I have an extreme bias for these guys, but nevertheless, this is a great CD. Mayhew have been kickin' around for a while now, but they never seemed to find the time to put out a decent, full length, recording. They've released a couple self-made demos and live recordings (Usually giving them away at live shows), but they didn't have anything that showed what they were fully capable of; nothing to show their range. Mayhew the Traitor are a three piece group consisting of a drummer, bassist , and guitarist/vocalist. Mayhew basically play folk rock, but their songs range from slow and sweet acoustic to something more hard-edged; played aggressively on an electric (No distortion). There's even a scream in one song:o!!! Some of the songs are only like this, and some are a little bit of both, so "Deathwish" never becomes monotonous. It's sad. It's angry. It's happy. It's charming. It can be violent on occasion, and even uplifting and epic at times. But one thing is for sure, there is at least one
(if not many) song(s) that will stay with you. They write very memorable music, indeed. I would recommend this to anyone who likes folk-rock, post-hardcore, and indie music. There may even be some metal heads out there that would like it. It's good stuff. Check it out. My, as close to unbiased as possible, rating would be at least a 4. My ultra super mega biased rating remains a 5. |
