Drudkh Shadow Play
I think this is my favourite Drudkh album now. It feels like the culmination of everything that has come before, issued
forth under trying and emotional circumstances, yet capturing their folk-y atmospheric black metal style like never
before. Shadow Play features some of the tightest playing, most organic production, and deftly enveloping melodies of
their career - a completely immersive experience.

Really good, gloomy dungeon synth. I get a sense of dark mountains, mist filled forests, and cloudy skies. The
more open production I think lends itself to images of nature rather than the inside of claustrophobic buildings. Of
course the album art influenced that feeling more than a little bit, but it's definitely a reflection of the sound.
Anyway, really enjoy this, and it comes with a neat fridge magnet too so what can I say?

Possibly my favorite version of this album, all the tracks sound absolutely phenomenal here. For a live album it's incredibly well balanced and recorded, and as much as I enjoy the original, it's a classic black metal album after all, I think this slightly rougher and more organic sound does wonders for the material.

Not sure know how to characterize this album, but I know I really like it. I would describe it as spacious and
improvised-sounding desert-rock, with a middle-eastern influence, incorporating something of the then-
burgeoning Berliner Schule electronic scene, and all of it somehow ends up channeling the atmosphere of an
Arabian desert. I suppose the ill-defined label of Krautrock is apt enough, but that tells you very little, really it just
needs to be experienced to be understood at all - not because it is complex or exceedingly strange, just because
this one is hard to pin down.

This band has done it again! I was really impressed by last year's album and when I heard there would be something out this year too I jumped on it. Took a bit longer than the previous one to hit me properly but once it did I was hooked. The production on this thing is really cool too, gives it this kind of buzz to the riffs, and a really desolate atmosphere to their brand of death-y black metal. Not your typical "blackened death metal" though, this is like all the things you love about BM paired with a more throaty vocal performance and punchier, more distinct instrumentation. Basically it rules.

Eluveitie Ànv
Wow, this album exceeded my modest expectations and delivers some of Eluveities strongest material in a decade. All of
the singles were great, but Premonitions early stood out as a clear winner, and remains a high-point here with its
ripping solo and professional display of Eluveities tested formula. Elsewhere, Fabiennes vocal talent is taken full
advantage of, as she features prominently throughout the runtime. Chrigels growl, though never far away, plays more of
a supporting role. Id have to tentatively assert that the band has found their most organic and natural balance between
the folk-y compositional side, and their gravelly metallic underpinnings. At a breezy 40 minutes, Anv is also a digestible
and approachable package, with interludes that are exciting and interesting, particularly the likes of Memories of
Innocence, rather than serving any filler-function or adding to the fatigue of a padded run-time. Eluveitie basically feel
as strong as ever, and I for one am happy to see what appears to be the most earnest and dedicated folk-metal act
continue to succeed.

A strong showing of aggressive black metal with clear and compelling motivation. Its single-mindedness comes at the price of much latitude in creativity, meaning this release does little to stand out from the pack of similar-sounding projects. That said, its executed about as well as a straightforward kick to the face can be. 3.7/5.

This live DVD is a lot of fun. Before watching it I was a little apprehensive about the editing style from the "trailer", but I actually really enjoyed the post-production meddling. Aside from some seldom moments of quick cuts that I'm not that into, the CGI was unexpectedly really cool, the track title graphics and stylistic additions enhanced the experience, and overall the camera angle choice was excellent. Plenty of live DVD try to make the experience as unwatchable as possible by choosing zany angles and machine-gun cuts but this was one of the most enjoyable live albums to watch and listen to. The track list was excellent, the band are on point the whole time and never let up with the on-stage excitement. Loved the venue and way it was used too, not only for the expectedly awesome pyro-technics but also the additional antics. Highly recommend for any fan of the band, I think this tops In Amerika too.

Thrash metal in the vein of early (Schizophrenia years) Sepultura. Primitive sounding but still tight, this album recalls the younger years of thrash metal and holds onto the main ethos of the genre, never sounding too polished or derivitive despite it's modernity.

I am always happy to hear another BOC album, and though I honestly would have preferred to hear a modern
follow-up to 2020s fantastic The Symbol Remains, this is an interesting time-capsule with a few genuine
highlights. Since this is just a collection of unreleased material from their middle period, Ghost Stories ends up
sounding like the missing link between Mirrors and Cultosaurus Erectus, and probably stacks up slightly better
than the former. The cover songs scattered throughout are live show staples and vary in quality. Kick Out The
Jams sounds pretty good, but We Gotta Get Out Of This Place and If I Fell, though fairly inoffensive, are probably
the least interesting tracks here. On the other hand, So Supernatural, Don’t Come Running To Me, and The Only
Thing are quite excellent, and everything else is pretty good. This is far from essential listening, but I think fans of
the band generally will be quite satisfied even with what the band left on the cutting room floor, and pleasantly
surprised to get a classic sounding BOC album in 2024.

Wanted to like this more than I did. Still a great effort and a fair amount of cool riffs/lead but nowhere near the quality of Halo. More focus on a deeper, crunchier sound doesn't lend itself to COB, who are way better off with the trebly riff fest. Bass is nice and strong here though, and vocals + percussion are done pretty well too.

I think I prefer the material here to the debut, mostly for this demo's inferior recording quality which lends the tracks a good deal of charm and also better represents the music, at least in my view. The live bonus tracks are pretty garbage though, I'm not counting them in my rating but be forewarned they're pretty flat and sound aimless, maybe as a result of how they were captured, plus they take up a lot of the overall runtime and draw the whole expereience out. The demo itself is very good, just avoid the live numbers and you'll enjoy yourself.

A bit chaotic stylistically, but it works. The tracks on this little EP are continuously moving from a heavy nu-metal

Heivok does a great job of re-creating select ambient pieces from Burzum's history here. Midnight of Winter Freeze
An intriguing winter synth experience that requires a little more volume than usual to properly shine. Freeze creates a subtle atmosphere with a slightly haunting feeling, built on a foundation of swishy synths and dull percussion. The album cover is a perfect representation of the isolating music within, which is neither threatening nor comforting. My one suggestion if you choose to give this a listen is to crank it up a little given the low mixing present, my first few tries left me wanting, and even though I kept returning it took some time before I figured out that the sound just needed some more power, then you start to notice some of the details that are obscured. There are more complete and enveloping winter synth albums out there but for a taste you can't go wrong with Freeze.

The first track is absolutely awesome. The long, main track is really good too but dies down a little bit in the middle section. Ndra are just a really impressive band all round and they certianly have a unique approach to black metal with their cutting high-pitch tremolos amongst a more restrained, dark atmosphere of drum clanging and anguished screams.

A genuinely excellent hard/stoner rock album from Eddi Pickard of Infant Annihilator and Black Tongue fame. Seeing what he's capable of from a technical standpoint in IA, it's hard to believe how well he can tone it down here and offer such a melody-driven and catchy experience. Not only are his guitar playing and songwriting skills rmade immediately evident, but Eddi's got a really good voice for this style. The album's a little on the long side and could lose a track or two, but I'm equal parts pleasantly surprised and excited by how great this turned out.

An uneven and not wholly satisfying work, with a handful of excellent tracks exemplifying an original and compelling take on NDH, but which are dragged down by as much lacklustre filler, not to mention awkward choices, that fail to make an impression. This feels like an immature work, in the sense that these guys show a lot of potential, but seemingly lack the experience or know-how to truly pull off their ambitious goals and craft a cohesive album.

Interesting style of black metal, unique sound and production. Some of the riffs are really cool and the
songwriting overall is a fresh (for the time) take on black metal. It suffers a bit from sounding homogenous,
production wise anyway, but on the whole it's quite enjoyable mid to relatively slow paced BM.

The Sombre Chemin tracks are mostly forgettable, without the band name attached they'd be more easily dismissed. Just quite low quality bm, nothing special going on besides some cool bass work. The intro track on their side is a brooding synth piece which is also pretty straightforward and nothing to get excited about. The Peste Noire side on the other hand is actually pretty great, with some really cool songwriting hidden amongst the lo-fi aesthetic. They steal the show quite easily. Hardly a necessary split, but it's worth a gander.

Pretty "meh" release overall, saved by some great ambient moments. The dungeons synth/atmospheric material on this album is well done, but the super echoey, delay-drenched black metal stuff just isn't my style at all and imo is not handled or performed very well. On the fence with how I feel about it overall, sitting around a 2.7 but the parts I do enjoy are pretty great. Album is too long and too ambitious for what it actually delivers, the forced, repetitive BM just isn't enjoyable and ruins what could've been a really cool ambient/ds project.

I quite liked Stellary Wisdom, even that release garnered a pretty mixed reception. To me it brought back Mortiis' amateur-sounding flow between motifs and so I didn't mind it being stilted. This release leans more towards dark ambient, which I would be okay with because I enjoy that style and I don't mind a switch, but this release just feels kinda thrown together and not very interesting. Perhaps the latter tracks will grow on me but I'm really not a fan of the opener.

Ehhh, it's kinda 'nice' sounding, but it's completley missing anything interesting or important. The entire EP
maintains a continuous atmosphere of subdued sorrow, and meanders on with little electronic flourishes, solemn
vocal lines and subtle piano. It's just missing some much needed variety, the actual material isn't strong enough
to keep up 18 minutes of essentially the same thing over and over.

Burzum The Land of Thule
Seems more than fair to rate this now, given Varg stated publicly on his X account that he is no longer continuing the
project and is focusing his attention on writing instead, also reflected on his website that the dates of this drip-feeding
terminated around the middle of 2024, and nothing has been touched since then. This is easily the worst Burzum album:
an overlong, amateurish, poorly mixed string of sub-par tracks that were pumped out fairly quickly and eaten up by
Varg sycophants, a release clearly made with little effort or enthusiasm. It is difficult to consider this much more than an
attention-grab, perhaps also a slightly desperate revenue stream given his situation, and the revival of the black metal
style from a man apparently hostile to the whole idea these days seems odd otherwise. Even the ambient material is
underwhelming and bland. Bit of a shame, because I think Varg continues to possess a lot of creativity, and I have
enjoyed everything prior to The Land of Thule, but whether from cynicism, impatience, or disinterest, that spark of
energy is certainly absent here

Utter trash. Two short "black metal" tracks, two long "ambient tracks". The quotes are there because the tracks offered up here are examples of some of the laziest songwriting I've ever witnessed. Awful, grating guitars try to force their aimless noise to resemble a riff, but instead they sound like shopping carts rollinf around in a sewage pipe. The vocals are horrendous, sounds like the guy is dying and I kinda hope that's the case. Garbage. As for the 2 attempts at ambient. Hahahaha. Inflating the run time of terrible EPs with even worse/more boring, totally aimless voids where occasionally some electronically induced note will fly overhead is the worst trend in modern music. Not everyone can write ambient music, but that doesn't stop every moron with a keyboard from trying to bulk up their boneless EP with 10 minutes of silence, whispers, and dissonant intervals. Avoid.
Unleashing My Demons Tran(ce)scen(e)dance
Clean vocals are abysmal; the absolute worst singing performance I've heard. The harsh vocals are passable,,it seems there are two people doing harsh vocals and while one is pretty thin the deeper one is better, but in both cases they're badly placed and performed randomly, and most of the time they barely fit the music. Instrumentally the album is also terrible, there are a few cool moments here and there but the rest is utterly horrible, full of poorly executed breakdowns, mindless chugging with bad tone and stupidly placed electronic effects. Piano is used on a few tracks but it goes in a different direction to the other instruments and fails to mesh properly. The drumming is pretty good and as I previously mentioned there are a few ideas that manage to work but the rest is horrendous.
