JohnnyoftheWell
07.13.23 | Considered also:
Rush - The Garden (too sappy)
The Weakerthans - Utilities (too sappy, band too clearly past their peak)
The Dillinger Escape Plan - Dissociation ([3])
Supercar - Time (more of a wind-down than a final statement, but Last Scene would have made the list)
Oceansize - Superimposter (more of an odd coda than an iconic final moment)
Unwound - Who Cares (same as above)
Women - Eyesore (see 6, also not that good)
what are we missing |

07.13.23 | "yeah unwounds final track is actually below the salt for all intents and purposes"
this is true, but also Who Cares is a little too fleshed out to write off for its sake (à la Yer Majesty)

07.13.23 | does Riders on the Storm count? I never listen to the post-Morrison Doors albums |
JohnnyoftheWell
07.13.23 | unfortunately not, but it would have made the list for sure if they'd broken up after LA Woman |

07.13.23 | Frank Zappa - G-spot Tornado (the yellow shark), basically classical FZ peak.

07.13.23 | If I were to throw my hat in the ring:
What If from Aaliyah’s self titled
Threads from Portishead’s Third
Hi Baku Shyo (Suffer Bomb Disease) from This Heat’s Deceit
Title track from SDRE’s Rising Tide |
JohnnyoftheWell
07.13.23 | Portishead aren't a dead band, so Threads doesn't count. This Heat could maybe get a look in though hmm |
SomeCallMeTim
07.13.23 | boi @tvc don't imply that Portishead are done makin music (even tho who knows if they'll do another LP at this point)
Nick Drake - From The Morning |

JohnnyoftheWell
07.13.23 | Lemme rejam Giant Swan, considered and passed it up bc the album leaves me cold but |
Demon of the Fall
07.13.23 | Nah, Portishead aren’t technically defunct, they’re just off doing other things and aren’t putting ANY pressure on themselves to ever release anything else (fair enough but frustrating for fans, obviously)
I’m not getting my hopes up |
onionbubs
07.13.23 | i am a pretty big fan of both:
poison the well - without you and one other i am nothing
r.e.m. - blue (their last album was pretty weak for them but this song is pretty emblematic of what their values and intent were as a band and is as perfectly fitting a song to close their specific discog as it gets)
poison the well are about as dead as thursday in the sense that they are both back and doing reunion shows lol but i think the chances of new music for both are about the same (if not more in thursdays favor) |
JohnnyoftheWell
07.13.23 | is D10 D11 a bonus track? |

maybe
Purple Mountains - Maybe I'm the Only One For Me

07.13.23 | @Tim
ya, kind of tongue-in-cheek. he did say the whole experience did ruin his relationship with making music though |
Icebloom
07.13.23 | Cool list idea. I'd maybe add Frightened Rabbit - Die Like a Rich Boy (RIP Scott). 'Iconic' feels a bit unfitting though, since it wasn't meant as a statement or something and they didn't have the intention to disband.
Other ones I thought of but rejected for various reasons:
Bark Psychosis - Rose
LCD Soundsystem (if they had not reunited)
Damien Rice - Long Long Way |
Havey
07.13.23 | beefheart - skeleton makes good
john fahey - untitled with rain |

07.13.23 | Lovely lovely list idea I'm certainly calling:
Indigo Jam Unit - Memories
Supercar - Time
Mazzy Star - Lay Myself Down |

07.13.23 | Hum- Shapeshifter (RIP Bryan)
Mewithoutyou- Break on Through Pt.2
Daft Punk- Contact
Slowdive- Falling Ashes |
Shemson
07.13.23 | Emperor’s final recorded seconds in the studio are ‘Lay thorns on my grave’ as Prometheus comes to an abrupt close… perfect ending for them |
Dylan620
07.13.23 | Slowdive just released a new single only 3 weeks ago; I wouldn't count them out
Elliott Smith - "A Distorted Reality Is Now a Necessity to Be Free"
Morbus Chron - "Terminus" |
Trifolium
07.13.23 | Shemson yeeeeeessssssss, thought about Emperor too. Perfect ending indeed. |
JohnnyoftheWell
07.13.23 | added some more from those I know
Argument, Impersonating Martin Rev, Hi Baku Shyo and Break on Through Pt.2 are codas and underwhelming as "closers", gonna give Hum some more time but definitely add Shapeshifter if they do call it a day, did not know Bark Psychosis or Mazzy were officially done |
Storm In A Teacup
07.13.23 | Can't believe you allowed a young machetes track. |
MiloRuggles
07.13.23 | Just popping in to give Threshold of Transformation an official MiloRuggles seal of approval. Please take a moment to direct your chi in its direction, maybe strum one out idk. I'm trying to manifest a small postcard to appear in Turner's mailbox. |

07.14.23 | thought this was about Final the JKB project lol |
ashcrash9
07.14.23 | The Chariot - Cheek.
Weatherbox - Love Me a Good Microcosm
Jeff Buckley - Dream Brother
Barrow - God's In His Heaven All Is Well (iirc they released one song on a split after this but that shouldn't really count imo)
and
sgt. - きみは夢をみている夢がきみをみている
all spring to mind for me as memorable final bows |
JohnnyoftheWell
07.14.23 | always saw Cheek. as a sizeable cop-out; sample would have been cool in almost any other concept but scans as an unnecessary crutch as an end of career statement (esp considering how well the rest of the record speaks for itself). one proper full-band coda at the end of the track would have been enough to see it off, but alas
Dream Brother also sketchy considering that it's a one-alb discog and that Forget Her actually works better as a closer (love it as a track though) |

07.14.23 | "Wouldn't really say anything here is "iconic". Someone needs to look up what the word means lol"
Okay, ummmm... here goes (Google - Oxford Languages):
"Iconic:
adjective
1.
relating to or of the nature of an icon; regarded as a representative symbol or as worthy of veneration."
So, from that, in this context I'm taking this to mean: A worthy end to an album, that not only closes the session but also acts as a final statement as a band, encompassing all that made them great and worthy of the adulation to begin with.
All good as far as I see. |
Shemson
07.14.23 | This Godless Endeavour was miles better but The Obsidian Conspiracy wasn’t a bad way for Nevermore to go out

JohnnyoftheWell
07.14.23 | "but abbey road isnt the last beatles album"
it was the last album they made therefore it is the last one
half those songs came out of the let it be sessions; that album was an awkward stepping stone back into the full-band dynamic that saw off abbey road. it is the correct sequence do not get it mixed |
