5.0 classic
Amia Venera Landscape The Long Procession
This album brings together the best in every genre: the assault of hardcore, the technicality of metalcore, and the atmosphere of post metal. A New Aurora deserves a 5 all on it's on for its beautiful melodies and build-ups.
Ben Folds Rockin' The Suburbs
Comus First Utterance
What can be said about this album that hasn't already been said? It's delightfully crazy and creepy and still seems to be ahead of the times. Musically, the album never falters, covering a lot of ground within its genre, leading to a very interesting and captivating listen whenever you spin it.
Harlots The Woman You Saw Is The Great City
I Would Set Myself On Fire For You Believes In Patterns
John Williams Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Modest Mouse The Moon & Antarctica
This is simply a classic. These tracks just take you away with their beautiful instrumentation and vocal work.
Modest Mouse Good News for People Who Love Bad News
Modest Mouse Strangers to Ourselves
Noise Trail Immersion Symbology of Shelter
Persefone Core
Making an album longer than an hour and composed of three 20 minute songs is a pretty bold move. But if you thought you'd get bored for even a moment, you are sorely mistaken. Core is Persefone's greatest effort and remains as a progressive death metal giant.
Persefone Aathma
Persefone about to show once again that it is one of the most consistent death metal acts out
there right now.
Shade Empire Omega Arcane
It's hard to combine symphonics with metal without coming off as cheesy or excessive. Somehow, Shade Empire struck the magic balance between strong black metal riffs and powerful orchestral elements. Omega Arcane is an incredible journey that twists and turns through crushing black metal songs and stunning orchestra-driving numbers. This is certainly one of (if not the) best symphonic metal albums.
Suis La Lune Quiet, Pull the Strings!
The Beatles The Beatles
I was raised hearing The Beatles just like everyone else. Although it's certainly a hard contest, I'd say The White Album is my personal favorite. It's got plenty of hits and so much wild experimentation. It's hard not to fall in love with this one.
The Beatles Abbey Road
Definitely my second favorite Beatles album. The medley at the end is a lot of fun.
The Dillinger Escape Plan Dissociation
The Hotelier Home, Like NoPlace Is There
Unexpect Fables of the Sleepless Empire
Unexpect definitely cause divisions. I firmly believe they made wonderful experimental music that explored in such a wild but awesome manner that really breaks from the crowd of typical bands. People think the music gets out of control, and I can see where they get that from. In my opinion, the band managed control over their chaos and knew when to make things crazy or beautiful. Fables is a wonderful product of unrestrained creativity and a great final effort by Unexpect.
Woods of Ypres Woods V: Grey Skies and Electric Light
Woods of Ypres have always been honest with their lyrical messages, and Woods V is no exception. True, they can be considered cheesy, but they resonate with me. I think the band did a wonderful job with this release, and it is packed with emotion and honesty. A lot of these songs are simply beautiful. I jammed this album for a long time and I still can't see it below anything else but a 5. It's just one of those personal albums that you love to death and never get tired of.
Yndi Halda Enjoy Eternal Bliss
I don't think I've ever given a 5 this fast. Godspeed, for me, drags on at a lot of points. Yndi Yalda spends every moment keeping you engaged in the music, always crashing into splendid crescendos. I was never bored through any of the songs.

Astra The Weirding
Astra certainly take their influence from the prog giants of old, but with their own sound to it. Although long, the songs are incredibly engaging and rewarding to listen to. The synth and keyboards are put to great use. The production's hazy quality adds to the atmosphere and gives the album a nice extra quality. I can jam any song from this whenever I want to and just get lost in the sound.

This is why music can just be so thrilling: you stumble upon gems that were all but completely buried in a sea of other bands. Maybe it's not as good as a 4.5, but I have been away from listening to tunes for some time, and hearing this has reminded me why I spend hours, days, sometimes weeks searching--sometimes you find something truly inspiring.

Some good ol' feelsy emo bullshit, but it's pulled off pretty darn well. Not the best in the business, yet there is an appeal within the honest delivery, restraint, and hazy production. Definitely check out the incredibly-catchy "Gray" if nothing else; the vocals on that track particularly stand out. Worthy of notice!

Imagine if Rammstein dropped industrial for gothic and incorporated more melody and symphonic elements. A very underrated release that, while not the most unique in the genre, has plenty of redeeming moments.

I really wanted to like this. However, from my viewpoint, the instruments have been tuned down to such a mellow atmosphere. The build-ups are good, but don't hit nearly as hard and do not last long enough. It's definitely a disappointment considering how hard I fanboy over Communication Lost, but it's still a solid effort and worth a listen. Not a bad album by any means, although lacking.

Murky, haze-infused emo that follows the post-hardcore-catharsis template. It's nothing exceptional honestly, but something about the heartfelt way it is presented makes up for the more simplistic compositions. There's enjoyment to discover here, although improved production and increased songwriting capabilities would be appreciated in the future. This might be a case of me over-rating because of becoming too sentimental but oh well, that happens.

Oceans of Slumber The Banished Heart
This album does a fair bit right. To make sure the listener knows this, Oceans of Slumber repeat everything good from each song. And then, in case you forgot, they repeat that as well. And then, in case you forgot, they make every song as long as possible and continue to repeat the good things from each song. And then, it gets a bit old after a while.

Perhaps my opinion on deathcore has soured over the years, because after a while this just stagnated. I mean, there's great musicianship here, but there are so many damn breakdowns tossed about with a bunch of sweeps thrown in to make them sound original.

A case of ambition outweighing the eventual result; the post-metal/hardcore elements are fairly standard, but a violin is occasionally thrown into the mix to try and evoke greater emotion. This ends up acting more like a gimmick than a natural contributing element.

Will Haven Muerte
Hard to place this one; on one hand, this is incredibly heavy and hard-hitting from start to finish. On the other hand, every song starts to blend very quickly. Will Haven perform Zao-like songs, where a central riff/guitar part dominates a track. However, where Zao explode into melodic sections and climaxes, WH seem content to stick to the heaviness. It works great sometimes (Now in the Ashes) and other times you just get bored, unfortunately.

Zygoma The Highest Court
The Highest Court is unfortunately a neutered version of The Forgotten. The chaotic mathcore riffs are all but lost on Zygoma's sophomore effort, and when they do appear they don't last nearly long enough. The album certainly has good parts, but it's lacking the elements that made the band great in the first place.

Fairly pleasant folk release. As time goes on, it becomes more and more clear this doesn't have too many unique elements to it that keep it compelling, making it drift away with little memorability attached.
Apologies, I Have None Pharmacie
Pharmacie is a much more mellow experience than previous releases. The change in style is a bit
disappointing, as the punk and hardcore elements seem all but extinct here. There are no good real
'jams', just a lot of slow burners that mesh into each other. Quite a few tracks sound awfully
similar and don't distinguish themselves well.

Sounds less like the sound established on Entity in the Void and more like a poor man's copycat of Aversion's Crown. The issue is that AC can craft memorable songs that balance out the deathcore influences, while this seems to lose any sense of memorable riffs behind a deluge of chugging. Unfortunately disappointing release.

Normally these kinds of projects don't upset me, but the sheer amount of overt copying in this record is astounding. There is also the issue of by far the most overblown vocal performance I've heard in the genre. Run far, far away.
