PotsyTater
05.12.23 | Haven’t fought yet. Collected my 3 power ups and logged off for the night |
PotsyTater
05.12.23 | Did you try yeeting yourself |
Colton
05.12.23 | there was nowhere to yeet myself without dying. I got there by riding a mine cart under it and then using ascend. then killed the boss and had to jump down onto the tiny mine cart tracks and walk back down them. not sure how other people did it. possible that you’re not meant to go there without the paraglider |
Colton
05.12.23 | just now finishing the tutorial island I’ve been here like 4 hours lol |
PotsyTater
05.12.23 | Ohhh he’s in the mine cart area? I’ll have to go investigate. I definitely want to “clear” this starting area more or less before moving on |
Colton
05.12.23 | he's on a big round platform, you can see him from the shrine up high where you get ascend. there's tracks connecting a lot of the different areas |
heyadam
05.12.23 | lmao so I was at Target and there was one Link amiibo left and I copped it, and on the back it had a blacked out outline of a glider with a question mark on it and it said “useful items to aid you.” If gliders are amiibo locked that would be kinda funny |
PotsyTater
05.12.23 | Oh yeah there are tracks in multiple areas, I just didn’t realize what they were til I got to the dirt area with like 3 of them because I went the worst possible route to do the shrines, getting the noclip power up first and the ultrahand last lol |
PotsyTater
05.12.23 | Now I gotta circle all the way back and collect all the shit I couldn’t get without the weapon fusion and ultrahand power ups |
heyadam
05.12.23 | I explored the cold area first completely until I hit the literal unclimbable wall and realized I probably needed a rune |
PotsyTater
05.12.23 | How do you do the two koroks with buddies? Do you just have to build transportation for them? |
heyadam
05.12.23 | yeee you build transportation and then stick his backpack to whatever you build lol |
Colton
05.12.23 | yeah adam I solved that by just ultrahanding a few tree logs together and climbing them |
heyadam
05.12.23 | There was one area that worked for but I think one of the ways I went into it, it was still too tall - mighta just missed a path! |
PotsyTater
05.12.23 | If you are talking about the ice cliff by the water fall there is a path you have to walk behind the aterfall to get to where there is no ice and you can climb. I didn’t spot it at first |
PotsyTater
05.12.23 | A tip my friend who has been playing the leak gave me is once you get down to ground level you will be given the main quest and if you talk to the nerds you’ll get a depths quest and he suggested doing that quest ASAP because you get a huge QOL improvement from it. Don’t know what that is but yeah just thought I’d share. Maybe it’s the glider lol. |
heyadam
05.12.23 | I got that one! When you follow that trail up, there’s a giant ice wall with the river they splits the area in half. There’s like a robo by a cooking pot. I think the way up was to teleport (forget the term already lol) to a platform |
heyadam
05.12.23 | hahaha damn, I’m going the opposite direction bc I got a quest for an item I really want now — maybe I’ll turn around and do that first 😂 |
PotsyTater
05.12.23 | Oh yeah idk then but I went to ice realm first and had no problems |
heyadam
05.12.23 | okay I haven’t bomb shield surfed yet but I tried something else and it failed, I’m guessing it blows up and shoots you up in the air on your shield and you can go all Neo bow mode lol. Out of bomb plants but def trying that next |

Gyromania
05.13.23 | I just hope there’s actual dungeons this time around |
Atari
05.13.23 | The amount of love they put into this game is very clear. So many little touches that keep it feeling fresh and I’ve definitely had to use my brain more than botw. Trying to avoid spoilers for now but I’m honestly speechless from all the crazy ideas the game throws at you just in the first few hours |
Colton
05.13.23 | really loving the game, imagining it will be pretty controversial though due to the “this is just BOTW DLC” crowd but personally I love going back to that world and having it be so much more alive |
Colton
05.13.23 | also certain shrines make me feel like an actual idiot. like the one where you have to stack 3 springs on top of each other. spent over 20 minutes trying to figure it out because I didn’t realize you can climb them |
heyadam
05.13.23 | I got dunked on so hard by the Kakariko village shrine for like twenty minutes as well lol. I ended up cheesing it, but that's what I like about the toolset they give you -- you can come up with weird shit that somehow just barely works.
And yeah, the "botw dlc" crowd is going to be annoying, but they're probably the ones that think botw was overhyped in the first place. Not like this will change anyone's mind |
heyadam
05.13.23 | also in botw you couldn't build a very stupidly long spear to carry around so this game is obvi better |
Colton
05.13.23 | try fusing a spear to a lizalfos tail. probably my favourite weapon ever |
heyadam
05.13.23 | these next 6.5 of work is going to go by stupidly slow |
PotsyTater
05.13.23 | The lizard tail whip is GOATED |
Colton
05.13.23 | it's really nice being able to just yeet yourself into the sky from a tower to get around. definitely gonna upgrade my stamina a lot more than health so I can glide for longer. it was one of my favourite aspects of BOTW and they've just turned it up to 11 here |
heyadam
05.13.23 | The diving is so much fun too lol. I haven't really been back up to the sky much since touching down besides doing one shrine randomly -- will probably fly around more tonight |
Colton
05.13.23 | keep in mind when you see a little chunk of rock fall down to the surface you can use rewind on it to go up to the sky. convenient for finding islands up there, or just for getting around |
Colton
05.13.23 | also just learned you can fuse a minecart to your shield to make shieldsurfing way better |
heyadam
05.13.23 | oh shit that's big brain about the falling rocks (and I think they showed that in the trailer now that I think about it?). Didn't think about that |
PotsyTater
05.13.23 | LMAO amazing
I’m probably gonna prioritize stamina for a while too. I ususally do a lot of filling out the map and exploring before I do questing |
heyadam
05.13.23 | @gyro I heard the dungeons are actually Temples this time and they're way more like og dungeons in comparison to botw |
Colton
05.13.23 | divine beasts were pretty good but it was lame how they all looked the same. felt like one dungeon in 4 parts. any degree of variation in theme and setting will be very welcome. probably not gonna even get to one for a while though. I’m taking my time with this one, barely even using fast travel |
Colton
05.13.23 | I actually used rewind on a fallen rock to get up to an island that had a chest hanging from a string. I cut it down and then followed the chest all the way to the ground and landed smack in the middle of Kakariko Village. could not find the chest though :( |
Gyromania
05.13.23 | Just got to my first sky Island after the intro cinematic. How far are you guys rn? |
heyadam
05.13.23 | Probs about six hours or seven hours in! Not too far at all. I’m fuckin around trying to find the woodlands area again as I can’t remember without looking it up — there’s a quest I wanna complete that’s there |

05.13.23 | You guys fight that optional boss on the Great Sky Island? I forget it’s name already but it’s a compilation of blocks that changes shape to attack you. Pretty neat optional fight, super easy tho |
Colton
05.13.23 | yeah I fought it. how did you get down after? that was the hard part for me |
Colton
05.13.23 | also it dropped some weird spinny thing that I couldn’t pick up not sure what that was |
Gyromania
05.13.23 | There’s a huge block nearby that you can use to get back across to the island you came from. Or at least the island I came from. It was a simple hop to and fro for me. The thing it drops seems to only be to upgrade a weapon. I only had a stick on me at the time, all my other weapons were already fused.
Brought a lvl 2 stick up to 12 |
Colton
05.13.23 | I swear there wasn’t a block for me |
heyadam
05.13.23 | I love they they kept the durability system but allowed fusing to make equipment more durable — they really knocked it out of the park with their design and building on the systems they already made |
PotsyTater
05.14.23 | There is definitely a block and there is definitely a puddle you can dive into as well, I did both |
PotsyTater
05.14.23 | And the thing it dropped was something you could fuse to a weapon, pretty strong enhancement |
heyadam
05.14.23 | lmfao just got a fire hydrant from one of the gachapons |
heyadam
05.14.23 | my fav way to cheese some shrine things is to take a platform and use grab to move float it up and parallel to a platform you are trying to get to, hold it there for like fifteen seconds, and then let it drop. Then you reverse time, get it to float next to whatever ledge you are trying to get to and then ascend through it lol |
Gyromania
05.14.23 | I wish I could have gotten greater value out of it. If I see another one of those I’m gonna deliberately wait until I have a much better weapon for fusing.
Just got on the ground. Gotta say I think I like that intro more than the great plateau from botw. |

PotsyTater
05.14.23 | I get mad anxiety fusing rare shit to my weapons knowing that in botw you needed all this shit to upgrade your armour. Grinding fucking dragon parts and shooting stars for the old school tunic of the Wild was broooootuhl |
heyadam
05.14.23 | it was brutal — I couldn’t imagine fusing a dragon scale to a boko spear or some shit lmao |

PotsyTater
05.14.23 | Note to self: check behind every waterfall lol |

PotsyTater
05.14.23 | Yeah it definitely does not bring the fashion |

Gyromania
05.14.23 | I love that dude who keeps popping up failing to fit those signs into place. Rly decent rewards with him and I love engineering solutions to keep them upright. Some of them are genuinely tricky.
I’ve been playing pretty aimlessly overall tho. Once I got the glider I just started dick around trying to get height off of the first sky island to explore whatever is off in the distance. I immediately went to the castle (did this in the first game too) and got some loot that is wayyyyyyyy OP for this part of the game (swords and bows at like lvl 75). What’s everyone else been doing? Maybe other people are just gunning it for the main campaign but I tend to meander for hours and hours in these games |
Gyromania
05.14.23 | “ Note to self: check behind every waterfall lol”
Dude I deliberately did this for a huge waterfall I saw and there was nothing there. Ended up drowning since Link is a massive puss. Dude should absolutely get checked for lung cancer if his stamina is that shite
Side note: despite this game looking fantastic and (so far) running smoothly, some things do look quite shitty. The Hyrule Castle in the distance looks bloody awful, particularly the rly rough waterfall textures. Can’t blame the devs tho, it’s Nintendo’s fault for never making a more powerful version of the Switch |
Colton
05.14.23 | sometimes it looks shitty other times it’s probably my favourite game ever graphics wise |
PotsyTater
05.14.23 | I like the sign guy too lol

heyadam
05.14.23 | I support small businesses |
PotsyTater
05.14.23 | The froggy armour is a side quest for the news paper company you get it at a outpost in Hebra. I don’t own any of it yet but she showed me the armour and told me if I do the quest chain for her she will give it to me
I bought the hylian armour from the main hub by the castle. Rito town you can buy the Hebra winter clothes again. The diving gear shirt was given to me for doing one of the shrines in the sky above a tower, after you do it a automaton gives you a time trial diving test and if you beat it he gives you that shirt. And then yeah I just found the climber shirt. |
Gyromania
05.14.23 | Agreed hard regarding the verticality. I love how the islands aren’t all just floating along the same axis. There are some that look thousands of feet higher than the sky island you start at, and many more that are even lower. Makes exploration so much more rewarding.
Also makes Skyward Sword completely obsolete and honestly not worth ever playing again lol |
PotsyTater
05.14.23 | Speaking of verticality the commute to the birb temple in the sky is the best thing in this game so far |
Gyromania
05.14.23 | Damn, you guys are so far ahead of me. Idek what birb you speak of |

PotsyTater
05.15.23 | @heyadam I have 6 and I’m doing just fine. About to fight the boss tho that might change
Yeah I did built for rails, that was one of my favourites so far because at first it’s like “wtf” but once your mind wraps around it it just makes so much sense and is quite intuitive |
PotsyTater
05.15.23 | Damn that was a fun ass boss fight. Classic Zelda styles |
Colton
05.15.23 | I was not able to do the third part and had to shamefully look it up |
Trebor.
05.15.23 | I've done like 10 shrines so far and they are better so far |
PotsyTater
05.15.23 | @colton the third part is the one with the two rails that merge into one rail and you have to basically put three “fins” on the underside right? Figuring that one out was gratifying
I think the shrines in this game are better too. I loved the botw shrines but some of them were beyond jank. These ones even the most difficult ones at least feel intuitive once you get there. It’s like a “eureka” moment instead of a “I don’t know if I did that the way I was supposed to or if I just got lucky” moment. They did a really good job |
Gyromania
05.15.23 | Where is it at Colton?
I’ve done about 15 shrines so far and I agree with Treb, they seem much better already |
Gyromania
05.15.23 | I think the reveal of the depths would have been a much crazier moment if I didn’t already experience this in Elden Ring. Hopefully it’s enjoyable down here, I’ve heard some people saying the whole thing is incredibly homogeneous. Altho I kind of felt that way about Siofra |
PotsyTater
05.15.23 | Lmao the miners armour is so goofy |
PotsyTater
05.15.23 | Link looking like a circuit gay 💅 |
heyadam
05.15.23 | ummmm I just jumped onto what I thought was a normal object and plummeted into a deep cave with a fuckin hidden shrine in it lmao. soooo lit (colloquially and literally bc of the brightbloom seeds I’m shooting everywhere) |
Gyromania
05.15.23 | Found the royal guard uniform and have been rocking that.
Have you guys been mostly just wandering around checking stuff out? |
PotsyTater
05.15.23 | Ya I’ve mostly just been ‘splorin, but I did the birb temple because one temple is a prerequesite to get the final rune (auto build) |
heyadam
05.15.23 | Yeah 100% just fuckin around and exploring. Headed to the gov drone temple rn as well, but stopping at any shrines and cool shit I see along the way — it’s been 3 hours of working my way over there already |
PotsyTater
05.15.23 | Im gonna start slowly meandering my way over to fish world now |
Gyromania
05.15.23 | This is probably the most I’ve enjoyed a game since Elden Ring |
PotsyTater
05.15.23 | I mean yeah that was to be expected |
heyadam
05.15.23 | I just wish it had the interactive environment on the level of Sonic Frontiers, you know? |
heyadam
05.15.23 | lol just found the miners top too, def looks like he’s about to go to Rammstein night at the gay club |
PotsyTater
05.15.23 | Cannot wait to complete the look |
Colton
05.15.23 | the horse riding minigame at the highland stable is weirdly exhilarating |
Colton
05.15.23 | also found this girl there telling me about the Lake of the Horse God and the Great White Stallion that lives there. just happened to have enough stamina restoring food to tame it. it is majestic af |
Colton
05.15.23 | love how I was guided to it just by talking to NPCs and following actual directions, no actual quest or objective |
PotsyTater
05.15.23 | Is that the same white horse that belonged to Zelda from the last game or a different one?
Just noticed it transferred all my horses over from my old save file that’s dope |
Colton
05.15.23 | don’t remember seeing her have it. it’s huge and mauls everything it runs into |
Colton
05.15.23 | also I nutted the first time I opened a chest and it let me remove something from my inventory right then and there without having to close the chest, open my inventory to drop something and then open the chest again |
PotsyTater
05.15.23 | Oh definitely not then. Zelda’s white horse is normal size but has maxed out stamina and speed stats. I’m guessing this one is like the white version of Ganondorf’s horse then. I was so stoked to see that I still had both of those horses in the stable, thought I was gonna be stuck with shit horses for a while
And yeah that is a great qol improvement. Another tiny qol improvement is that you can now just smash A to sell inventory. I don’t remember the exact sequence but in botw if you smashed A to sell inventory you often accidentally cancelled out |
GreyShadow
05.15.23 | loved the beginning of the game to death, these new abilities are insane
but i feel like now i'm running into the same issues i had with botw which isn't a bad thing in the grand scheme of things but def unfortunate. i did the rito "dungeon" and while the ascent to the dungeon was amazing, the dungeon itself was just a glorified divine beast and that made me sad (boss was good and it wasn't NOT fun, but i expected more).
exploring is fun, don't get me wrong, but i feel like the rewards just aren't anything special atm |
GreyShadow
05.15.23 | im glad the combat shrines have a purpose but the purpose isn't interesting and so far seem completely unnecessary for those who played botw. beyond those, shrines have been incredibly good |
GreyShadow
05.15.23 | aesthetically the depths and the sky are top tier. zonai stuff is great. i feel like i've enjoyed every single npc to some degree. so yeah, a lot i love about this game. we'll see how it fares when I'm done. still only have 1 dungeon done, gonna tkae my time before I go to the next.
|
PotsyTater
05.15.23 | The rito “dungeon” did feel like a divine beast just because of the shape and layout, but it was a lot more simply and less frustrating and I appreciated that. If it’s the only one of the three that is reminiscent of the divine beasts then I’m totally ok with it. It’s a nice set piece and adds variety. Just an unfortunate one to do first for that reason |
GreyShadow
05.15.23 | i have heard the others are better so i'm excited! i also was not properly equipped for the cold so i was admittedly for frustrated because of that. aesthetic was good, it just felt so...small |
PotsyTater
05.15.23 | It did feel small. I’ll only be salty about it if the others are like it tho. If you consider that commute a part of the temple tho it’s righteous |
Gyromania
05.15.23 | God damn I feel like I’m so far behind in this game lol. I’ve just been in Zora’s Domain exploring, farming materials, and just generally dicking around, meanwhile you guys are doing main dungeons and finding complete armour sets |
heyadam
05.15.23 | ^ haha I think that's part of what makes the game good/hard to talk about sometimes. There's just so many different approaches. Like my roommate has done nothing but explored the depths and I've barely touched that area yet. I went to bed and stopped last night right outside of the shrine before the Rito temple, so I'll probably try and knock out that temple tonight.
The sense of personalized adventure is something I don't think really any game besides these two games have really captured yet. |

05.15.23 | Yeah I think I’m gonna explore my way to each temple and fill out the map before i return to the depths. That way I’ll have a lot more depths treasure maps by the time I get there too |
GreyShadow
05.15.23 | it's so fun to discuss different approaches with people, love that these games have inspired conversation like that |
heyadam
05.15.23 | I think I'm going to do this temple and then really start exploring the skylands because I also hardly ever do that in any sort of systematized way. I kinda just get yeeted by a tower and and walk around a random one. Some of them seem procedurally generated and some of the others definitely feel designed, but I want to start dotting the sky map with shrine teleports. |
PotsyTater
05.15.23 | Sky map will be much easier to efficiently and thoroughly explore with auto build if you don’t have that yet and a whole bunch of battery upgrades from mining the depths
So I’m probably gonna do that last and for now just keep doing what I can from my tower yeets and rewinding sky rubble |
heyadam
05.15.23 | damn so maybe explore a lot of depths before the sky? yeah I guess I'll wait to see how I like autobuild and how it super works to decide what to do after the first temple |
Gyromania
05.15.23 | Heyadem: I’ve also run around the depths and lit quite a bit of it up. And yeah I agree, it’s pretty neat that none of us are experiencing it in the same order.
Has anyone found the Jirutagumac Shrine? That was a pretty sweet discovery |
PotsyTater
05.15.23 | Idk which one is that? |
Gyromania
05.15.23 | Rotating ball in the sky |
heyadam
05.15.23 | yeah I did that one! I was like wtf is this Death Star doing right here |
PotsyTater
05.15.23 | Ya I did that last night was fun |
Gyromania
05.15.23 | Have you guys tried attaching a spring to your shield? Fkn hilarious when enemies attack you. I’ve pushed so many to their deaths just by holding block by a ledge. Also the shield and mine cart combination is amazingly sick, highly recommended. |
loveisamixtape
05.15.23 | afraid of spoilers so i’m not reading above here but man the game is so good i haven’t stopped much the past 3 days. i’m 20 shrines in and have beaten the NW boss, feel like i have barely scratched the surface, having so much fun attaching stuff together |
loveisamixtape
05.15.23 | also has anyone done the west neculda sky crystal shrine quest? possibly my favorite thing like it i’ve ever done in zelda lmao |
Colton
05.15.23 | is that the one by kakariko village kinda? |
Colton
05.15.23 | recently learned you can use rewind to reverse movement caused by ultrahand. so you can pick up a glider, push it off the edge of an island, then set it back down, get on it, and use rewind to fly it into the air without having to use rails or rockets or anything |
PotsyTater
05.15.23 | @love which one is that
@gyro spring shield is goated, I also use it to get the drop on the big rock dudes and blupees etc
@colton yeah there are several shrines where you have to do that. Pretty dope |
heyadam
05.15.23 | Rocket shield is hilarious too haha, much more officiant than Revali could have ever been |
loveisamixtape
05.15.23 | it’s on a random sky island, u have to bring the crystal to the entrance to make the shrine appear and it’s on another island right next to it |
loveisamixtape
05.15.23 | it’s the ukoojisi shrine |
PotsyTater
05.15.23 | the one where you have to build a jet to transport it back? That one was sick |
PotsyTater
05.16.23 | Holy fuck the fish temple commute |
PotsyTater
05.16.23 | Zero grav flux fight is the best thing that’s ever happened |
Gyromania
05.16.23 | Talking about reaching the peak of that mountain in Zora’s Domain? That seemed to take forever for me |
heyadam
05.16.23 | the character designs are peak — they’re all so good! just finished the Rito temple battle. I literally was down to my second to last arrow which made it all so dramatic lol |
Gyromania
05.16.23 | These are the classic Zelda temples? Where are guys finding these? |
Gyromania
05.16.23 | Flux Construct 2 is so much fun to fight |
PotsyTater
05.16.23 | @gyro the peak of the mountain? Lmao no… much much higher than that |
PotsyTater
05.16.23 | Zora “temple” and commute was better than rito “temple” and commute (which was also amazing tho) but the rito boss was better than the Zora boss by far |
loveisamixtape
05.16.23 | @potsy yes the jet one i had so much fun doing that one |
Colton
05.16.23 | haven’t done anything for the main story at all, last objective I got was to go learn about the 4 phenomena or whatever in each region. still had so much to do though |
PotsyTater
05.16.23 | Colton have you met Koltin yet |
Gyromania
05.16.23 | There’s a certain returning boss from the first game in the depths. Pretty sweet |
PotsyTater
05.16.23 | Watching videos of the creative ways people are collecting and mass torturing koroks like giant rotating spit roasting machines with like 30 flame throwers attached lmao |
heyadam
05.16.23 | yeah the crucifixion videos with the Latin choral music is so fuckin funny |
Gyromania
05.17.23 | Maaaaaan this game is so damn good |
GreyShadow
05.17.23 | the Flux Constructs are absurdly fun so far |
Gyromania
05.17.23 | Yeah man agreed. The second one I fought was so good |
heyadam
05.17.23 | it really is so good — don’t want recency bias to talk, and playing through botw was a seriously amazing experience for me, but this perfected what botw was trying to do |
Gyromania
05.17.23 | 100% ^ was actually just saying this same thing to a friend who’s on the fence about playing it. I had a good bit of fun with breath of the wild but this seems vastly better to me just based off the mechanics alone, not even including how much bigger and more enjoyable the world is. It might be recency bias but I for sure wasn’t this into botw when I played it for the first time |
PotsyTater
05.17.23 | The mystic set you get from koltin is peak Zelda fashion my god |
PotsyTater
05.17.23 | It’s a shame that it’s passive makes you not want to wear it lol |
loveisamixtape
05.17.23 | embarrassingly stuck in kora land rn because i can’t find this stupid ass king!!! fuck the king imo |
PotsyTater
05.17.23 | He’s behind the waterfall you climb to go see Sidon |
heyadam
05.17.23 | what’s the best weapon against the spooky goop hands? I swear I one shotted it once but now I do nothing lol.
@pots that’s the set I was going for most! Been picking up glowing rabbit shit as much as possible |
PotsyTater
05.17.23 | Idk I literally just encountered spooky goop hands for the first time and shot it with like 3 arrows and then it just left |
heyadam
05.17.23 | can we also appreciate how there’s an actual pretty dece story too? just did the first kind of “memory” thing and it’s interesting |
heyadam
05.17.23 | some dev was read a comment that was like “enemies don’t even throw hands, game sux” and goop hands were born |
PotsyTater
05.17.23 | That thing reminded me of the hands in ocarina of time that take you to the start of the temple or whatever. I was wondering if that thing would take you to the chasm if it grabbed you or something. |
heyadam
05.17.23 | the basic tunic also looks so fuckin sick — will probs just level it up all the way |
PotsyTater
05.17.23 | Basic tunic? |
heyadam
05.17.23 | Not actually called basic tunic haha, but the “Archaic Tunic” |
PotsyTater
05.17.23 | Ooooh sky toga. Yeah it’s a vibe. |
Gyromania
05.17.23 | Can’t find this sky fish island thingy |
PotsyTater
05.17.23 | Look at the sky map there is a sky island shaped like a fish above Zora realm. There is a waterfall flowing from it. You have to launch yourself into the air with your Zora suit on and swim up the suspended waterfall onto the fish shaped island |
loveisamixtape
05.17.23 | i figured out the waterfall thing right after i commented thank u tho potsy
i’m currently at the uhh 4 waterfalls u have to activate or whatever. having a lot of fun. the zora stuff in general has taken me way longer than anything else so far bc it’s been hard to find any of this shit. when i got the sky fish land thing i felt like fuckin jimmy neutron tho |
Colton

heyadam
05.17.23 | ran around t h e d e p t h s last night for a while |
GreyShadow
05.17.23 | npcs feel very alive in this game. Having a great time in Kakariko. They do a great job shrouding this game in mystery.
story has me pretty intrigued ! not expecting something masterclass but definitely already seems way more substantial than botw. there's more of a hook this time |
loveisamixtape
05.17.23 | the depths r so fucking sick. easily one of the coolest things about the game |
GreyShadow
05.17.23 | i followed a dragon into the depths last night. it was one of *those* experiences. like just wow |
PotsyTater
05.17.23 | I love when you are sky diving and a shooting star goes by and you can chase it and catch it |
Colton
05.17.23 | the depths are cool but so far haven't really found anything there except enemy camps, rocks with zonaite in them and poe (whatever that is) hoping there's more to it |
heyadam
05.17.23 | I think the depths have really good environmental storytelling — like wtf is going on? haha, the statues, old ruins and stuff… I feel like there’s going to be really good payoff. Vibes r just cool too
Also lol at a certain faction being down there 😂 makes sense from previous events |
Gyromania
05.17.23 | I found a pretty cool area of the depths and a returning boss from BotW.
Not sure if you guys have cooked this recipe yet but: enduring mushroom skewer is an absolute must. I’ve been getting huge distance thanks to these things |
PotsyTater
05.17.23 | What’s the recipe?
Also yeah depths are cool. I have found two bosses down there so far and a few pieces of great loot. There better be a fifth temple down there |
heyadam
05.17.23 | ooo yeah sharing fav recipes will be dope bc I really didn't utilize cooking different things too often -- just would make a bunch of big heart restores for boss battles and stuff. |
PotsyTater
05.17.23 | My link doesn’t need performance enhancing drugs |
heyadam
05.17.23 | My link does bc he needs Purah to notice him |
PotsyTater
05.17.23 | Everyone keeps talking about purahs glow up and I’m just here wonderin why no one is talking about how thicc Lady Yona is
Mmmm mantarussy |
heyadam
05.17.23 | lmfao, I haven't actually met her yet so I'm withholding giving up Purah as zelda mommy.
Mipha made people question a lot of things, so I'm sure the baton was passed well |
PotsyTater
05.17.23 | Lady Yona is the next natural step towards absolute degeneracy for people who began questioning after Mipha |
heyadam
05.17.23 | Godspeed and good luck to all my brothers and sisters 🙏🏽 |
Colton
05.17.23 | Cece is the inarguable most fuckable Zelda character |
PotsyTater
05.17.23 | Based |
heyadam
05.17.23 | I hate and love the stupid mushroom hats equally |
PotsyTater
05.17.23 | Best new storyline |
heyadam
05.17.23 | I love how shit's literally falling out of the sky, spooky goop hands are crawling out from the pit of Hyrule Hell, and Hateno village is being taken over by a successful Etsy shop leading into mayoral upheaval lol |
Colton
05.18.23 | these proving grounds shrines are hard af |
Colton
05.18.23 | “The Hunt” especially |
PotsyTater
05.18.23 | Tarry town is bussin these days |
PotsyTater
05.18.23 | Or should I say
Bus-son |
heyadam
05.18.23 | choo choo motherfuckers
can’t wait to see it haha |
PotsyTater
05.18.23 | JESUS CHRIST PHANTOM GANON |
heyadam
05.18.23 | lmao love that out of context bc I can’t conceptualize it
I’m blindly running around trying to find a fairy fountain bc an NPC told me roughly where but I got distracted and forgot where they said it was : ( |
PotsyTater
05.18.23 | I’m doing the labrinth in the north east corner. It’s a two parter, one in the sky and one on the ground. The basement of the ground one has a real fun surprise. |
heyadam
05.18.23 | Penn fuckin rules lol, so hammy |
PotsyTater
05.18.23 | Just copped a fierce diety hat |
Gyromania
05.18.23 | Pots: forgot to return to this thread yesterday myb. The recipe is simply just the golden mushroom (can’t remember it’s name atm) cooked. I actually don’t have anymore of them but I had a bunch and all of them gave me overcharged stamina. |
Gyromania
05.18.23 | The water temple was cool, kind of hoping the other temples are a bit bigger tho. The boss fight was super easy but enjoyable, hope there are more wacky ones like that |
loveisamixtape
05.18.23 | yea i got water temple boss first try. the faucets were annoying to me until i got the first one and then it was like ohhh for the rest
i’m taking a break from the temple / main quests now tho and just grinding shrines n random side quests. just did the diving through hoops one after taking a device literally all the way to the top of that island, that was v neat |
PotsyTater
05.19.23 | I thought the water temple boss was dogshit tbh |
Gyromania
05.19.23 | love- yeah that’s what I did shortly after beating the water temple. Just been locating shrines, towers, and finding and completing side quests. A lot more fun that just gunning it for the main objective imo.
Potsy - dogshit, really? It wasn’t super engaging but idk, it was neat. Bosses in this game seem more varied in general than they were in botw which I’m happy about. |
PotsyTater
05.19.23 | Bruh I just found a golden horse and it is FAST FAST |
Colton
05.19.23 | just doing my first temple now (water temple) i wasn’t expecting the gravity stuff wow |
PotsyTater
05.19.23 | The gravity stuff is so unbelievably satisfying. Fighting the flux boss like that is amazing |

05.20.23 | Thread is losing steam |
PotsyTater
05.20.23 | The game isn’t tho |
heyadam
05.20.23 | haha I haven’t been able to play in a couple days, don’t have anything fun to contribute : / hopefully gonna be able to play for a little bit tonight and then for a couple hours after work tomorrow |
Gyromania
05.20.23 | Yeah I didn’t get to play any yesterday but I’m making up for it now. How far along are you in the game pots? How many temples have you completed
It’s crazy how much stuff there is to do even in smaller areas like kakiriko village. Been here for well over an hour just doing side missions |
heyadam
05.20.23 | Gonna get to play tonight finally : ' ) probs gonna fuck around for an hour or so and then maybe try and tackle the Zora temple. |
PotsyTater
05.20.23 | I’ve just done two temples and two labyrinths and a buttload of shrines and filled out the overworld map |
Gyromania
05.20.23 | Was Death Mountain the second temple you did? |
PotsyTater
05.20.23 | No I did birb and fish |
Colton
05.20.23 | I finally encountered Koltin he’s based and hot |
PotsyTater
05.20.23 | Giving Cece a run for her money as totk bae for sure |
Colton
05.20.23 | somebody’s gotta rank all the NPCs from most to least fuckable |
PotsyTater
05.20.23 | Where is caliggy, he will place josha first for sure |
Colton
05.20.23 | King Dorephan and Fronk are contenders |
PotsyTater
05.20.23 | Excellent choices, king dorph is daddy and I definitely want to blow fronks dorsal fin out |
Trebor.
05.20.23 | I despise hype and hyperbole but this is an improvement on BOTW in every way |
PotsyTater
05.20.23 | It does feel that way I agree |
Gyromania
05.20.23 | I too have met with koltin and he’s indeed a stud. He also gave me fashionable armour |
PotsyTater
05.20.23 | I only need one more piece for the set. I can’t wait to lose all my rupees to fashion |
veninblazer
05.20.23 | Your tears of the kingdom don't fall,
They crash around me |
heyadam
05.20.23 | it’s easily botw perfected, and that’s hard to say but I think it’s true at this point |
PotsyTater
05.21.23 | It’s not a diss to botw, it’s just that good |
Gyromania
05.21.23 | I honestly think botw is a bit overrated and am enjoying this way, way more |
Colton
05.21.23 | BOTW was the blueprint for the perfect open world game, this is the perfect open world game |
loveisamixtape
05.21.23 | this is the first open world game i’ve played since elden ring that didn’t feel ruined by how good elden ring is. i love botw and i would still say this blows it out of the water. probably the second best open world game of all time |
Colton
05.21.23 | elden ring is pretty sick but has a lot less depth than this |
heyadam
05.21.23 | Penn is most fuckable agreed |
PotsyTater
05.21.23 | They should have had prince Sidon instantly inflate to the size of his dad when they put the crown on his head. That would be fucking hilarious. |
heyadam
05.23.23 | Yona wants the L D |
heyadam
05.24.23 | Was looking for king dorephan and I found a climbing bandana instead lol, siiick |
PotsyTater
05.24.23 | Sand temple is best temple
Boss was actually hard too |
heyadam
05.24.23 | I was wondering if the sand boss was found to be the hardest like it was in botw. Thunderblight sucked ass the first (or several) times I tried fighting him |
PotsyTater
05.24.23 | Lol ya thundblight was a dick
At this point I’m done the four temples and I stand by that this is an improvement on botw in most regards but I do admittedly have a few complaints still, mostly in regards to the “temples” and how he sage mechanics |
GreyShadow
05.24.23 | thought Fire Temple was wayyyy better than Wind even if not exactly what I want from a Zelda dungeon and that's all I've done. haven't played in 2 days sadface.
i like the sage party member thing. it's not outstanding but it's cute/fun. i actually kinda wish they just became callable party members instead of their spirits but I guess this was safer for...continuity (if anyone cared lol) |
GreyShadow
05.24.23 | yano, i'm really missing my double clawshot atm |
PotsyTater
05.24.23 | My temple rant is a bit too long winded to type right now but in regards to the sages I like them as well, I just don’t like the execution. Having to run around and find each of them to execute their powers feels awful in the middle of heated combat, especially once you have a lot of them. The sand temple boss is a perfect example of why this is a problem. Without giving much away, you are grappling with trying to keep your eye on a bunch of minor enemies, the boss, and riju at the same time and it’s absolutely chaotic. Even in the overworld, it’s not practical to use the sage powers if you are in a fight with numerous enemies because your ability to crowd control just goes out the window when you start panning the camera around looking for the Sage sprites. Super easy to lose track of the enemies and have one get behind you. You should be able to just use another wheel like the purah tablet to prompt their powers. |
GreyShadow
05.24.23 | oh, completely agree with that! execution is definitely flawed and it's clear they were more of a tack on as opposed to a fully fleshed out feature which is a shame because in concept, fighting mobs could've been REALLY fun with the squad. As it is, it's neat! |
PotsyTater
05.24.23 | I’ll try and keep it short but my thing with the temples is that I feel mislead by the promise of more traditional structure. The wind and water temples are both basically just simplified divine beasts. TOO simplified if you ask me. The puzzling shouldn’t be the main focus of the puzzles are going to be so simplistic. If there were more diverse enemies and some mini bosses that would be fine but they are really bare bones. The fire temple was better structurally, but the puzzling element was virtually non existent and the cart gimmick got tedious quickly so that didn’t solve the problem either. Sand temple is the closest thing to what I feel the temples should have been. More combat focused rooms mixed in with the puzzling and much more of a confined feeling. In an ideal world each temple would have the fun commute and then the temple would actually be a dungeon entirely separate from the open world. It would be actual old school temples with mini bosses and unique enemies and keys/map/compasses. These feel too simple and bare. I don’t think the temples in this one are actually much of an improvement on botw, despite the commutes being epic and the bosses being more diverse (for better or worse) |
GreyShadow
05.24.23 | well you just pointed me to where I'm going next when I feel like doing the main story lol, gonna save the Gerudo area for last. i'll save my final thoughts for when I'm done but you're def hitting it on the nail as for what I'm feeling essentially |
heyadam
05.24.23 | gonna take on the water temple tonight — any time with my himbo prince Sidon is a good time 🤙🏽 might take a story break after that and map more D E P T H S
|
PotsyTater
05.24.23 | Ya ima just quest and shrine for a while now that I’ve beaten the first four temples |
PotsyTater
05.24.23 | The quests where you raid enemy camps with a small unit of hyrules army are so fun |
nol
05.24.23 | I just can’t make myself sit through the same bs in this game all over again. that is my main opinion. |
nol
05.24.23 | I fooled myself into thinking I could because HyPE, but I was wrong. Also this game has as many moments that look like ass as it does moments that look good. not thrilled lol |
heyadam
05.24.23 | what’s the same bs to you? |
nol
05.24.23 | the shrines and just the open world traversal. It’s not exactly the same but it’s similar enough to remind me what got me bored with BOTW.
and like I’m a picky hoe but I swear half the shrines the walls are just having a fucking aneurism when you are walking around like this game looks so off to me. That flicker is just everywhere too once you notice it. Drives me nuts. |
PotsyTater
05.24.23 | Buddy likes Pokémon scarlet/violet and is complaining about sitting through the “same bs” and it “look(ing) like ass”
Easily the all time biggest Nilton L of a sea of many massive Nilton L’s |
heyadam
05.24.23 | I upgraded to an OLED for anticipation for this and a couple other games, and it’s been looking fine for me in handheld, but yeah the switch’s hardware is it’s one big hiccup for sure. I had to mess with my monitor settings for it to look good docked, but it is a bit muddier there |
heyadam
05.24.23 | after playing scarlet/violet I can truly endure any frame rate and any fidelity lol. Graphics don’t tend to bother me overall though - if anything it’s a marvel of art direction how they’re able to sidestep a lot of the switch limitation |
nol
05.24.23 | brother Pokémon started this |
nol
05.24.23 | After playing Pokémon I notice graphical flaws in everything because I was so honed in on it for months. I actually basically can’t stomach even looking at SV anymore |
nol
05.24.23 | I could go into more detail about why I was so into Pokémon, but the story takes some surprisingly dark turns |
Colton
05.24.23 | lizard tail spear is the all time best zelda weapon |
heyadam
05.24.23 | Yeah I legit always have one in my inventory lmao. I also just love the stupidly long weapons - also the arrow attachments are amazing |
PotsyTater
05.25.23 | “ could go into more detail about why I was so into Pokémon, but the story takes some surprisingly dark turns”
Lmao
Also agreed with heyadam that the art direction is as beautiful as it is despite the hardware limitations |
PotsyTater
05.25.23 | I honestly haven’t fucked around with arrow attachments much beyond the realm of just what is obvious because I’m a hoarder and won’t use anything I don’t have large quantities of. What are some highlights for you adam |
heyadam
05.25.23 | yeah the hoarding is real haha. octoballon arrows are hilarious for slow yeeting, Keese wings/eyeballs are goated
making a smokescreen with a puffshroom helped me not get dunked on by the gloomy hands one time when I was just not in a good position to fight them. also using precious gems as attachments always makes me cringe in pain, but the elemental damage is sick from them |
PotsyTater
05.25.23 | Yeah the Keene eyes make homing arrows I heard? Same with the wings? Does oxtoballoon arrows make them float bye bye? |
heyadam
05.25.23 | Yeah enemies or objects 😂 it’s pretty funny
keese wings extend the arrow range, and yeah the homing quality with eyes is v satisfying to use. I need to fuck around with shield stuff more. I heard it’s fun to stick a minecart to a shield to skateboard lol |
heyadam
05.25.23 | I saved a chest that started falling off a cliff one time by hitting it with an octo-arrow and then ultrahanding it when it got closer lol.
I really pulled of some true gamer moves to get five arrows |
PotsyTater
05.25.23 | Oh yeah I do the minecart thing all the time lmao |
heyadam
05.25.23 | does the durability on it last a while? I’m mad I never really used it lol. I legit need to go grind some mobs for some bows. Broke my last one last night.
Also still haven’t found that mf Hetsu yet 💀 might just look up his location later lol |
PotsyTater
05.25.23 | Yeah it lasts a bit not too bad
Follow the north west road from look out camp to find hetsu |
heyadam
05.25.23 | dope, absolutely going to do that later -- also when/how tf do you get autobuild? beat the rito temple but nothing happened and it didn't give me a marker anywhere to talk to someone about it |
PotsyTater
05.25.23 | Josha quest line
She sends you to the depths to retrieve it |
PotsyTater
05.26.23 | Has anyone got the master sword yet? That was so sick |
heyadam
05.26.23 | 2 busy dying 2 bokopirates that took over Lurelin |
Colton
05.26.23 | adam youre not ready for the lurelin restoration dance |
heyadam
05.26.23 | the ost is going dummy in the Zora waterways |
heyadam
05.26.23 | hahaha dude I don’t doubt it — I got dunked on a couple of times so I left for now |
PotsyTater
05.26.23 | Lmao
On another note, the fucking sound that plays when you descend into the chasm is 😩 |
heyadam
05.26.23 | Yeah dude the sound design in general has been awesome so far |
heyadam
05.26.23 | was not ready for the gravity change thing lmao |
PotsyTater
05.26.23 | Low grav areas are goated
Also the way you obtain the master sword is amazing and what it does is even more amazing |
heyadam
05.26.23 | I’m so stoked - I genuinely can’t believe how much fun I’m having with this game. Pots did you do all the temples and then just follow the crumbs for the master sword? Normally I pace and spread out all the temples with hours in between, but I’m thinking of just knocking them out a little quicker |
PotsyTater
05.26.23 | I did all the temples and then decided I wanted to go check out what’s going on with korok forest these days and one thing led to another…. |
PotsyTater
05.26.23 | No way did I just find links ocarina of time tights |
PotsyTater
05.26.23 | It brings me so much pain to use the “unique” weapons found in the chasm |
PotsyTater
05.28.23 | Guys, go into the big storm cloud in the south east sky
You won’t be able to see shit but figure it out
Find the shrine
Based things happen from there |
heyadam
05.28.23 | “Based things happen from there” is all I need lmao |
PotsyTater
05.28.23 | The fact that this is just shit I’m randomly stumbling upon is absolutely insane
Dude
So sad I can’t say anything lol |
PotsyTater
05.28.23 | There is a chance you might need the master sword before you can do this quest I’m not sure tho hmm |
loveisamixtape
05.28.23 | i’ve been putting off doing the final two temples (fire & electric) but idk why at this point… it’s like i don’t want it to be over. but i assume i will still wanna keep playing even after that |
Colton
05.28.23 | had such a fun session last night. descended into the depths to find a treasure a map pointed me to down there. immediately had to fight an Obsidian Frox which kicked my ass until I realized I can snipe it with keese eyeballs. headed toward the treasure but ran into a giant cliff. so I awkwardly navigated around it, running along the side of the cliff in the dark having no idea if it was the right way or not. but it was. then I got to a mine where all the enemies were fuckin me up, and I just started sprinting through it, literally with a quarter of a heart left but unable to heal. wasn’t sure if I was going the right way but again I was. finally got to the treasure and it was just poe. was disappointed but then I saw there’s actually a chest right there. inside it was the coolest treasure there possibly could have been |
Colton
05.28.23 | navigating the depths is super fun when you have a treasure map |
PotsyTater
05.28.23 | @love it is far from over after the temples
What treasure did you get? I’ve also been doing the depths a lot and going for treasure maps. The quest I was talking about earlier results in something that will greatly increase your survivability in the depths btw . |
Colton
05.28.23 | (SPOILERS) I got the Wind Waker tunic and hat from the maps I had. then I googled where to find the pants cause not having a full set would have killed me. also found the Wind Waker boomerang (which would be a lot cooler if it didn’t break) and the Twilight Princess tunic |
PotsyTater
05.28.23 | (ALSO SPOILERS) Nice I am just missing one piece of the wind waker and ocarina of time tunics. I also have one piece of the hero tunic and the twilight princess tunic. Btw I discovered you can repurchase any unique weapons like the wind waker boomerang from the Poe statues. I found that boomerang and also the original Zelda sword and the skyward sword sword |
Gyromania
05.28.23 | Took a four day break from this game and I am now incredibly far behind everyone haha. I’m a bit upset about the temples so far. A reviewer really mislead me into believing original dungeons have come back and uh, no |
Colton
05.28.23 | SPOILERS I initially just had the Twilight Princess tunic and the Wind Waker hat and the slight difference in the shades of green was killing me, so glad I have a full set now. it actually makes the whole game more enjoyable for me. pretty sure in BOTW you had to do every shrine to get the green tunic and even then it was a BOTW version of it, not the version from any of the older games. perfect fan service |
Colton
05.28.23 | don't rush it gyro there's a ridiculous amount of side content
has anyone discovered the Dondons |
PotsyTater
05.28.23 | Yeah there definitely was some misleading rumours circulating regarding that. |
Colton
05.28.23 | temples have been alright so far, not amazing but they're fun. I was disappointed there's no gravity stuff on the way up to the bird temple, I thought there would be for all of them |
Colton
05.28.23 | I'm definitely not gonna go for every korok in this game cause fuck that but I'm definitely gonna try to do every shrine and quest |
PotsyTater
05.28.23 | @colton yeah that was the tunic of the Wild with the goofy shorts lol
Which I loved in its own corny way but it’s really cool to have all these old ones. I’m botw you had to use amiibos or whatever they are called to get old tunics like these |
Colton
05.28.23 | I still haven't encountered one of those bargaining statues or whatever they're called. I'm sittin on like 400 poe rn |
PotsyTater
05.28.23 | The one in the main camp where Josha chills will tell you where to find his buddies for a price |
Colton
05.28.23 | gonna do that and the cloud thing you were talking about later |
Colton
05.28.23 | omg just discovered you can throw brightbloom seeds instead of dropping and hitting them or fusing them to arrows |
Colton
05.28.23 | i love this game |
PotsyTater
05.28.23 | Lmao I didn’t know that do u still have to hit them to light like when u drop? |
Colton
05.28.23 | nope |
PotsyTater
05.28.23 | Brilliant
Zelda: Do Whatever You Want |
loveisamixtape
05.28.23 | lol damn i would’ve been so frustrated in the depths initially had i not realized u could throw them. stoked 4 y’all
i just beat the fire temple and boss. temple was arguably the coolest one so far. i wasn’t crazy about the boss fight but the boss itself was Neat |
Colton
05.29.23 | just spent like 15 mins looking for deer cause an old guy at a stable wanted to see me ride one, finally got on one after 5 or so ran away, had a majestic moment as I rode it, immediately got struck by lightning and died |
PotsyTater
05.29.23 | Just realized if you fuse a gloom weapon to a non gloom weapon the gloom effect is nullified and you get a fat weapon boost without the low durability |
Colton
05.29.23 | idk what a gloom weapon is |
Colton
05.29.23 | just did the thunderhead isles last night and wow… the fact that they know you’ll probably get there from the tower and you can’t see shit but if you look at the map you can sort of see where the head of the thunder cloud is and head in that general direction. making blind leaps of faith and just barely paragliding to safety. it’s amazing how this game and BOTW get the player to navigate in a way that feels like it’s wrong because it doesn’t use the usual video game logic or form of guidance, but it always works out in the end |
Colton
05.29.23 | they must have done a lot of player testing to see the ways in which people traverse the map and reward player’s intuition based off of it |
PotsyTater
05.29.23 | Yeah but also I think if you stumble upon the quest in there you are breaking the “intended” story sequence because I’ve heard if you follow the rest of the main story the thundercloud will disperse before you are directed there
But this prompts a pretty hilarious interaction a little further down the line |
heyadam
05.29.23 | I've given myself in to the fact that this game is going to take me years to finish lol. I'm able to play in like 1.5 hour bursts with just how life is rn and stuff, which is good and bad bc most of that time is just fuckin around haha. |
PotsyTater
05.29.23 | It’s pretty fucked up that there are only like 5 of us playing this |
BaselineOOO
05.29.23 | I like this game I play it on Yuzu |
heyadam
05.29.23 | that's honestly surprising that there aren't more people on here -- it's crazy the amount of people I hear talk about it irl |
heyadam
05.29.23 | "just spent like 15 mins looking for deer cause an old guy at a stable wanted to see me ride one, finally got on one after 5 or so ran away, had a majestic moment as I rode it, immediately got struck by lightning and died"
also lmao, it do be like that |
loveisamixtape
05.30.23 | @colton same i left off playing yesterday after getting to the dragonhead island shrine. attempting to “navigate” the islands in the storm was extremely difficult and immersive though, i would basically save the game at each successful leap. i also just began the quests that happen after you open the 10 heart door. game is fuckin gooood |
loveisamixtape
05.30.23 | and yes i also started from the tower and i remember a comment in this thread saying “if you see the storm in the sky go into it and figure it out” or w/e so i was like fuck it. so worth it though thanks to whomever said that in here i’m too lazy to look |
PotsyTater
05.30.23 | Me. After that quest resume the temple quest and then go after Zelda at hyrule castle for a very funny interaction after that. |
Avagantamos
05.30.23 | I've been playing a bit but haven't gotten far. I made it to the sky temple but everything pretty much 1 shot me so I left to go explore and get some more shrines under my belt. one thing I was hoping for in this game was a return of some older style dungeons, and it looked like that's what it was going to be based on the recent trailers. so far though the sky temple has given me big divine beast vibes, so hoping the others can bring more to the table. |
Colton
05.30.23 | so wait is the thunderhead isles stuff connected to the quest where josha tells you to follow the statues in the depths to find a temple? |
Colton
05.30.23 | cause I talked to her after doing all that and she’s still telling me to find that temple but idk where to go |
PotsyTater
05.30.23 | Don’t get your hopes up for traditional dungeons. They are all somewhere between divine beasts and traditional dungeons on the spectrum, but none of them are close enough to traditional dungeons that it satisfies that itch. |
PotsyTater
05.30.23 | Ummm are you talking about joshas quest to get autobuild or are you past that one? |
Colton
05.30.23 | nah idk what autobuild is |
Colton
05.30.23 | I'm talking about the one where she shows you a mural in Lookout Landing and says if you follow the gaze of the statues it leads to a temple. that's not connected to the thunderhead stuff? |
nol
05.30.23 | I played like 8 hours yesterday and got to the wind temple. Having more entertainment now. Was dumb and tried going to hateno village first because I want shrine sensor. Game makes way more sense once you head to rito village lol. Pretty sure BOTW had scaling enemy difficulty which this game does not seem to have. |
nol
05.30.23 | I liked how the quest to get to the wind temple was a linear progression through unexplored parts of the map, felt good |
Feather
05.30.23 | ^ I echo this. I have not been to rito village. Just started and got to land, first thing I did was head into the castle where I encountered some shockingly strong guys. Then I went underground in the darkness and again had a hard time knowing what the hell to do. Going to re-orient myself and head for rito I suppose. |
Colton
05.30.23 | "Pretty sure BOTW had scaling enemy difficulty which this game does not seem to have."
nah it does, it has a full leveling system like any other RPG, it just doesn't show it to the player. I'm starting to get a lot of white enemies now |
Colton
05.30.23 | rito stuff was fun, tulin is kind of a little bitch though |
nol
05.30.23 | certified bitch no doubt |
nol
05.30.23 | I need a great fairy defense boost in my life |
nol
05.30.23 | It has scaling I suppose but in a weird “don’t go here yet you’ll get fucked” sorta way. |
Colton
05.30.23 | one really cool thing about this game though is even if you go up against enemies that wreck your shit you can still beat them with the right gameplan and items for fuse fuckery |
Colton
05.30.23 | and also just getting good at parries and flurry rushes |
Colton
05.30.23 | I think a good open world game should encourage exploration and not just make certain areas of the map impossible to survive in, while also making those areas challenging so that when you level up or unlock new stuff it feels rewarding |
nol
05.30.23 | yeah for sure it’s no elden ring. Still a good idea to make a point of grinding out hearts right off the bat tho |
loveisamixtape
05.30.23 | most things seem to one shot u no matter what so i am very stamina wheel biased… i think i need two more vessels to have it max’d out |
Colton
05.30.23 | it is kinda wack how if you don’t head northwest like the game directs you to you miss out on the hieroglpyhs, hestu and great fairy fountain upgrades |
Colton
05.30.23 | @love yeah I maxed out my stamina and now I leap up every cliff like an absolute gigachad |
PotsyTater
05.30.23 | @colton no that’s not connected. The thunderhead quest is related to the Sage quests. But you should definitely still do that Josha quest asap. Just go into the chasm from the first hole in hyrule field and follow the direction the statues point. They will eventually lead you to an ancient mine where things will happen and you will get an important thing
“ liked how the quest to get to the wind temple was a linear progression through unexplored parts of the map, felt good”
This is why most of the temple commutes are better than the temple themselves. Very satisfying journeys. |
PotsyTater
05.30.23 | “ has scaling I suppose but in a weird “don’t go here yet you’ll get fucked” sorta way.”
Not really. Literally just be smarter and better. You don’t need hearts or armour if you are smart. |
PotsyTater
05.30.23 | Stamina is definitely way more important in early game than hearts |
Colton
05.30.23 | yeah you can run away from almost every enemy |
loveisamixtape
05.30.23 | the flux constructor 3 in the thunderhead isles made me wanna kms i seemingly couldn’t run away and i couldn’t see him. i also coincidentally had like no good melee weapons and thought that the railway on the second level of that island was where i was supposed to go and that i was supposed to craft a vehicle with the fans n wood. and i would try and do that before it found me and it did every time 🙏🏻 and then i figured it out! |
loveisamixtape
05.30.23 | also i mostly agree about the temple commutes except for maybe water temple. not being able to find the king’s stupid ass was so upsetting. i don’t blame the game |
Colton
05.30.23 | yeah you don't have to fight the flux construct there I just ignored him |
PotsyTater
05.30.23 | I isusallf smack every white enemy I see with those flowers that make them fight their homies and just watch for a bit |
loveisamixtape
05.30.23 | when u say white enemy what do you mean 🧐 i haven’t googled anything about this game so far i’m tryin to wing it. this is as close as i’ve gotten |
Colton
05.30.23 | you got red enemies, then blue then black and then eventually you start getting white ones when you get to a certain level |
loveisamixtape
05.30.23 | interesting. i haven’t picked up on that at all fr. i only have the electric temple left as far as that goes and like 48 shrines i think so idk what kinda enemies i’m seein |
PotsyTater
05.30.23 | Has anyone tried to fight one of the three head dragons yet |
Feather
05.30.23 | @love I love how new you are to the game, but also how much you have flown through it. I am going to head northwest once I start playing again. Thank yall for the advice. I have wondered aimlessly in difficult areas for far too long. |
GreyShadow
05.30.23 | im too afraid of spoilies to read what i've missed. haven't been playing as much recently but got to Hateno the other night and this game is so funny lmao |
heyadam
05.30.23 | @pots I just look at the electric one ominously from afar. I haven't gotten into a great rhythm with combat yet to really feel up to the bs that I'm sure will ensue |
PotsyTater
05.30.23 | I accidently fell into the arena with one when I just started and had like 3 hearts lol. Hid behind a pillar and observed it’s attacks for a minute and then noped out |
loveisamixtape
05.30.23 | @feather lol well i’m like 60 hours in i’m just a professional Wanderer. finding [redacted]’s limbs thing rn |
PotsyTater
05.30.23 | Shhhh don’t say that name that’s literally the biggest spoiler in this entire thread |
loveisamixtape
05.30.23 | who feather ? |
PotsyTater
05.30.23 | Lol yeah |
PotsyTater
05.31.23 | Holy fuck the story in this one is so much better than botw, literally shitting and puking rn
There is one particular hieroglyph memory that has a huuuuuuge and absolutely fucking monumentally epic reveal |
Colton
05.31.23 | you talking about the one on the spirally akkala island after you get all the other ones? |
PotsyTater
05.31.23 | Haven’t got that far but I’m talkin bout the one where it insinuates what Zelda’s plan is to get back to the future
It really makes the retrieval of the master sword hit different |
PotsyTater
05.31.23 | Just watched the one you are talking about and yeah that’s exactly the plot point I was referring to. Fucking tragic! I love it. |
heyadam
06.01.23 | the fuck is Sage’s Will?! Now I need to find three more lol |
PotsyTater
06.01.23 | Offer four to the statues to upgrade a Sage companion of your choice |
heyadam
06.01.23 | Is there enough to upgrade all four? |
PotsyTater
06.01.23 | I think there are enough to upgrade each of them and then some. I
Think you can upgrade them multiple times |
heyadam
06.02.23 | the Tarrey Town theme is delightful |
heyadam
06.02.23 | just made a president Hudson sword lmfao |
heyadam
06.02.23 | also the mystic robe set looks dope af |
PotsyTater
06.02.23 | Lmao amazing I didn’t even think of that |
heyadam
06.02.23 | It becomes a giant fan with his dumb face on it and it’s awesome |
PotsyTater
06.02.23 | I love him |
heyadam
06.02.23 | it’s legit such a wholesome storyline lol |
PotsyTater
06.02.23 | dude. go get the master sword and then do the hieroglyphs quest. bring kleenex. |
heyadam
06.02.23 | I’m gonna finish the water temple today and then head in that direction. I honestly love all the cut scenes so far, they’re really good. I’ve only down like three of the memories tho |
PotsyTater
06.02.23 | Don’t do any more memories until you get the master sword |
Colton
06.02.23 | I did em all and don't have the master sword yet |
Colton
06.02.23 | have you guys discovered that cool surprise in tarrey town yet |
Colton
06.02.23 | also god damn the gerudo are down bad in these games |
heyadam
06.02.23 | Terry town itself was the coolest surprise haha, not sure if I did yet? just bought some land and stuff and can hopefully start storing some weapons soon |
Feather
06.02.23 | Just got to the water temple (first temple experience), so far really digging the game. The map is insanely large, the new mechanics are still intuitive and the subtle changes are all helpful so far. |
PotsyTater
06.02.23 | @colton not saying it’s a prerequisite or anything. But the way you get the master sword has a certain something to do with a certain major plot point and I found that obtaining it and THEN learning the reality of what I had just done after the fact added some extra emotional gravity to the revelation. You look back on the master sword quest and think “oh fuck…” |
heyadam
06.02.23 | I could only sneak in like an hour and a half here and there until last night and today, so I’m like a TOTK fiend rn lol |
Feather
06.02.23 | I have yet to experiment at all really with weapon creation. Should probably do more of that. I am also refraining from looking anything up so I feel like I’m just stumbling along and randomly finding cool things occassionally. |
heyadam
06.05.23 | why is the goron city shrine absolutely dunking on my brain rn lmao |
PotsyTater
06.05.23 | Can’t remember which one that is |
heyadam
06.05.23 | honestly I'm friend from work and it wasn't actually that hard, but then I goofed and kind of broke the shrine where there was no way to move forward so I had to restart it |
heyadam
06.05.23 | fried from work**
honestly gonna kind of blitz these last two temples and then go for the master sword if possible |
heyadam
06.05.23 | dude pots I just did the hidden shrine you were talking about in the south and that was extremely based. so dope! I'm at the part where you have to do four more steps, was not ready for that to be a main quest objective |
PotsyTater
06.05.23 | Continue that quest to the end |
heyadam
06.05.23 | one more step left |
heyadam
06.05.23 | the cutscene at the end of that quest line is so lit 👁️ |
PotsyTater
06.05.23 | Now go get the master sword and then do the hieroglyphs 😬 |
heyadam
06.05.23 | is the sword heart locked again? If so I may need to do some more shrines. I think I have like 12 hearts or something like that |
heyadam
06.05.23 | starting to see where The Big Feels ™️ are going to come in to play |
PotsyTater
06.05.23 | Don’t believe so |
PotsyTater
06.05.23 | You just need two full stamina wheels |
heyadam
06.05.23 | lit, I have that already - def gonna start that quest tonight |
heyadam
06.05.23 | damn I just found out that we can actually unlock hero’s path already! that helps with exploration so much |
heyadam
06.06.23 | I do not have the patience for the Korok forest shenanigans lol |
PotsyTater
06.06.23 | You have to go in from below |
heyadam
06.06.23 | Yeah it took me like 30 mins to figure that out haha. Took care of the issue there and am headed to the desert now. |
PotsyTater
06.07.23 | I have one shrine left Lul |
Colton
06.07.23 | been taking a break for a few days cause everything is better in moderation, gonna go hard tmo after work though |
heyadam
06.07.23 | haha same-ish, I have periods where I can play this a few hours a night for a couple of days but then there’s always like a whole week where I can’t touch it |
heyadam
06.07.23 | damn pots looks like it’s Honkai star rail time |
PotsyTater
06.07.23 | I’ll probably 100% this game before moving on (excluding koroks) so not quite |
PotsyTater
06.07.23 | The prize you get for doing all the shrines is pretty hilarious |
heyadam
06.07.23 | got the master sword finally last night : ') the sequence of pulling it from its place was gorgeous |
PotsyTater
06.07.23 | Ok now do the hieroglyphs and keep tissues handy. You’ll know when you know. |
PotsyTater
06.08.23 | Today I learned if you roll into gerudo town in your underwear they will throw you in jail |
heyadam
06.08.23 | lmfaoooo well you know I gotta do that before the hieroglyphs now |
PotsyTater
06.10.23 | Just got the fierce diety sword. I don’t like claymores so I just fused it to my master sword lmao |
heyadam
06.15.23 | Queen Gibdo is annoying as shit lol |
PotsyTater
06.15.23 | Yes, yes she is. Definitely the hardest temple boss |
heyadam
06.16.23 | I think it was just the fact that Riju gets knocked over if Gibdo looks in her direction lol. There are so many times I was just waiting for the lightning ability to recharge |
PotsyTater
06.16.23 | Oh yeah, the worst thing about that is how you have to hit her twice to stun her, and after the first hit she starts whipping up tornados at you. So many times I would run clear of the tornados and be lining up a shot just to have Riju get fuckin 86'd because she was too slow/stupid to get out of the way herself. |
Colton
06.23.23 | finally getting back into this after a long break, beat the fire temple yesterday. it was intimidating when I first got there but actually not too bad. music was sick |
Colton
06.23.23 | not gonna look at this thread cause spoilers i’m assuming you guys have beaten it by now though right? |
PotsyTater
06.23.23 | I have not, I’m pretty much exhausting everything before I do the final bit |
nol
06.24.23 | Need to get back into this but I’m on a major fighting game grind |
Colton
06.24.23 | play me in sf6 |
Colton
06.24.23 | I've done 3 of the temples from the regional phenomena and also the one you find after the thunderhead island, is there a lot left still? |
PotsyTater
06.24.23 | Not really. Iirc you’ve done all the memories so as far as main questing goes there’s just one more temple and then some depths related stuff and a couple trips to hyrule castle which you’ve obviously done at least one of unless you’ve been playing the game without a paraglider lmao |
PotsyTater
06.24.23 | That being said I don’t know how much takes places once you are tasked with finding ganon because that’s where I’m at and I’m just assuming that I pretty much just have one final commute and boss fight ahead of me |
Colton
06.24.23 | I did the memories but I didn’t get the master sword yet |
PotsyTater
06.24.23 | Oooh ok, master sword quest is not super long but is very fun and will have you visiting the depths, surface, and sky |
nol
06.25.23 | @colton: fr?? if you are I’m down to play |
Colton
06.25.23 | i haven’t bought it yet but i played it for a couple hours at my buddy’s place and I liked it and will most likely buy it once I finish zelda in like 2 or 3 weeks probably |
nol
06.25.23 | that’s dope dude it’s a really fun game it just takes some practice. I bet you’ll pick it up faster than me |
heyadam
06.26.23 | I’m juggling FF16 and TOTK at the moment lol |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | I said fuck it and spanked ganon-dad last night. Good game. |
Feather
06.27.23 | I completed roughly 50 shrines and ran the bird people, fish people and rock peoples stories right up until the temples, then this past weekend I did all 3 temples in a row.
I gotta say, these temples felt FAR superior to the great beasts or whatever they had going on in the last one. Boss battles so far were so, so. I found them all pretty easy, but I also had like 12 hearts going into them so I didnt have much to sweat over. |
Feather
06.27.23 | @heyadam I have only played FF7 and loved it. I love the zelda games. Will I like FF16? This is your only context to go off of. |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | Temples are much better I'm this one, agreed. The fire temple being my favourite across both games. |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Pains me to say it but I disagree that the temples are much better. I felt a bit led on by the promise of “more traditional temples”. For the most part they aren’t so much “more traditional” as the are just over-simplified. The commutes to the wind and water temples were amazing, but the temples themselves I thought were pretty shit, especially the wind one. The layouts were too straight foreword, puzzles were way too easy and there were just like a small handful of common weak enemies per. Fire temple basically had no puzzles at all and was just a “point a to point b” fest with a cart gimmick that got old pretty fast and you could just circumvent by using your powers and zonal tech anyways. That was actually my least fav. Sand temple was the closest to a traditional temple and probably my favourite in that regard but it still was too small, short, and straightforward. As for the bosses, I appreciate the diversity this time around. I liked the blights but they were very homogeneous. However, the blights were also more challenging. Toss up for me because while these bosses were easier, some of them had better gimmicks than some of the blights. For me it’s basically a wash for both the bosses and the temples. I wanted something different than the divine beasts, but not like this. At least the divine beasts made you think a bit. |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Besides that, this is definitely better than botw in ~most~ ways. The sage powers are a big downgrade from botw tho |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | Enjoyed completing the fire temple using the carts as little as possible.
By no means are they like traditional Zelda temples, though. |
Feather
06.27.23 | @potsy good point the journeys to the wind and water temple definitely increased the experience.
As for temple difficulty of puzzles ... I suppose you are right, the divine beasts felt a bit more difficult. But past games temples werent especially difficult in terms of puzzles so I dont view that as a drawback.
I think that the temples could have benefited from earning a power just before or in them that needs to be used a lot to get through the temple (past games did this well)
There also could be more enemies and mini-bosses. There are barely any in the new temples. |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | Past temples were long and I think the best ones, such as the water temple of Ocarina, were maze-like.
The puzzles themselves were either simple sokoban, hit a target, or find key and remember where lock was. Not especially challenging but they were long and thematically interesting.
Think the natural progression of what is in Tears, for me, is more optional routes and chests to find, and a more maze-like structure. |
Feather
06.27.23 | More chests that are optional, small keys, mazes (similar to the totk and botw labyrinths), mini-bosses would definitely be good |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | @feather maybe the puzzles weren’t difficult on paper but the way you had to navigate the temples and find keys and maps and compasses and mini bosses and weapons and go back and forth for solutions once you had the right items made them feel more engaging. Honestly there were lots of really really difficult temples in majoras mask and ocarina of time. I remember as a kid having to buy a manual to get through some shit lol. No hand holding at all.
I love open world Zelda but the non linear experience ruins the temples. I think that the commutes should have led to self contained temples that were akin to giant themed shrines instead, where you can’t climb the walls etc. that’s my ideal open world Zelda experience. Open world with enclosed linear temples. |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Like these games even ruin their own labyrinths with how much freedom you have. What’s the point of having them if you can just climb on top and say fuck it |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Essentially Zelda should take some notes from Elden ring lol |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | I have a few other nitpicks. I mentioned the sage powers which are terribly implemented. But also there needs to be WAYYYYY more shit to do on the sky islands. |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | And the chasm is cool but feels borderline procedurally generated. For a game that already had the entire surface mapped, I would have expected a bit more from the depths and the sky |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Also there are too few new variants of the korok puzzles |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | I'd prefer them to evolve the non-linear design than betray that design by restricting the mechanics.
Tears was an improvement over BoTW in my opinion, and I'd rather they keep moving in that direction. Maybe that's in borrowing some ideas from the past but not lifting that philosophy entirely.
The past dungeons were far too rigid to work for me in the current framework of the game. Really, beyond the N64, the 3D dungeon designs were not uhhh not great. Wind Waker and Twilight in particular were really derivative of their predecessors. |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | This one seems like such a no brainer to me:
Why aren’t there people stranded in the sky from when parts of the surface went up? There should be a series of quests where you have to use zonai tech to get people
Back down to the surface |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | @hellojoe they are already restricted in the shrines and the shrines are the best part of the game so it’s not a betrayal at all |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Nah wind waker and twilight princess had awesome dungeons. And there can be a happy middle that is somewhere between the old dungeons and what we have now. Look at Elden ring. |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | It is an improvement on botw which was already one of my all time fav games but not gonna pretend it’s perfect |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | They aren't that restrictive. You can still solve them in numerous fashions. There are certain things you can/cannot do but really, the quality is just that the puzzles themselves are enjoyable when compared to the almost non-puzzling of the lock and key of the past games.
I wouldn't say it's good to design the whole game that way, though. In the confines of the micro-cosmic shrines, sure but these temples, I want to see more open ended stuff. |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | Wind Waker probably has the worst dungeons in the series. The whole ethos is get dungeon item and, game leads you back to room where you progress, use item, rinse repeat. |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | It was decidedly a simplified version of the N64 titles and removed the whole maze-like aspect. |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | @hellojow you can’t climb the walls so yes they are. That makes them massively more linear. I’m just asking for something like that in temple form. The multiple ways to solve things isn’t something I’m asking to go…
Nah wind waker was a great game and the dark temple disproves what ur saying. And even still, that’s a lot more involved than these temples. |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Enough copium totk is far from perfect and the temples kinda suck |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | I don’t know what part of wanting temples to be massive shrines rather than simplified divine beasts is controversial lmao |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | Never said it was. Just prefer them pushing forward in a new direction rather than doing easier derivatives of the N64 game. Wind Waker's whole design was an easier Ocarina.
I'd prefer they developed the open ended mechanics into more maze-like dungeons. Not Wind Waker. Linear as sin.
|
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | We do agree, just that I don't think it's necessary to remove climbing or devices to achieve that. Get in the maze-like stuff but keep those mechanics in too, I say.
Wind Waker is still Timmy's first Zelda, though. |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Didnt say they should remove devices or climbing altogether, also didn’t say they should make it more like wind waker dungeons, just said that I like wind wakers dungeons
My ideal temple modifications for totk:
Same themes and commutes but the commutes bring you to a temple “door” like a shrine. For example the wind one would still be a giant pirate ship in the sky. Pretty much the only one that would need to change would be the water one because it’s just floating platforms. Inside is basically a giant maze like shrine in the same theme and same mechanics ideas as the existing temples. These follow the same physics as the shrines making it a slightly more linear experience where you have to complete puzzles by whatever means you can to progress but you can’t just fuckin climb out of the area or phase straight to the end and ruin the entire experience just like how shrines prevent you from doing that. Each one has unique items, maps, compasses like old shrines, unique enemies and mini bosses. Perfect mix of both worlds |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | Defo shouldn't make it more like Wind Waker unless we're talking themed because that's where that game rocks. Structurally, weakest of the traditional 3D Zelda games.
The secret sauce for me is the maze-like structures. Isolated, the combat and puzzles of 3D Zelda games are generally quite poor. They work as a whole.
But I like that they have a new direction, and I think they're gradually getting better at it. I'd like them to keep going in that direction but make the dungeons more maze-like. And only 2 of the 4 dungeons in ToTK have a cool theme.
I think we generally have the same idea though u like a bit of sequence breaking and would hope that any inclusions of past games wouldn't mess with that entirely. |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Skyward sword is way weaker than wind waker
And I think all the temples have good themes to carry over to my ideal versions. The pirate ship and trampolines, the anti gravity and waterfall climbing, the rollercoaster cart mining, and just being a whole ass pyramid respectively
Also dlc needs to bring back the leviathans
With the mechanics at hand it’s beyond me why they haven’t taken notes from shadow of the colossus and made lots of truly giant enemies that you have to take down using zonai tech and climbing and flying etc |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | I just feel like there is so much potential and for how much time they spent on it and how many assets they reused I expected a few more surprises |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | Eh, I think Skyward had some better ideas in it than Wind Waker. The sandship, for instance. Better than anything I played in Wind Waker.
Though, I enjoy playing Wind Waker overall. Pacing and aesthetics outweighs Skyward Sword, I think.
Yeah that would be cool to have giant enemies. specially if they did some inside-outside gameplay on a moving dungeon. Lots of potential in the game in general. Personally, just glad they are continuing to explore the physics gameplay.
I feel like they sort of did all they could with the traditional Zelda formula, so it's nice to see change. Maybe that formula could expand in 2D games, which are usually very good. |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | I think a lot of ToTK dev work went into optimization. Easy to look at art assets and say they look the same but the scope of the game is really impressive. Feels like it all shouldn't work but it does. |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Of course I’m glad they are exploring the physics gameplay, I’m not asking for regression, just progression that is more informed by what made the franchise great in the past. I’m asking for more, not less.
Also I think skyward sword is by far the worst console Zelda game by a large margin. Good ideas, terrible execution. |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | Agreed with you there. Though, I do think the dungeons are less the problem and more... everything else. Largely the pacing is just a slog. Skyward Sword just can't help itself from informing you on every obvious detail. Even the whole sky to ground gameplay is just a loading screen. Lame.
Wind Waker may have terribly linear dungeons but it also has fantastic art direction, music, and more charm than most games can imagine.
The new Zelda games, I think are excellent but I do think they have room to improve. So far it has been an uptick in progression, though. Tears is definitely an improvement, I think. |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | I mean Re: “dungeons” skyward sword literally makes you revisit the exact same locations for the second half which is the ultimate cop out imo, only paled by making you fight toe bean monster 3 fuckin times |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | The improvements on botw that totk makes vastly outweigh my gripes I’m just being honest about my findings now that I’ve beaten it because I’ve only expressed how much fun it’s been until now |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | Not really that much of an issue for me. Though Metroid Prime did this sort of structure better. Skyward Sword was still less egregious than Phantom Hourglass. those DS games man... not for me.
With Wind Waker, it is such that the structure of the dungeons is so watered down. The puzzles are even less like puzzles.
One thing that ToTk didn't resolve that is even more egregious an issue for me now is object persistence. For all the engine improvements they made, I really wish objects states would save when you leave an area. Not sure if this is a technical issue or a design choice but yeah... that's my pet peeve. XD |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | A 3D metroidvania is incomparable. Revisiting locations is baked into the design. Handheld games are a different conversation entirely but yes those are worse
When is the last time you played wind waker? |
Colton
06.27.23 | how many shrines did you get before you beat it? |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | All of them |
Colton
06.27.23 | I just did the south lomei labyrinth last night, it was cool but the prize was kind of a let down |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | Revisiting locations is also baked into the design of Skyward Sword. The landscapes change and so on. It just so happens that Skyward Sword is a slog and doesn't let you think on your own for even a second. XD
Wouldn't mind but some of the handheld games represent the best in the series. The DS ones? Not so much.
played Wind Waker HD a couple years ago. Streamlined some of the Gamecube stuff but I prefer the art direction of the original. |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | The joys of being awarded all the shit you already got in the first game |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | @joe but not bro the franchise. I’m saying it’s incompatible to Metroid because that’s always been a part of the design. Not so in Zelda. In skyward sword it feels lazy.
I don’t agree with your wind waker sentiments at all, or at least feel they are greatly exaggerated. Of course they are more streamlined than the Nintendo games but everything since has been, skyward sword certainly is no exception |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | I only wear fierce diety set and sky diving set in this game pretty much unless I have to use elemental shit here and there |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Wind waker temples are so memorable, so many amazing set pieces. Skyward sword I don’t remember jack shit |
Colton
06.27.23 | why do people not like the champion abilities? Tulin and Yunobo are great. love that they can be upgraded too |
Colton
06.27.23 | SS does have great dungeons this is true |
nol
06.27.23 | wind waker is the goat. something ab Medli going from lil harp player to sage makes me tear up |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Also skyward sword art direction is eye cancer |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | @colton it’s not the abilities themselves, it’s the implementation. Having to chase those fucking bozos around trying to use them. Or even worse, accidently using them when you don’t want to… |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | Not sure I see where you're coming from exactly. I'm more of the opinion that the game itself is too slow to accommodate the back tracking. Not like MP doesn't reuse enemies, boss fights, etc. It just doesn't treat you like you're 5.
I'm not necessary alone in the assessment of Wind Waker's dungeons, either. It's a fairly common belief that it is among the worst dungeon designs of the trad Zelda games. It's certainly not as good as Link Between Worlds, which came after. People with more dedication have graphed out all the dungeon designs and it's just that the structures of Wind Waker are just very linear. Wind Waker is a mega charming game but it is also very much simpler than its predecessors. |
Colton
06.27.23 | true it can be annoying tracking them down sometimes but I love going from a puny little 3 heart bitch getting murked by bokoblins to absolutely gang beating the fuck out of any and all enemies, the progression there is pretty satisfying |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Now ur extrapolating separate arguments upon this one. You buy a Metroid game knowing what ur getting into re back tracking. You don’t buy a Zelda game expecting lazy bullshit and an empty ass sky.
Like I said, all of the ones after n64 are simpler. I don’t care if they are more linear if they are fun and pretty which they are. The end castle and boss fight of that game are amazing. Top 5 Zelda game. |
Colton
06.27.23 | haven't played in a while but I think it's probably true that WW is carried a bit by its art style and charm and the actual gameplay doesn't hold up as well when scrutinized. the ocean exploration was not very substantial and the triforce hunt at the end is ass |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | I played it within the last 5 years and the ocean could have had more in it but it still had about 50x more than skyward swords sky |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | I mean, you might but I'm not really buying a Zelda game to endlessly play Ocarina copy-pastes. I don't mind if they do backtracking if the game itself is good. I dont think SS is lazy. It's just not fun for me. Metroid Prime is a good game with back tracking.
Wind Waker probably wouldn't make my top 5. Aesthetically, it probably would be close to number 1 but my interest in going back to it or actually playing it that often? Nah |
nol
06.27.23 | I liked giving the fishy snacks for maps |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | Not as much as I like you. |
nol
06.27.23 | gimme snacks |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | What would you like? |
nol
06.27.23 | I like how the NPCs go like “doohh???” |
nol
06.27.23 | fishy snacks |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | “ I mean, you might but I'm not really buying a Zelda game to endlessly play Ocarina copy-pastes.”
Im not interested in continuing this conversation if you’re just going to keep misrepresenting my arguments like this
Separately I think botw and totk carried over some of the lazy bullshit of skyward sword unfortunately |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | How many region exclusive common enemies are in totk? One? |
nol
06.27.23 | https://youtu.be/1EsJkD14Isw |
nol
06.27.23 | truly the best part about zelda |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | I'm not. I'm just outlining why I don't have a problem with Skyward Sword repeating dungeons. I don't go in with any presuppositions. I didn't think it was lazy, I thought back-tracking was baked into the design. I just didn't think it was fun for other reasons. And shit. Wind Waker and TP weren't exactly the most populated seas and planes either. Sky was worse than the sea, though
@nol on it. Best fishy snacks in the globe. |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Variants don’t count btw |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | The problem with enemy variety in the past Zelda games is that the combat is so bad in Zelda games, you effectively fight most of them with the same method anyway.
Enemy variety is a persistent problem but at least the combat is slightly more versatile? Much work to be done there, but combat has and continues to be very simplistic in Zelda. |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | @ nol agreed hard |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | @hellojoe
https://youtu.be/eM88KYxs4DE
If you say so 😂 |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | I mean comparatively. It ain't no Bayonetta or Souls. They're pretty simple games. But it's the whole that makes it fun. Like Ocarina is the full game. Not just the combat on its own. |
Colton
06.27.23 | only region exclusive common enemy I can think of is gibdos |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Souls games combat being anything beyond rudimentary is also relatively new
Also I hate the combat in bayonetta lol
@colton same
Where my deku bros at |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Also they did poes dirty ngl |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | Not sure what you mean. Feel like the earlier Souls games have better combat than the newer titles. I'd also throw Nioh to the mix.
Bloodborne still my fave.
Bayonetta still has measurable depth with enemies that actually pressure the player. Zelda could never.
|
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Old souls games are literally just “stab butt”
Don’t get me wrong I love stabbing but but come on
Bloodborne onward develops some more complex mechanics
Nioh also has a complex system, much more complex than most souls games besides sekiro
Hate platinum games floaty hack and slash gameplay |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | Oh I was thinking Bloodborne as older lol. Though I thought Sekiro which followed was trivial. The stealth didn't help much. I would say BB is probably top dog for me.
To each their own. They have plenty of depth. Ditto DMC games. Certainly more so than Zelda. Bayonetta 1 in particular has great enemy design, I think. |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | The stealth??? How about the crucial parrying system, prosthetics, all the skill trees, and addition of vertical combat options Lmao. Easily the biggest leap development in mechanics in souls history |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Didn’t say they don’t have depth. Said I don’t find them fun to play. I’d rather have simple satisfying combat than overly complicated jank |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | I’m 31 in a week man my brain isn’t fast enough for any of that shit |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | That’s why I prefer old souls games to sekiro as well |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | They added stuff that trivialised the game, I found. And it's not like Nioh where the aggressive play has you chain attacks together. It just wasn't for me. Felt like they tipped the balance of BB in the wrong direction and made the game trivial. still a very fun game but the balance of BB was more my speed.
I'm the same age as you. I just like these sorts of creative combo games. I like fighting games too. Cut from the same cloth. |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Saying the combat mechanics of sekiro trivialized the game is the most flabbergasting nonsense to come from this thread yet, and I’m saying that as someone who would rank it near dead last out of Fromsofts catalogue. |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Especially from someone who just used Fromsoft games as a point of reference for deep combat mechanics lmao |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | It isn't deep, though. It's fairly Simon Says. More does not mean deeper. Depth, I would define as being the number of meaningful choices you can make. Not every choice. Much of it boils down to fairly trivial fights. Though, I never said they have depth. Bayonetta has depth. Souls is just more engaging than Zelda. |
Feather
06.27.23 | Totally changing the conversation here, but is anyone else barely utilizing the weapon forging stuff in totk? I havnt felt the need to merge materials onto my weapons much at all... |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Haha definitely not…. Most weapons are pretty much useless against any silver enemy or any big enemy without fusing |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | “ It isn't deep, though. It's fairly Simon Says. More does not mean deeper”
Jfc m8 and you think bloodborne is deep for being ds but faster. Your video game takes are wayyyy too hot for me I must respectfully out of this convo before I get a migraine |
Feather
06.27.23 | @potsy I have noticed the silver enemies take quite long to go down without a fused weapon, but generally I have a few fused weapons on me that I have just naturally picked up along the way without having to do it myself.
I am 3 temples deep so I figured at this point I would have needed to fuse more often by now. |
Colton
06.27.23 | feather how far are you in the game? I can’t imagine not using fuse unless you’ve played like 10 hours or less |
Colton
06.27.23 | wtf youre 3 temples deep |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | I never said Bloodborne was deep either. XD just less trivial.
Sekiro is very much a game of parrying. In that way, it actually reminds me of the Batman games. It's still more engaging than the Zelda combat but not as deep as say Bayonetta or Ninja Gaiden.
If you think that's hot, there are critics who don't even consider Sekiro a souls game at all. |
Feather
06.27.23 | @Colton I mean I basically 100%'ed botw, so I am fairly competent but I am by no means a good video-gamer.
I have not gone out of my way to do many mini-boss type battles across hyrule yet so that could be one factor.. the other being I have done 50+ temples so I have plenty of health and stamina to keep up with the enemies that take longer to kill. |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | Yeah Feather, definitely start using the fuse. It'll help you out a lot. :) |
Feather
06.27.23 | ^ I'll experiment a bit and go fight some dragons/ogres and stuff. |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | You can sort your materials by fuse strength, too. Play around a bit and remember to have fun. =D |
Colton
06.27.23 | I just don't understand why you would choose to have much shittier weapons when you always have an abundance of supplies to make much better ones |
Colton
06.27.23 | that's like not using the paraglider for travelling |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | @joe bruh you literally used souls games as a metric for combat depth alongside nioh and bayonetta. If you weren’t talking about bloodborne or sekiro then you’ve pretty much exhausted all the games that aren’t just “dodge” and “poke butt” so you can’t be talking about anything else. Now plz for the love of god stop baiting me into continuing this convo
Anyways ZELDA
Anyone fought the king gleeoks yet? |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Or done the Lynel colosseum? |
Feather
06.27.23 | @Colton lol I honestly just havnt found it necessary yet. Idk what to tell ya. @Joe thanks for the sorting tip, that will definitely be handy. |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | I think you really need to re-read my posts man. Nowhere did I say they had depth. I said Bayonetta had depth. I compared them more favorably to Zelda because I do think they are way more engaging in their combat. I did not specify that was because they had more depth.
Lol I'll stop too because there's no reason for us to just keeping yapping at each other. XD let's agree to disagree, dude. Mad respect on where you're coming from but I just see it different.
Yeah, I fought the ice one. Fun, actually. Though arrows were essential and ehhh I ran out and had to come back. |
Colton
06.27.23 | I think I might be able to take a king gleeok if I get a triple shot bow and a fuckload of keese eyes. then I can get the last piece of the TP armour. I did not know there's a lynel colosseum |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | “ think you really need to re-read my posts man”
That’s how I’ve felt for a large part of this so perhaps we have both been uncharitable. Agreed to agree to disagree.
The king gleeok has one head of each element and is thus much harder than the single element ones. If you let him fly into the sky after half health you are pretty much fucked. If you bring a savage lynel bow and a bunch of Keene eyes and don’t let him fly you can absolutely mop the floor with him tho and it’s really satisfying |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Lynel colosseum is a fucking blast. Bring puff shrooms. |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | Strongly recommend everyone try fighting king gleeok fairly once (no keese eyes) just for the thrill of getting absolutely fucking rocked when he goes into the sky and rains hell down upon you as you desperately try to get the altitude to be able to bring him back down |
Colton
06.27.23 | another strat is to equip barbarian armour when he goes down, eat mighty bananas and then use a weapon with water warrior and get sidon to make you wet so you can dish out crazy damage |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | Lol yeah man. Shit happens. It be one of those days.
The flight on the ice one is manageable... if you have arrows. He shoots ice blocks down and you can reverse state to ride up into the sky. But it's hard to hit him without arrows. |
Colton
06.27.23 | i have a full row of hearts now and normal gleeoks aren't a huge challenge anymore |
HelloJoe
06.27.23 | That's because you're a beast, Colton.
I like to wear the nostalgia armor sets. Not out of practicality or anything. They just look cool. Especially with Link's corrupted hand. |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | @joe yeah with the single element ones you can make yourself near immune to all of their attacks with their respective elemental armour sets and their air barrages are much easier to avoid and gain the altitude needed to snipe them back down. But the king gleeok you can only majorly protect yourself from one of three elements or partially from all three and the air barrage is literally a hail storm of all three elements that is so dense that it is impossible to gain the altitude to hit him without sponging up numerous attacks and having to regain height. It’s entirely unfair lol.
But with keese eyes you can ground him, run back far enough that his wind doesn’t reach you before he recovers and peg all three of his faces again over and over before he is ever able to gain much height |
PotsyTater
06.27.23 | I thought my fav nostalgia armour set was gonna be twilight princess but honestly I think skyward sword one looks best in this engine |
Colton
06.27.23 | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tww18Kdb14k |
