cylinder's top 50 GRIND/PV

loosely ranked. grind and powerviolence. no emoviolence, cuz i see that as more aligned with skramz, which i could make a whole list for as well. i tried to keep it as pure as possible. some of these dip into metalcore a little bit, but as long as they were grindy enough, i allowed them. recs are welcome, especially cybergrind and powerviolence

REC #5
Loved this! Ear-splitting lo-fi production, super short songs, and hardcore-styled, caustically pissed off vocals sure are a winning formula for pv. Just wish there were a few more tracks of this goodness, this thing is so short it feels a bit like a tease!

REC #4
Solid thrashy deathgrind. The music reminds me of a more intense version of 90s Napalm Death, when they started getting a bit more death-metally, and the vocals remind me of Discordance Axis with the back-and-forth from deep gutturals to screeching, cat-like shrieks. I'm glad the shrieks are there, because if it was only gutturals on top of these super-thick-and-chunky tones + super dense production, that would surely be too much "low." The grind parts on here are definitely intense, but the band leans a bit too much on the slower, more regular-sounding death/thrash metal-type riffs for my taste. They make a lot of the songs seem to drag on for me. More interesting tones would've been appreciated too. One thing I thought was really cool though was how the last track just keeps blasting and blasting until it abruptly cuts out. That was a nice, creative touch I think the album could use a little more of. Definitely solid, just not my bag exactly

REC #3
Damn, this shit is FEROCIOUS. The shrieky vocals, tremolo riffs, and hyperfast blasts give it a bit of a blackened tinge, which I love (I love black metal and blackened hardcore as well). A bit more variety in the songwriting would've been appreciated, and it's maybe a bit monochrome overall, but since it's so short, those aren't too big of issues. It's still a beast of a grind album- I could def see putting this on next time I feel like punching a wall.

REC #2
This was awesome! This is a 62-track comp with a few unreleased songs and bunch of others taken from various splits and other comps. And I really enjoyed every single track. I love the combination of male and female vocals- first time I've heard that in pv I think. And I appreciated how while the guy screams, the girl does more of a lighter shout, and the two voices mix very well, as opposed to the possible overkill of two vocalists both doing throat-shredding screams. Also love the blown-out bass- it adds a nice, crunchy underlayer to it all. Great dynamics within the songs too- despite there being 62 of 'em, they're all pretty distinct. And the slow parts are fuckin sick. My beef is the mixing on the vocals; sometimes they sit a bit flatly/awkwardly on top of everything else. That's easy to overlook though when the music is this potent.

REC #1
Enjoyed this a lot! Most, if not all of the pv I've heard so far is deadly serious, so some pv with a sense of humor was refreshing. Super cool that all three members contribute vocals- gives the music a really rowdy, communal, all-over-the-place feel that works super well with this type of music. Wasn't sure about the lowest-voiced guy's vocals at first, but they grew on me over the course of the album, as I think they add to the silliness/humor of it all. The samples are hilarious too. The production leaves a biiit to be desired, but I guess the amateurishness of it is part of its charm. Great stuff!
