Top 5 Releases: Feb 2021

The Plat is back, and only a little bit late this time (needed to catch up on everything I thought would be worth listening to). February was a bit more interesting than January, so let me know what you think! And tell me if I missed anything worth checking out.

Earth Is A Black Hole

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

Teenage Wrist - Earth Is A Black Hole
Of Mice and Men - Timeless E.P.
Normandie - Dark and Beautiful Secrets
Anneke Van Giersbergen - The Darkest Nights Are the Brightest
5Hayley Williams
FLOWERS for VASES / descansos

It may not be perfect, but the Paramore front-woman's venture into soft, underspoken folk music was an enjoyable one. While I wish some of the songs had been a little more complex or interesting, Williams is a good enough vocalist to enjoy despite her flaws.

Top Songs: Asystole, Over Those Hills, Just a Lover
4for your health
In Spite Of

This band is officially on my radar for the future. My only main complaint with this album is that it isn't longer, but god damn what a blast of raw energy it is (just look past some of those...interesting song titles).

Top Songs: Birthday Candles in the Effigy, You're So United Ninety-Three We're So Flight One Eighty
3Nick Cave and Warren Ellis
Carnage

This is the soundtrack to the most intense film of 2021 that hasn't been made. Nick Cave can do no wrong with his moody and atmospheric vocal delivery and songwriting, and this album proves that. Warren Ellis remains an outstanding instrumentalist/composer as well.

Best Songs: Carnage, White Elephant, Shattered Ground
2Psychedelic Porn Crumpets
Shyga! The Sunlight Mound

Much like #4, this album is a blast of pure energy. PPC is one of the best garage rock bands out there, and some of these new songs are begging to be performed live.

Best Songs: Tripolasaur, The Terrors, Mundungus
1King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard
L. W.

KGLW is so f***king weird, but they consistently make it work. By taking everything from their stellar K.G. release and doubling down on it, they've released a record that's every bit as enjoyable and full of surprises. I truly can't wait to see what else this band will come up with in their wacky career.

Best Songs: O.N.E., Static Electricity, See Me
