Persefone Discography Ranked

In preparation for the upcoming Persefone album, Aathma, I've decided to compile my personal organization of their albums from least favorite to most. These guys have one of the most underrated and consistent discographies out there that no doubt deserves the critical praise it receives. Despite the ordering of this list, every release from this band is certainly worth a listen in my opinion. Let's get right to it.
4Persefone
Spiritual Migration

The most technical-leaning of the four Persefone albums comes in as my personal least favorite. When it comes down to it, Spiritual Migration still has that trademark Persefone sound and song structuring, but it sacrifices ingenuity and instrumental parts for less-inspired tracks and more atmospheric tendencies. The new approach leads to some great moments and creates an album that is certainly a superb work in its own right, but below the standard the band had previously set.
3Persefone
Shin-Ken

Although there have been more than a few complaints lobbied at the production, I'd argue that it adds its own dimension to this particular release. This is Persefone's most visceral album, where every guitar part sounds like a violent stab. Featuring some of the group's faster tracks, Shin-Ken takes the listener for a wild ride from the get-go. The concept of Japanese folklore is also a welcome venture. Regardless of my compliments, the production does indeed hold this back from truly being better than it is.
2Persefone
Truth Inside the Shades

Poor Truth Inside the Shades. It's been eternally lost in Persefone's discography, massively overlooked in favor or its successor, Core. The wide acclaim given to the aforementioned effort left the band's debut stuck in a shadow that it just couldn't overcome. It's a shame, because this is definitely Persefone's second-best album. Although more stripped-down in terms of production, the atmosphere and songwriting present here rival the rest of the discography. There is so much passion and creativity here that are hard to ignore. The album also stands as Persefone's shortest album, making it a very easy to get into and serves as a great entry-point into the discography.
1Persefone
Core

It's no surprise that Core stands tall above Persefone's fellow albums. Not only is it the definitive best within the band's sonic portfolio, but it also is one of the best modern death metal albums out there. Three tracks clocking in at over 20 minutes dominate this release, making it rather intimidating to a first listener. But make no mistake--once this album starts, you'll be taken away by the amazing instrumental and vocal work, guiding you through the compelling story of Persephone herself. The wonderful Greek mythology is only the icing on the cake; for such a long album, you will never find yourself uninterested. These guys know when to hit you hard with riffs, bring in the keys, or scale back and let you soak in the mood. It's a peak for the band and a masterpiece in the genre.
