HAWKZ' BM GUIDE PT. 1: BEGINNERS

M//////
1Agalloch
The Mantle

If I was recommending an album to get into the genre, this would be it. A glorious blend of acoustic folk and the most natural atmospheric bm you will ever hear.
2Ulver
Bergtatt - Et eeventyr i 5 capitler

See above description and apply it to this also. Bm doesn't get more beautiful than this.
3Mayhem
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas

When it comes to straight up evil bm, this is the album to go for.
4Emperor
In the Nightside Eclipse

Glorious and lo-fi symphonic bm from the masters!
5Cradle of Filth
Dusk... and Her Embrace

More vampyric and gothic but on the same level as Nightside for symphonic bm.
6Dimmu Borgir
Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia

An absolute black metal opera. People may say go for Enthrone or Stormblast but this one is their magnum opus.
7Burzum
Det Som Engang Var

Varg was the master of writing the most hypnotic riffs imaginable.
8Immortal
Sons of Northern Darkness

Immortal's best and most epic classic. FAR BEYOND THE NORTH WAVES!
9Satyricon
Dark Medieval Times

The first medieval bm album? The atmosphere on this one is out of this world.
10Borknagar
The Olden Domain

Lo-fi, folky and almost even psychedelic sounding at times. Borky's whole discog is essential minus the new album.
11Gorgoroth
Pentagram

Say what you will but this band's first 3 albums are top tier bm and the vox are batshit insane.
12Dissection
Storm of the Light's Bane

Such a bleakly gorgeous album with the best melodies you will ever hear.
13Vinterland
Welcome My Last Chapter

An album that doesn't get mentioned among the greats nearly enough. Melodic bm masterpiece.
14Summoning
Minas Morgul

Epic symphonic and ambient influenced bm that makes you wanna befriend Frodo Baggins.
15Panopticon
Panopticon

Before Austin added in other elements he graced us with this all out bm assault.
16Equilibrium
Sagas

Before they went all pop and ruined their legacy. Doesn't take away from this being an absolute classic of folky and cheesy symphonic bm!
17Warmoon Lord
Burning Banners of the Funereal War

One of my fav modern bm albums. Melodic and icy but accessible enough for newcomers!
18Fen
Carrion Skies

An epic and hazy post-rock inspired folk bm album. A bit long but never boring.
19Alcest
Γ‰cailles De Lune

NEIGE HAS THE VOICE OF AN ANGEL!!!
20Deafheaven
Sunbather

May be hipster bm but Sunbather is essential listening.
21An Autumn For Crippled Children
Try Not To Destroy Everything You Love

This band loves adding post-punk influences into their brand of bm and while this isn't my fav AAFCC, its probably the best starting point.
22Old Man's Child
The Pagan Prosperity

Some of the most brutal melodic bm ever. Galder is a master riff writer and his vox are some of the best in bm.
23Carach Angren
Death Came Through a Phantom Ship

Theatric and over the top but also drenched in a dreadful carnival type atmosphere. These guys have gotten stale but this album is a classic.
24Taake
Hordalands Doedskvad

One of the filthiest sounding bm bands ever and this is their best effort. So many amazing riffs.
25Carpathian Forest
Defending the Throne of Evil

This band never gets enough love. They went more symphonic on this album to mix with their punky bm brand and it resulted in this being their best by far.
