance of Demolition. Nonetheless, there's still some really decent hard rock/metal riffage going on here, specifically in songs like the title track and "The Hunter".
Girlschool Screaming Blue Murder
By far the stand-out highlights of this album are the title track and "Hellrazor", but the album in general does seem to be a little more 'diverse'. Not so much that the band are taking a deliberate turn in the opposite musical direction, but it's somewhat easier to identify the NWOBHM-influenced songs from the punkier, rockier tunes like "Take it from Me" and "It Turns Your Head Around". I actually like the vocals here for the most part, though the nasally delivery on "Hellrazor" is pretty annoying. All in all, another solid 80s output from Girlschool.

Another great Gorgoroth album which is at least on par with the band's debut, but the only thing that bothers me is the really short runtime-the album almost feels like it's about to end when in fact it's just started. "Sorg" is nice enough to end things with, but it didn't really strike me as the sort of "album closer", more like just another song to add to the rest here. So yeah, I guess you could say it's anti-climactic, but then "Gorgoroth" and "Possessed (By Satan)" seem to make up for it.

A great, solid thrash debut done with real conviction and prowess. Reminds me at times of early Death Angel, in a good way of course. Best songs for me would be "Identity Theft" and "Category of the Dead".
Havok Time Is Up
Another very strong thrash record. Production is more audible than on the band's debut but the formula is much the same, maybe a couple of songs demonstrate more complex musicianship but the rest is no-frills thrash pretty much. Highlights: "No Amnesty" and "D.O.A.".

A simplistic, raw black metal record which somehow never fails to be consistent in its delivery. The first two songs are notably the weakest, but from that point onwards the album seems to take a more maturer songwriting ethic into consideration, even improving on the vocals and general musicianship which is certainly rife in songs like "Puhdas" and "Sodan Roihu" amongst others. Whilst it does sometimes prove a little uninspired, the album should please fans of black metal if nobody else.

This album can get a bit all over the place at times, and the vocals a little ropey, but generally it seems expansive and forward-thinking enough to carry the lengthier songs to a fine ending. That's without mentioning the often interesting and charming saxophone sections, which really come into their own whenever performed. This album is not without flaws, but also not without its charms either.

These guys should be bigger in the progressive metal realm than they actually are. Everything just...fits so nicely. Undeniably heavy albeit smooth grooves, a vocal range proving so much more versatile and eccentric than you'd expect, melodies that haunt you for minutes on end...these aspects and more make Madder Mortem's latest full-length stand out in a year of already great prog metal-related records. A few "slower" songs stopped me from rating this higher in all honesty (I'm looking at you, "Stumble On"), but generally this is Madder Mortem pulling out all the stops once again.rStop listening to Oceans of Slumber guys, seriously get on this instead.

Honestly, I thought the first two proper songs from this album were really bland, uninspired stuff. The cheesy symphonics didn't do much but annoy me even more, and the musicianship was too predictable to be called adventurous. Then somehow the band have a complete turnaround in terms of creativity and deliver one of the album's stand-out highlights, "Death is the Beginning". I think from this point on is where the band really show their strengths. At times I'm reminded of Karybdis in terms of musical technique and style, but this certainly turns out to be a very decent melodeath record. Pity that it starts in a boring way.

A very solid album with some outstanding ambitious tracks and some which are by comparison much less effective. That said my main problem with the album is how the vocals half the time feel too forceful as opposed to just seeming natural...but then I guess I should have expected that walking into a hardcore album. Nonetheless, the highlights are practically obvious for me-"In Circles" and "Depression" particularly impressed me.

A lot of promise on show here, especially in regards to the way in which melody and brutal technical musicianship is intertwined. "Lost Pages" has a wonderful ambient section and the solos throughout "Stories through the storms" and "My Cancer" are well executed. I think the main problem here is the band's lack of focus sometimes as structures becomes too clogged up with unnecessary additional dynamics or electronic interludes.

Borknagar with Trombones is the best description I can come up with. That aside, "Abandoned Peaks" is one of the most unique black metal songs I've heard in 2018. Rest of the album plods a little but is generally soothing and consistent in its delivery.

I really like the maniacal tone running throughout this album, but pretty much every song ends up being a little inconsistent, too much for me to rate it any higher. Songs like "The Hungry Omega", "Lord of Putrefaction" and "Ascension of the Blood Dragon" are great for a couple of minutes and then they seem to plod on towards the end. Then songs like "Fires of Molok" and "Faceless Queen of Bloodstained Dreams" are the flipside of this-they start out a little uninteresting, then finish on a high because of the former's beautiful outro or the latter's menacing mid-paced battery. The band do get it perfect on "Beast of Lawlessness", which for me is the stand-out highlight of the record.

This is a very powerful record as far as instrumentation is concerned, but the half-hearted vocals slightly ruin the experience for me. Nonetheless, most songs here feature a very sound transition between aggressive, more solid metal sounds to quieter albeit just as intense passages. Highlights for me would be "Ao Vori" and "Meo Drekum".

Band has obviously been listening to a lot of 80s metal for inspiration, and there's a lot of proof in each of this album's nine songs. Nothing wrong with that though because instrumentation is very solid and catchy all the way through. The vocalist for me brings the quality down a notch or two, but I think you can get past that by considering how well done the solos are in songs such as the title track and "Sign of the warrior".

Pretty good album, even if every song pretty much follows the same formula. It's essentially an album full of punchy powerful songs and soaring vocals, just like consistent power metal should be. Not sure why it's labelled here as "progressive" power metal (I myself can't see where the progressive part comes in), but it'd definitely consistent as a power metal album. A few weak tracks on here such as 'Follow', 'Ares' and 'Absence of light' disappointed me a little, but that's probably only because they're overshadowed by stronger songs such as excellent opener 'beneath a veil of crying souls' and 'Within a dream'.

Consistently powerful and punchy in its delivery, with sometimes added atmosphere to make songs such as "Hand of the Divine" all the more visceral. It's almost like the Gothenburg scene of the early 00s but with a modernized thrust up the proverbial hole.

Decent, traditional black metal with so-so vocals. The musicianship however is spot on for this sound, and the twisted nature of "Dynamic Underworld" and "A Foot in each Hell" works very well.

Very lush atmosphere, a lot of things going on here-often at the same time. I would prefer it if there were vocals on some of the tracks-particularly the first two and "Belenos"-but I guess that's just asking too much from a band who obviously focus on delivering some of the most interesting post-metal influenced they can conjure. It's just that there were moments throughout the album where I felt a good usage of vocal delivery could elevate the effectiveness of the instrumentation, so that a greater first impression would ensue. Nonetheless, there's some excellent songwriting here, and by far my favourite song of the whole album is "Viesca".

The last few songs are incredible. The middle section of the album is where all songwriting sense flies out the window and you're left with a mess of multiple ideas-interesting though they may be-which don't culminate in something engaging or at least sensible, for want of a better word. I get this will be in many end-of-year album lists, but for me, it's missing some sort of glue to hold everything together. An inconsistent 75 minutes could have been narrowed down to a monumental 45 minutes here.

I liked the first few songs, if only because of their warmth and expansive soundscapes...but then the rest of the album unfolded in the same way, and there's only so many similar versions of opener "Meadows" that I can listen to before it gets really repetitive. There are golden moments, but it's often music fit for slumber rather than wonder.

This album has a consistently warm, alluring charm to it, using nice organic, acoustic instrumentation to balance the (not so heavy) atmospheric black metal parts which wear their influences on their sleeves. That said, I feel this album has a very thin sound and for that reason feels mostly incomplete, despite the dwindling melodies offering quite an inviting sensation. It's nice to sit and hum along to whilst daydreaming, but that's pretty much it.

Ideas here are interesting but the main problem is that most of the songs are drawn out for too long. The first half of both 'Brooding Hex' and 'Illuminati' are brilliantly executed but at some point the instrumentation becomes rather stale, and though this does indeed suit the doom sub-genre rather well, there could have been a stronger emphasis on power and surprise than simple repetition. That said, 'March of the wolves' and 'Transmittal' are monolithic in atmosphere.

Honestly found this album a very mixed bag. Some songs I can't stand ("Vassalplasty", "The Odious Tides"), some I really enjoyed ("Irresistible Foe", "Controlled Burn") and others were just really strange to listen to "namely "Progeny of Pain" and "The Eagles Grasp"). I think the main flaw here is inconsistency, because some songs are really so much better than others, to the point where the actually stand out as being such. Nonetheless, it's decent for what it is but not much more. Some nice musical ideas thrown around, but by the end it leaves a little bit of underwhelming feeling, more so for those who expected this to be an excellent album.

Good, but this album is essentially a mixed bag. Some songs are instrumentally brilliant, whereas others simply get lost in themselves far too quickly and as a result have no sense of direction. The vocals are okay, sometimes even brilliant, but too often seem to take away from the focus on the musicianship. It also suffers from the fact that the vocals appear a little too low in the mix, so what you're really hearing is an unbalanced sound. That said, the songwriting here is very consistent and near enough every song manages to regain its excellent musical quality because of that. My personal favourite song would be the instrumental 'A negligible senescence', though only because it focuses on instrumentation.

It's an interesting find this. A lot of it reminds me of Pallbearer (the melodic doom parts obviously) but later on the album takes on a braver progressive style, one which utilizes the more extreme components of the band's sound and twists otherwise traditional styles into more adventurous soundscapes-not unlike what Cormorant have been doing since they formed pretty much. As Trey said before, the clean vocals probably stand out as the worst aspect here, but the musicianship is unique enough to keep things fresh and enticing at least in my opinion.

Not quite as bad as people are making out, but that doesn't change the fact that this album-and band-are over-hyped. Half of the songs are little better than a sub-par Emmure/Slipknot crossover style yet the other half are somewhat experimental and, dare I say it, unique. The dark-tinged "Take it" and "Devil don't Cry" largely eclipse the monotony of songs like "Best Nite of my Life", and closer "State of Nature" succeeds in ending the album on a relative high. A mixed album which will undoubtedly divide fanbases in the near future, but which is also sort of career-defining.

Look, I know this project features members past and present of Bal-Sagoth, but that doesn't stop me from thinking of this release as little more than a second-rate Cradle of filth. It's decent but honestly unremarkable.

Willetts has now got the Chris Reifert effect. Musically, this sophomore effort is pretty inconsistent. Some songs are such a hard slog through tried-and-tested riffs that you'll be likely wondering why the band even bothered releasing this so soon after the debut's release in the first place. When the album gets good however, as with the album's last four songs, they demonstrate a clear source of inspiration. Oh well.
Memphis May Fire This Light I Hold
Mental Cruelty Inferis

I'm going to get called hypocritical for making this point, but every single song on this album feels twice as long as they should be. Nonetheless, epic atmosphere and sinister musicianship is the order of the day, even if there's not much to get stuck into for fans of more "challenging" black metal.

Didn't really get much out of this in the end. Opener "No more Colours" and "Dirty Black" are really well-written, but the rest of the album in my opinion seems to fall flat. That's not including the fact that the vocals for the most part irritate me somewhat. The album's whole run-time is over 50 minutes, but it could easily have been more concise had the mid-section of the album (namely "Man Behind the Sun" through to "I took the Sky Away") been shortened a little.

Interesting in parts, but this album just has a 50/50 balance of good psychedelic music and boring ambient sections which frankly left me hovering over the skip button. Maybe with the band's next album they can come up with something truly unique, but the debut album is simply above average at best.
Selvans Faunalia
Sounds far removed from what this band did on the split with Downfall of Nur. With that in mind, this is pretty bizarre stuff and most of the time sounds like a cheesy, folksy version of mid-to-late 90s Cradle of Filth, with some unconvincing transitions from epic black metal riff sections to atmospheric, pagan-infiltrated musicianship. Still decent, but a bit hodge-podge too.

The second song is terrible on this album, but then both covers at the end as well as "Jag Ar din Fiende" and "Mot Aokigahara" are really good, well-written in my opinion. Overall, it's an album that fares just above average weighing the inconcistency of it all.

It's not death metal, it's not conventional, but it also seems to be missing a lot of substance as well. I tried to get into many of the songs here but there's a sheer lack of oomph charging most of these songs which, aside from the obviously unique musical ideas at work here, lets the album down quite a bit. Maybe I am missing a trick, but it certainly doesn't feel like it for now.

The Haunted The Dead Eye
I think a lot of focus on trying to attempt an overall "different" sound made this album feel like a mixed bag in the end. I mean, it's certainly promising most of the time and is as adventurous as The Haunted's previous two records, but it simply grows weary after the first few tracks have unfolded their fury. Not saying this is boring material, but it does require a few listens if you're looking to get something out of it. The only two songs which really stand out-and do so because they're excellently well-written-are "The Drowning" and "The Reflection" in my opinion. Everything else seems solid but largely unmoving.
The Haunted Versus
Perhaps more aggressive and straightforward than its predecessor, but Versus is still The Haunted going through their own motions. Solid and sometimes great as the music is here, it shares the same flaws with much of the band's discography in that the experience gets tiresome too quickly, resulting in a mixed bag of an effort once again. Songs do stand out-notably "Pieces" and "Trenches"-but they don't make up for an otherwise fairly average effort.

So, so uninspired and uninteresting. The band didn't even try this time. At least the album's book-ended by two of APHND's strongest songs (title track and "Dreams of the End") but that's not enough to raise the album out of such stagnation. Consistency? Here there be none.

Girlschool Play Dirty
This is basically Girlschool at their most average, and what the band played on those first few great albums wasn't particularly special either (just really solid and well performed), so Play Dirty as a whole simply seems like a bit of a rehash of all the band's flaws. The 80s glam influence is undeniable (particular in regards to the production), but there are some good moments here, notably 'Breaking All the Rules' and the heavier riff moments of 'Burning in the Heat'. Aside from that, this represents the band going through the motions.
Girlschool Take A Bite
The last of the 80s albums from Girlschool, which in all honesty is no better than the previous three records. Just as average, with a couple of decent, solid tunes ("Girls on Top", "Tear It Up") and the same annoying production.
Girlschool Nightmare at Maple Cross
A modest improvement over Running Wild, but like Play Dirty, still a very average album. The production is generally the one bad thing which drags this album's overall impression down for me, but there are some solid songs here-namely "Danger Sign" and "Back for More".

Iced Earth The Crucible of Man
Ill Nino Till Death, La Familia
It's average for the most part, certainly, but there are some nice moments to be found here. The solos in "Not alive in my Nightmare" and "Are we so Innocent" are pretty decent, and some songs are obviously better than others. I was expecting more of a prominent latin influence in this album (though I haven't heard any of the band's more recent work), and the monotonous metalcore style is just here to stay, it seems.

Girlschool Running Wild
It started with Play Dirty, the lack of any originality and vigour which made those first three albums so solid, but this seemed to have a full impact on Running Wild. The band at this point sounded really tired, bored with their own musical direction, and that's exactly why songs like "Do You Love Me?" (A Kiss cover but a really poor one nonetheless) and "I Want You Back", proving both lyrically and musically that the band were at a creative low. There are one or two decent tracks here-the title track and "Nowhere to Run" namely-but even they turn out to be average in the grand scheme of things. Certainly Girlschool's worst effort.
