Black Cat Music The Only Thing We'll Ever Be Is All Alone
East Bay punk rock n' roll that combines all the drug-addled mayhem of the the whole SF punk rock scene early 90's, to the more rock n' roll bands and contemporaries like the Peechees, Richmond Sluts, Murder City Devils, The Strokes and The Pattern...a fucking brilliant down n' dirty LP!

Blueprint (USA-OH, Hip-Hop) acoustic flexi
These guys are best known for their split 7" with Jimmy Eat World, but they were a credible band in their own right, releasing several singles and a 12" EP as well. But, it is this sullen acoustic flexi that I find to the band's best work. It's a somber, meditative EP that could be construed as 'acoustic emo,' which isn;t far off, but it transcends that tag and holds its own as a fantastic unknown gem from the late 90's.

A haunting, terse emo album that takes the Drive Like Jehu sense of song structure and adds their own sense of restrained math-rock, dark post-punk and even moments of noisy and brittle atmospherics, which are wonderfully contrasted with the LP's deep melancholy and staggering moments of quiet character

one of the best post-punk LP's ever made. Rick Agnew does some amazing guitar work on this LP, and Roz is at his (unfortunate) best! The subsequent 2 LP's were solid, but this LP reigns as king in their (spotty) catalog.

Circle of Ouroborus Abrahadabra
Circle of Ouroborus Unituli
The songs are bit more linear than some of the band's other output, but, for a band that has sat comfortably
in the 'outsider,' camp for quite a few years, it's an almost edgy move to transition into slightly more
'traditional,' songwriting. That, of course, is relative to the band, as the LP still retains that amazing outsider
feel to it, with washed-out, narcotic melancholia that is somewhere between a black metal funeral march,
Velvet Cacoon's hazy tomes and an ethereal Current 93. A strong LP from a strong band! |
Circle of Ouroborus Streams
Super-duper outsider black metal from this eclectic Finnish band ....and I only use 'black metal' out of laziness, because really this is a mix of apocalyptic folk, experimental shoegaze, psychedelic noise, post-punk chanting, gothic atmospherics, trilling mid-paced black metal guitar and ominous background drones
Circle of Ouroborus The Lost Entrance of the Just
Another awesome in-the-red lo-fi LP of outsider black metal, folk, psychedelic wooze and soupy, druggy laments.
Circle of Ouroborus/Crooked Necks Ruins of Resurrection
Clair Cassis Clair Cassis
Cloud Nothings Attack on Memory
Cloud Nothings Here and Nowhere Else
Cloudkicker Beacons
Cloudkicker's bedroom-tech, post-rock, guitar-god workouts are always a welcome respite, but on 'Beacons,' Ben's mix of a poppier sounding Isis and more streamlined Pelican is met with these huge Fucking Champs style riffs that give the LP an added oomph. The Fucking Champs are almost forgotten, but if you can find their old LP's they are highly recommended!
Cloudkicker Fade
Codeine Barely Real

Common Eider, King Eider Worn
These dark, murky drones makes Grouper seem happy. It's haunting and ominous, yet strangely beautiful, with bellowing textures, low-end hums, sparse piano and layered choral murmurs.

Creeper Lagoon I Become Small And Go

Crop Duster A Strange Sort Of Prayer
I grew up in Santa Rosa, and, this was a huge album for all of us Round Robin Bar / 3rd Street Aleworks / 440 Bar drinking punk rock kids who also loved country back in 1999!
Crowbar Obedience Thru Suffering
Cultes Des Ghoules Spectres over Transylvania
Current 93 Nature Unveiled
Pour a drink and grab the headphones! This is one of the better unnerving soundscape LP's David Tibet and crew ever did, and as a debut LP (from 1984), I can only imagine what the immediate reception must have been 30 years ago.

Dale Cooper Quartet and the Dictaphones/Witxes Split
The one 20 minute Dale Cooper.. offering is an amazing under-the-influence, serpentine, Angelo Badalamenti-inflected, dark jazz-scape that's wonderfully reinforced by sultry, scraping drones, eerie film-noir ambience and mystical bar-lit shimmers...like if Tim Hecker got lost in the black lodge. Witxes is a different beast, but delivers an intriguing, terse song of fractured ambience

Dead Raven Choir My Firstborn Will Surely Be Blind
Black metal meets Jandek in a bizarre array of deranged covers from completely unrelated artists. But as with all of DRC's releases, the LP is held together by the most skeletally fractured of forlorn, almost scorched-earth-blues influenced by outsider-outsider black metal. Killer stuff!
Dead Raven Choir Cask Strength Black Metal
One of the absolute best / polarizing, outsider black metal / folk weirdos ever. This 3 LP set compiles 4 previously released EP's in all of their fucked up deranged glory!
Deafheaven Roads To Judah
Death Cab for Cutie Forbidden Love
Death Cab for Cutie Plans
Death in June The Guilty Have No Pride
Though the martial drumming and doom-laden vocals are there, this is not the apocalyptic folk band Death in June would turn into. I like their 90's and contemporary material, but this early work is brilliant! I wan't even really aware that they began as this post-punk band much more reminiscent of Joy Division and Bauhaus. Not to say this is a copycat LP, its got a distinct personality and some almost 'pop,' moments. I'm a bit bummed that I didn't listen to this years ago!
Deathspell Omega Si Monvmentvm Reqvires Circvmspice
Depeche Mode Violator
Diamanda Galas The Divine Punishment
Wow...this is dark, avant garde stuff. It sounds a bit like a minimalist Scott Walker, but this was released in 1986, before Mr. Walker really got weird. This is a mix of Diamanda's gorgeous operatic vocals, sepulchral screaming, piano laments, droning noise, otherworldly shimmers and nothing remotely resembling a pop moment. Yet, this is a terrific, harrowing listen, and an artist I am excited to explore more of!

A very catchy, dreamy, Los Angeles-cool, 80's inspired band (Chameleons, For Against, Cure) that was about 10 years too early, or they would have sold a ton of records on Captured Tracks a couple years back. | Indian Summer, along with Ordination of Aaron, Evergreen, Moss Icon and Portraits of Past were the real early 90's progenitors of emotional hardcore, and this live document showcases that original scenes white-knuckle, emotive catharsis. The sprawling, epic take on their best song, 'Angry Son' is almost unparalleled in it's jarring beauty and fury, and a song that is well worth hunting down this LP. |

The band's first foray into post-Christie Front Drive worship, and it's a pop masterpiece of sorts. The production is a bit over-the-top, but the songwriting showcases the band at their best, a level they'd never be able to recapture on a full length LP (every other LP has great songs, but also some shitty ones) as there isn't a dud on this double LP!

One of the forerunners of the post-hardcore template, the band is reminiscent of other CA bands of the time like Indian Summer, Kid Dynamo and Current, but Julia adds some unique guitar squall and personal, biting lyrical motifs that separates them from many of their esteemed contemporaries. 20 years after it's original release, this LP remains a hidden gem of the emotional hardcore genre, and punk rock in general.

allows one to contemplate the oncoming train rather than be run over by it. Every listen offers new

A stunning debut by this sparse and melancholy gothic-Americana band that fits somewhere between Nick Cave, Bonnie Prince Billy and Leonard Cohen
The Black Swans Change!
The Black Swans Don't Blame The Stars
The Black Swans make amazing Nick Cave influenced gothic Americana, but on this LP everything comes together into a more cohesive presentation that sees the band venture into more linear songwriting while still maintaining their sadder-than-thou aesthetic (with a little tongue in cheek). An extremely underrated band, if I was to recommend one LP to begin with it'd be this one (or the debut LP)

Well, at the risk of sounding narcissistic, I've been to over 1000 live shows, and, without a doubt, the Murder
City Devils were THE best band I ever saw live (San Francisco 1998 - 2003). This LP encapsulates everything
about this band that is amazing....punk rock, alcohol, pretension, swagger and garage snarl! |

Bleak even by Xiu Xiu standards. Jamie Stewart's dreary, unnerving confessionals and despair-drenched songs have been a staple of the band since day one, and, 'Angel Guts,' at first seems to inconspicuously fit nicely into the dark Xiu Xiu catalog, but, repeated listens reveal a harrowing desperation that creates an eerie, heavy, and wholly uncomfortable atmosphere. Along with, 'Knife Play,' and 'Air Force,' this is the band's best work, and also their most disheartening and beautiful!

For an album that came out in 1988 this is a stunning achievement. One can certainly hear the influence of contemporaries like Dinosaur. Jr and Twin Tone bands, but, it's the math-rock guitar cool (that would so wonderfully color the subsequent band, Seam) and emotional resonance of the LP that sets it apart. A great EP!

Blessure Grave showcase the right combo of Joy Division, Wire and Bauhaus, but, this EP is made a bit more brilliant by the song, 'Mind and Body,' which, is simply a stunning song that is closer to the late/great Chameleons than anything else...a very good EP with an unbelievably great song. |

Relatively orthodox black metal from ex Negative Plane guys. Everything basically works here, driving and austere guitar tones with terrific murky production give the LP a nice suffocating edge. It's certainly not earth-shattering, but a good black metal LP with some cool keys and some above-par musicianship.

This early 90's Santa Rosa emo band was the predecessor to Edaline and the Desert City Soundtrack. It's raw, youthful and the sadly deceased Matt Carillo provided a great heart-on-sleeve vocal style. The band's other 2 singles are solid, but if you can somehow miraculously procure a copy of their demo tape, 'Shoots the Hoops' it's certainly the bands strongest effort.

Leviathan ply their brand of deranged black metal yumminess with Wrest's foreboding atmospherics and 'devil-being-eaten-by-cats,' vocal style. A pretty rad split! |

This LP gets a rightfully dodgy reception, but the years have been kind to this gothic-tinged, folksy, apocalyptic-world-music version of the Swans, and it holds up very well 27 years after it's initial release. In some some ways it bridges the cavernous gap between 80's Swans, 90's Swans and Angels of Light, but it's still a unique LP in their catalog and one I'd recommend, especially if you've already digested other Swans work.

My obsession with the Chameleons led me to this post Chameleons Mark Burgess band, and it's still very Chameleons-heavy...which is a good thing. Bits of dark Joy Divion-esque post-punk round out the catchy gothic guitar-webs woven by this guitar driven crew. Everything Mark Burgess touches is gold. Definitely an LP worth seeking out.

Really early Finnish black metal from 1992, with members of Beherit. This is more mid-paced, dark and a harbinger of the doomy bm of bands like Katatonia that would follow. The band only released 2 MLP's, but, both are worth getting as the slower, ethereal sounds on both EP's are incredibly ahead of their time! The bonus material on the vinyl version is also worth hearing!

Classic late 80's Sub Pop proto-punk from this underrated Australian band. This 1989 looks back to the Stooges as it also looks forward to the whole Nirvana / Mudhoney eruption a few years later. Pretty much all early Sub Pop LP's are worth hearing if not owning, and this is no exception.

I really want to like this more than I do because I love Current 93 in all of their multifarious musical forms, but while this LP of darkly lit aural collages shows fragments of Tibet's genius-to-come, it also feels slightly disjointed. By no means a poor LP, and a nice stepping-stone record, but not up there with the band's best work.

Striborg Nefaria/A Tragic Journey Towards...
Striborg Southwest Passage
A pretty good Striborg release. Nicely done sloppy, mid tempo, noisy, disheveled Tasmanian black metal from this prolific one man band. This LP is a bit more disheveled then others, maybe not as blurry and drowned in static as some previous releases as it's a much messier affair then the last couple of LP's, which, is by no means a bad thing.
