Wyoming Sessions

Not everything from this project was a knockout success, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a blast listening to these. After hearing the final album, I compiled a list of my favourite tracks to jam on one concise mixtape. Let me know your thoughts. What were your favourite tracks? What would a mixtape by you look like?

4/5 - My personal favourite of the 5. I'll concede Nas' flow is a little awkward, and yeah, the lyrics are occasionally cringe, but god damn the production on this thing is great, and I like Nas' antics in honesty. "Simple Things" and "Bonjour" will both feature in my soty list.

4/5 - Almost as great as NASIR, but held back by a couple tracks ("Come Back Baby", "What Would Meek Do?), overall this is fire though. Pusha T's enthusiasm and energy is infectious, and he goes harder than anyone else on this project.

3.5/5 - For many, this is probably the best of the 5. I get it, and I really enjoy it too, but feel like "Fire" and a couple others hold it back. There's also this tendency to overplay hooks ("Reborn"), and it's occasionally really cheesy ("Cudi Montage"). Still, this one has the most variety to offer, and lots of memorable hooks and beats.

3/5 - I actually had high hopes for this one after the first 3 tracks. "Gonna Love me" and "Issues/Hold On" are both extremely slick, sexy and soulful tunes. The guitar melodies in particular are absolutely sublime, and the samples tie in beautifully. Unfortunately, it all starts to blend together after that, sounding like homogeneous, commonplace R&B jams. None of it is as bad, but nothing's as stellar as the opening trio.

3/5 - For the first time ever we have a Kanye album that doesn't feel huge. Love him or hate him, his albums usually contain several career-defining highs, but for the first time, I'm having a hard time picking a song that stands up to the best in his catalog. Maybe Kanye's been spoiling us too much. Still, in saying all of that, "No Mistakes" is one of my most played tracks this year. It's immediately nostalgic, sounding like a cut that wouldn't be too out of place on College Dropout or Graduation.
