ah youthful exuberance the album and still as good as when i first heard it. if you're looking for a fun and chaotic midwest emo album with a punk ethos this is what you need. math rock, post-hardcore, midwest emo, punk and a little experimentation put into a blender for a delicious emo smoothie. great blend of mathy noodling, quiet loud builds, passionate screams and off-kilter singing. drumming on this is also a surprising standout for the genre with speed and constant cymbal crashing blending with the noodley riffs to create controlled chaos. tim kinsella has always been the unheralded brother but he delivers a textbook charming off-key emo vocal performance, his unhinged screams at the end of "little league" are of course the standout.
the fastness and looseness of this along with the almost nonsensical lyrics at points make for something truly special. not sloppy as it is calculated but it has that feel that can only be created by inexperience. the kinsellas, davey von bohlen and victor villarreal were all in great projects after but this might be the one might just be their best collective effort by just being plain fun and capturing that magic lightning in a bottle energy which could only be had in 1995 in the not yet over-saturated emo scene.

this is not a big step down from diabolical fullmoon mysticism or pure holocaust at all. maybe it is a touch less memorable in the riff department but it still delivers relentless pure black metal experience. this album's strength is definitely the speed it is played at, pure holocaust is fast but this aims to go even faster. some say that abbath's drumming is sloppy and a touch off but i don't even care when you are constantly blasting at the nonstop pace he is on this. abbath is even more croaky and goblin-like here which perfectly compliments the frostbitten atmosphere.
the thicker wall of sound production actually adds to the album with the drums being very high in the mix, higher than the guitars even and create a unique noisiness when combined with the as always varied fun riffage from demonaz that is albeit a touch muddled compared to pure holocaust. the closer "blashyrkh- mighty ravendark" slows down to mid-tempo for the albums first real breather which ends with a clean melodic fade out that seemingly culminates with some eerie synth work before guitars come screeching in again. an unexpected way to end an album that never stopped the pace it was going at. it is one note in what it's trying to do by cranking the speed to 11 and not letting up but still delivers great riffs and is executed just about as well as you can do it. long live immortal.

solid fun beatdown junz with heavy ass breakdowns that really pop with a nice crunchy guitar tone but very predictable and formulaic besides the great melodic atmospheric closer. it thankfully doesn't overstay it's welcome though. also some more vocal variety like the gutturals at the end of "moss covers all" or hooks like on "the calm that keeps you awake" would've added a lot. a good time but nowhere near aoty material. play at the gym for all your gainz.
edit- this ended up growing on me a bit after a few more jams and going back and listening to "a tear in the fabric of life". this is definitely a bit more varied, a touch more intricate with melodic dissonance breaking up the chugs and has a stronger groove to it which i appreciate. "piece by piece" and almost nu-metal esque "the calm that keeps you awake" stand out on more listens with great breakdown callouts and groovy riffs. the thing that stands out to me on some more listens is how well the album flows as a complete work, i end up getting sucked in and listening to more than i intended. much more memorable than i gave it credit for as i keep coming back for more.

| a very solid proggy, melodic black metal album. reminds me of ne obliviscaris, xanthochroid and a bit of alcest. there are some truly gorgeous clean portions on here especially on "sun and moon" the most alcest inspired cut. melodies are a big focus borrowing from melodic dm and the heavy sections focused on that are great. i think there are a bit too many clean sections as opposed to heavy and feel like cleans are used too frequently as well. ended up a bit samey towards the end of a pretty long album. still though, a solid interesting blend of melodic dm, prog and bm that's worth a jam. |

instrumentally this album is really great top shelf math rock, the free flowing noodley licks are catchy as well as technically impressive. with the use of trumpet as well it will of course invoke comparisons to american football but a lot of this album is much more up tempo with much more poppy sensibilities. jazzy drumming compliments the mathy riffs perfectly and the driving basslines are standout. just imagine if american football rocked out a bit more. it's all great stuff when one of the two singers is doing vocals.
sadly the main vocalist for me brings this down quite a bit. he delivers an incredibly low key vocal performance that borderlines on talking with very little range in a lower register. this really doesn't mix well with instrumentals that are crying out for something a bit more genre typical. luckily the other singer on the album takes over for three songs with a much more complimentary whiny high pitched tone, these also happen to be the best songs on the album. a rare case where an instrumental version of this would be preferable. still the highlights are close to best of the genre high and instrumentally it's pretty impeccable, so give this one a listen if you like midwest emo or math rock.

i don't think i'll ever understand the massive hype this band gets but this is a totally solid fun ep. i found this to be even more one note than "you won't go before you're supposed to" and made me appreciate that album a touch more. crushingly heavy but not a whole lot of substance or intricacies to draw you in further. they know how to write a breakdown that hammers hard but they are quite predictable in where they are placed and lack memorability as there are so many of them. the band tries to mix it up with some atmospheric attempts like at the end of "forced to stay" and "permanent" but really just feel like padding and breathers after the beatdown. you throw this on, enjoy it and it mostly leaves your memory outside of a callout or two.
bryan garris's unique high pitched strained screams have really grown on me though and his unorthodox sound contrasts well with the downtuned pummeling guitar tone. a solid little experience that i won't mind revisiting from time to time when i'm feeling a tad peeved!

really solid piece of midwest emo with a bit of a post-hardcore edge from germany. fast and loose instrumentation with a kind of a post-punk jangle to the melodies at points. some juicy basslines on here as well. really solid passionate sing shouty vocals. a bit samey but it's worth a listen.

combining vampires and black metal? now that's good stuff. very enjoyable black metal with heavy use of dungeon synth, keyboards and church organs to add to the melancholic atmosphere. soaring synths really work well with the driving second wave norwegian black metal inspired riffs. the band really nails that icy, fuzzy and thin guitar tone that was a staple of that era and combines it with the synths and keyboards to make something pretty interesting. strong touches of melody as well without going too far. this creates something very upbeat and almost uplifting feeling which is quite unique. it is pretty damn catchy. vocally one pitch but really solid and powerful screams. imagine if second wave black metal never stopped and kept evolving, that's kind of what i see this as.
the only complaint really is that it gets predictable with the track listing being almost entirely a switch off between two minute dungeon synth interludes and then a 6-7 minute song. however, it does flow nicely but loses steam towards the end. definitely worth a listen for black metal fans of all kinds.

have you ever wanted botch mixed with alternative metal, mosh parts and beefy production with a dash of nu metal? i didn't really either to be honest but this is pretty fun! the first half is all songs under two and half minutes that flow together into a giant beatdown, it's good but nothing too special or standout save for the occasional clean vocals to break up the monotony. the songwriting just isn't there for me, it's mostly a collection of breakdowns and mathy riffs strung together.
the second half is where the band really shines. the songs are all longer save for an interlude and show the band knows how to write a memorable song. "doomtech" being the clear standout showcasing the bands genre mixing abilities with the melodic clean sung sections combining with the pummeling riffs and dissonance to create something excellent. the ending lyrical repetition of singing to death and screaming how'd it get like this is infectiously catchy. "end eternal" features a great bouncy nu metal styled riff slapped with some chaotic dissonance and has another standout use of lyrical repetition towards the end. the title track "errorzone" is another highlight starting with chuggy mathcore but seamlessly drifts into a melodic section with crooning that sounds very much like deftones worship done well. i definitely prefer this section but this album is just a fun blend of genres with a bit of variet and it will be interesting to watch the band in the future because they can go many different directions.

not bad at all. ok the farting horns on the title track are pretty bad and the 10 minute three note piano song never ends. there is a ton of repetition as common with varg's work but it does work at creating an atmosphere especially on "moti ragnarokum" which has a nice soaring build. the cheapness to the synths are a hindrance but also are pretty charming in an odd way. definitely gives runescape vibes especially on "i heimr heljar" which depending on you is a good or bad thing. perfectly good background listening for whatever honestly. this album re-recorded with top notch equipment would probably be really great but as is an interesting experiment given the circumstances it was made under.

| like botch meets kiss it goodbye but not as good as that description may lead you to believe. some cool heavy sludgy riffs and moments but very repetitive especially since the vocals drop out a lot. the more straightforward mathcore moments go hard af though especially on the opener and closer. worth a jam though, noisy stuff isn't my jam so mileage may very. |

i'm not usually a big criticizer of production, i don't really have an ear for the finer details of it. i just know it when i hear it and this album is really let down by it's production. battles in the north had drums forefront and loud as hell which was an interesting mix but it feels like they over-corrected here, they are buried in the mix with no pop at all. guitars sound muddy with little clarity to the riffs and even sound like they are clipping at times like a bad cassette rip.
it's a shame because the songwriting and riffs are still as solid as ever. the riffs by demonaz are much more death metal inspired this time around and more technical as well. the standout songs are loaded in the second half with the pure riff fury aggression on "battlefields" and career highlight "mountains of might" which slows down the pace with a beautiful synthesized intro leading into excellent melodies and a wonderful solo in the middle. "frostdemonstorm" is a solid closer that sounds like it could've been on battles in the north or even pure holocaust. blizzard beasts is good album that's certainly worth a listen but in need of retouching because the ideas, riffs and performances are all there.

going back to a bands first material after being introduced by their new stuff is interesting. definitely cool to see how knocked loose evolved and you can see that right from this ep. simple, heavy as hell beatdown with bouncy grooves that are reminiscent of early the acacia strain especially on "manipulator ii". bryan garris hadn't yet developed his unique bark yet and delivers a more typical solid hardcore scream which although not bad is less preferable to what he is doing now oddly enough.
thick downtuned guitars deliver the groove and breakdowns that hit hard. it's only 12 minutes and about as straight to the point as this style of music can get with mostly chugs and juns filling that runtime. "all my friends" is a great closer that starts a bit more riff focused but ends on a great long extended breakdown. a pretty fun time to put on but nothing special or memorable and definitely shows the potential they had.

really interesting midwest emo album with lots of experimentation, almost free flowing at points. vocals a little rough and inconsistent throughout. doesn't fully come together for me as a full experience but i respect it. if you want something different and out there for the genre listen to this.

this is one of those albums that i wish i liked more. all of the ingredients are there for something great but sadly it doesn't fully come together for me. the main issue for me is the crooning deftones-esque alternative metal clean vocals that were in vogue at the time which are present in almost every song. "voila" being the worst offender with cries of murderrrrrrrrrr becoming incredibly grating. tim williams has a really impressive raw, throat shredding scream that perfectly fits with the hardcore parts but the singing just doesn't work. it's not that it is poorly performed, i just don't think it fits with the hard hitting grooves.
i find myself alternate between nodding to the great grooves and then shaking it to the melodic singing. musically it is pretty simple but the mosh sections and breakdowns deliver what they should for an album of this style. plenty of memorable lyrics and lines that will get stuck in your head such as CRUMBLE CRUMBLE LEVEL LEVEL from "ways to destroy one's ambition". there are also sections that repeat the first few words in line with different endings that are incredibly catchy especially on "zone zero". an album that's certainly worth a listen and maybe the mix of genres will come together more for you than it did for me.
