A significant departure from the two group's previous collaboration. it gets very weird, very often, with a stronger
focus on repetitive electronic beats rather than filling the air with pure noise. the two bands come together on
here and sound nothing like their respective projects, aside from the vocals. on this collaboration, they sound like
a collective unit, which was one of the biggest criticisms of the previous LP. there is some really fun and
adventurous experimentation on here, and while it doesn't always hit the mark (the reggaeton and jungle inspired
Master's Story for example) it's an excellent album and I am looking forward to them collaborating again. favorite

This would have been even better were Brodsky on every track. The lack of a second guitar
for some of the songs leads to Ballou playing a greatest hits of the guitar parts and it
sounds "off" in a way, as it is much different than the album sound, sometimes (though this
has been the case since 2001). The record sounds amazing though, really well recorded and
mastered. Great musicians playing a perfect record. |

| While certainly a spiritual successor to Assassination, Ulver give us a different take on the genre. In my opinion, none of these songs would have fit on their previous studio effort. Flowers of Evil takes on a different tone, one that does not reach the highs of Assassination, but is a solid addition to Ulver's substantial discography. The singles are probably the strongest tracks here, but Machine Guns and Peacock Feathers, Apocalypse 1993, Hour of the Wolf, and Nostalgia are not too far behind. A Thousand Cuts is a pleasant closer, while One Last Dance is most certainly the weakest track on the album. Overall, an great-to-excellent album upon repeated listens, but one that is on the weaker end of Ulver's near-spotless list of LPs. |
