| Top 11 Frightened Rabbit Songs
Frightened Rabbit is one of the bands that helped me through quite a difficult time, specifically over last year. Despite the fact that I attended an evangelical Christian college, the lyrics of the late Scott Hutchinson struck a chord with me, specifically regarding his poetic, and at times blunt, descriptions of the grim reality of living with mental illness. Undoubtedly, his lyricism has struck a chord with many, many others as well. Currently, I have listened to four of the albums of Frightened Rabbit, from The Midnight Organ Fight to Painting of a Panic Attack. Beginning with simple piano keys, the soundscape of this piece is quite beautiful and provides an excellent backdrop in order for the lyrics to be illuminated. | | 10 | | Frightened Rabbit

"An Otherwise Disappointing Life"
It was during my darkest moments of last year that I had my headphones on, and I was listening to this particular song. Perhaps put more bluntly than in other Frightened Rabbit songs, the chorus begins with the line "in an otherwise disappointing life," which at times I could not help but agree. | | 9 |  | Frightened Rabbit

As one who has, and continues to struggle with mental illness, though likely not to the extent of Scott Hutchinson and numerous others, the lines "And though I dreamt with a rapid eye/by day I hope to rapidly die/and have my organs laid on ice" stood out. | | 7 | | Frightened Rabbit

"Swim Until You Can't See Land"
A song that, at first blush, appears to be relatively optimistic, is an example of the brilliance of the music of Frightened Rabbit: the more time spent with Scott Hutchinson's lyricism and a greater understanding of his life, the more the tension with trying to remain optimistic in the midst of a grim reality becomes apparent; this song simply bleeds of this understanding. | | 6 | | Frightened Rabbit

I remember, last year, sitting in a small room crying to this song. It may be quite simple musically speaking, but, at the time struck a chord with me; lyrically, the feeling of being truly unknown "I'm not miserable now/No one knows" is a petrifying fear. | | 5 |  | Frightened Rabbit

I must admit, I first fell in love with this song whilst a sophomore in college, and it is not the best to listen to as a student at a Christian college! Nonetheless, I believe it is the musical aspect of this piece, the continual layering of sound, as I noticed one Youtube user commented, that ultimately draws me in. | | 4 | | Frightened Rabbit

"Keep Yourself Warm"
What I find most powerful about this song is the last minute or so of music; after Scott Hutchinson yells the final line, I just imagine the pent up energy of fear and desperation exploding over and saturating the musicianship of Scott Hutchinson, providing a moving finish to an already incredible song. | | 3 | | Frightened Rabbit

"Good Arms Vs. Bad Arms"
Whilst this is perhaps my favorite Frightened Rabbit Song at the moment, I am creating this list on the assumption that each song had on me since I discovered the band. Nevertheless, from a musical standpoint, this song is a masterpiece. I have dreamt before of going to Scotland (and I still hope to!), and this song provides me with the opportunity to imagine the beauty of this country. | | 2 | | Frightened Rabbit

Undoubtedly one of the most powerful and influential songs that I heard last year when I was having my own struggle with mental illness. The blunt, but powerful, lines "I think I'll save suicide for another day/year" allowed me to channel the ugly, distorted picture of reality that I was facing into a sublime and sobering song of comfort. | | 1 | | Frightened Rabbit

I remember, as a sophomore in college, lying in bed on a Saturday morning listening to this song a countless number of times. The opening track to The Midnight Organ Fight, it perfectly encapsulates the desperate struggle to find joy while at the same time struggling with the debilitating effects of mental illness. With an upbeat melody placed behind such morbid lyrics as "I am ill/But I'm not dead/And I don't which of those I'd prefer," Scott Hutchinson once again demonstrates his ability to display his struggles in such a way that can easily go unnoticed behind the music, but if truly understood, is nothing short of overwhelming. While "Floating in the Forth" may have been more akin to my struggles at the time, I do believe that this is, without a doubt, one of the finest pieces of music ever to be recorded. | |
